I think this ending is very beautiful. Death always wins in the end, so he knew he was going to win anyway. He knew Elisabeth would come to him at one time. Uwe plays a very 'serious' Death; that's his interpration of the character. Mate for example plays a more passionate Death. Elisabeth is 'happy' she is finally free from her life and Death is kind of surprise that she's that happy, but he KNEW he would win (3:17). And if you die, you 'get a kiss from the Death', so that's why ;)
Danke!
I like it better when he carries her off the stage, too! And there is a version of this song with Pia and Uwe doing this, but that was later and not in 1992!
Even if it isn't as dramatic as other stagings, it fits with the show's message. Elisabeth spends the whole musical trying to prove that she belongs to herself but if Death carried her offstage that would indicate that he possesses her at the end. In a musical titled "Elisabeth", I would rather see Elisabeth get her way at the end. :)
Maybe, or maybe he was attracted to the way she does not want to be with him and prefers life ("Nein, ich möchte leben, ich bin zu jung um auf zu geben"): people most of the time want things they can't get, so does Death. He WANTS her to be him, because he can't stand that she is that stubborn and proud. Of course he knew that he would win (everybody has to die), but he was impatient. I think that's why Death loved Elisabeth: because she was too stubborn to die when he wanted her to.
I really like the 1996 ending as well except, I would rather they end the duet/musical with the kiss. It seems like a more elegant ending that way. (Same thing with Rudolf's death. I prefer the versions where der Tod kisses him as the gun is fired rather than before.)
I NEVER liked the Vienna staging of the finale. So, he waited for her for so many years and when Elisabeth finally comes to him, Death plants a wet one on her and then tosses her off on the floor? Can someone say "awkward?"
I was wondering why in the beginning he uses past tense for "I loved her" and then "rise together from the fire" and "she belongs to me". So after the kiss it begged the question does he still love her? Are they together? Or was it just her living soul that he loved? Because that's sad.😢 I have hoped he could be with her afterward somehow.😔
That's exatly how I felt when I first saw it, but I discussed it with Havanah (youtube Elisabeth subber) and my mom, and they both disagreed. They both thought that he wanted to be with her longer, but was not allowed to because that's how he "works," but he was really impatient this whole time and lived out his whole existent just for that one moment, and htat it was tragic for him. That being said, and although I agree with them, I still prefer the Essen, Hungarian and Japanese endings
Although the way Death's leg gets caught in her dress and he shakes it off is awkward, because it looks like he's kinda dismissing her as just another dead body . . . But I think that was a mistake :D
@HouseOnSunset This is not akward. She received the kiss of death and dies. He puts her on the ground dead. That's all ;-) He doesn't resent her or so ...
I love both dutch and german version, but I don't like the way she dies, in the dutch version they like give each other a huge kiss, and Death carries her off stage, but here he just lies her on the ground is acting like: 'Whatever.'
@HouseOnSunset I think it's supposed to be him leaving her for his shades to carry her into the underworld? I scratched my head for a while there to... I do prefer the later re-blocking with him carrying her off.
But I have a question: I understad why Elisabeth loved Death, but why exactly does Death love her? What is he attracted to? My only answer is that she was considered the most beautiful woman at that time. Was it just superficial?
I thought that it was because she was attracted to him and confessed it in Schwarzer Prinz. Death is used to people dreading him but here's Princess Elisabeth wishing he'll stick by her and telling him he fascinates her. In turn, she fascinates him. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

German is a beautiful language :)
I can totally see how Pia and Uwe grew into their talents. The Essen performance is a bit better than this, but this is one of the first!

Marie V Same as you...
@@raveny3954 So true and frustrating. Oh well I like to think in the afterlife realm of the play he does. 🤛
Wircklich eine super qulität
hätte ich auch gern
Danke fürs einstellen

Hammer geil
Yep, the Hungarian ending is sort of a marriage of the Wien and Stage Entertainment endings.
So Google isn't translating the German comments anymore?
Although the way Death's leg gets caught in her dress and he shakes it off is awkward, because it looks like he's kinda dismissing her as just another dead body . . . But I think that was a mistake :D
That's quite a head of hair.

Yes, it's Lucheni, with the noose around his neck.
@HouseOnSunset This is not akward. She received the kiss of death and dies. He puts her on the ground dead. That's all ;-)

You mean the 2001 Essen production?
Der Tot is kind of creepy in this version. I am used to seeing Mate Kamaras, who is still creepy death but less creepy than here

@obessedbookwormA2Z Der Tod, sorry typo there in previous comment :)

Why is the clapping so hesitant and awkward? Lol...
+Emily2351 Because there was no full audience, this is a rehearsal.
Yes! I think its better carrying her off the stage than just putting her on the floor xD
0.24 BANANE!!
