- I collect the star Stand Tall on the Four Pillars in Shifting Sand Land using 0 A presses.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star in 1 A press. You can find that video here: • SM64 - Stand Tall on t... . At that time, I knew that if Mario could somehow get on top of the wire mesh, then this star could be done in 0x A presses. I also knew that, using the goomba, Mario could get very close to getting onto the mesh, but he couldn't quite make it. It wasn't until Tyler Kehne popularized the star dance clip that a breakthrough was made. Interestingly, after Tyler informed me of the star dance clip, Tyler and I both independently realized that this star could be done in 0x A presses!
So what is the star dance clip? The star dance clip is a technique where Mario collects a star, thereby allowing him to get onto ledges he wouldn't normally be able to get on. You see, when Mario collects a star, he enters a state where he is able to grab onto ledges. But when he grabs on in this state, instead of entering the grabbing on animation, he just appears at the top of the ledge and does his star dance. So the reason that this is useful is because after we use the goomba's knockback to gain height, we are high enough to grab onto the mesh, but not in a state where Mario is allowed to. It is only by collecting the 100 coin star that Mario becomes able to grab onto the ledge and gets up successfully.
The goomba bounce was actually very precise, done in such a way as to maximize Mario's height. You see, the peak height of a goomba bounce is directly related to the height of the goomba, and so before bouncing on him we raise him up higher. We do this by first scaring the goomba (making him jump up) and then knocking into the goomba (making him jump up again from midair). It is only after these two jumps that Mario bounces on the goomba, thereby allowing a very high bounce.
One last note is that in order to perform this strategy, we need to collect 100 coins for the 100 coin star. However, there aren't 100 coins accessible to Mario without pressing A. Therefore, I make use of the breaking/disappearing cork box glitch. You see, a cork box disappears after 30 seconds of inactivity (and respawns), and a cork box breaks if it comes into contact with anything (in this case a larger box). If these two things happen simultaneously, then the box will explode AND respawn, thereby creating 3 coins without destroying the box. I perform this trick over and over until I have enough coins to reach 100.

*-starts by collecting 100 coins*
That's what I love about your videos, they're always so creative.
I know, who would have guessed that the optimal way to collect Stand Tall on the Four Pillars would involve generating the 100 coin star first!
pannenkoek2012
Nobody.
How could anyone know about the star dance clip? I even encountered it myself while playing casually.
Optimal?
Well, if A button triggers extreme lag...
@@groszak1 talking about without pressing A :P im sure you know that by now tho
The goomba hitting u to elevate to the platform was genius, nice
Tyler Kehne and I actually both came up with that technique independently
Leiland Bradley What?
no ur the idot, idot
SoulAsasin Jr. He pressed A when he hit the goomba, you can see it when he slows it down at the end
@@CristianRodriguez005 No he didn't. By geting hit while in the air, he gained height, and then bounced off the Goomba
"oh i have to wait for the cap block to respawn"
"i could wait but also there's this sign"
"i'm going to grind on the sign for no fucking reason"
3 letters, RNG.
I thought he was just messing around.
The RNG value only changes in this game when the function is called. You can do that by making dust clouds, but this grinding really is just messing around.
I agree, he could have also just dusted by walking
TAS culture is to mess around when it doesn’t negatively affect the objective… barely miss enemies, grind on edges, whatever
Dear pannenkoek
You are insane. And by that, of course, I mean, insanely awesome. Keep doing what you do (which is glitching the ever-loving crap out of this game).
18 years I have played this game, and I never knew about that warp. Wow. How long is this in real-time (without fast forwards for the box cloning)? And the slow time sounds like Wario Land 4 music.
12 minutes. I'll add that to the description
+MetalYoshi ProGamer It's also worth noting that that warp is supposed to be one-way, but is usable by standing on the edge of the hangable gate.

There's another secret to find. It's in Whomp's Fortress. It's the fortress 1-up. Punch a side of the fortress and when you punch the correct one, you find a 1-up.
Raffy Tabingo I actually knew that one already hehe. I'd love to see all the warps I never saw as a kid, I'm sure I missed a ton
Yolo Hashtag
Whomp's fortress, near the metal cap block there is a warp that leads you to the part with the pole.

When I thought it was some super TAS tech or some glitch coming....he just punches the goombas out.
ROFL
Draxis32
And then uses a glitch by simply collecting a star. Pannenkoek2012 is nice.
The second he starts collecting coins, I know he's gonna use a hundred coin star to get a little bit of elevation. The lengths this man goes to just to avoid pressing A
I gotta HAND it to ya, that was great!

+pannenkoek2012 EYE see?
Rocking some puns again?
Awesome job, looks even better than I thought it would! I wonder if this star will make the final any% cut; it's 12 mins but it's also 2-for-1.
You wonder if _this_ star will make it? What about WDW red coins, DDD 100 coins, and RR 100 coins!
These are all fantastic.
these videos are like math class
Who needs jumps in a Super Mario game?
that´s just silly! B)
i find it really interesting that "stand tall on the four pillars" and "inside the ancient pyramid" basically are swapped around in the a button challenge. you stand tall on the four pillars to get "inside the ancient pyramid" and you go inside the ancient pyramid to get "stand tall on the four pillars".
Brilliant as always!
Absolutely brilliant
Thank you =P

Hands couldn't even blink an eye.
You should make more vids on the impossible goomba
HOLP tricks are sometimes funny and useful.
That was cool
Another Teleporter I had no idea about. wow
I'm actually curious now how you really use TAS. There are some actions you can't tell the tool to use by itself I'm guessing. Like collecting the coins out of every block that spawn with random trajectories. Or can you tell it to track down coins like that and just leave it running?
TAS is just inputs at each frame. And with knowledge of RNG Pannen can simply make the inputs walk towards the coins.
2:32 nice
Now do it without pressing anything
I remember, I used to think a TAS was just a human playing extremely well. I was so impressed, then I looked up what a TAS is, then I got disappointed, but still amazed.
Is there a full 70 star or 120 star ABC TAS anywhere?
1:09 was that an a press?
That was a dive recover, done by pressing b
Besides the Taylor dude u mentioned, there's another pannenkoek who makes star dance clips
haha, yes, my alternate account
pannenkoek2012 Oh and there is also an amp clip so you can also use the amp nearby for extra bounce (not sure if the amp is closer to the wire mesh or the floor , but the chance percentage increases if it's closer to the wire mesh )
I think amp is too low to be used for an effective amp clip.
pannenkoek2012 Oh ok
pannenkoek2012
Speaking of amp clips, I used an amp clip to get to the 3rd lowest crystal tap in WDW.
Skip 2:13-3:11 if you don't want to see him break the same cork box over and over and over again.
Bro, no one wants to skip pannen’s content
you can do this with 0x a presses, but can you kill the mistery goomba using only the z button?
Is it possible to beat the game without pressing "a" yet? (Grabbing the minimum amount of stars)
The only mandatory A press is in Bowser in the Fire Sea to hop off a pole.
no. there are like 37 left and thats it from 0 to 120
but for any% abc challenge there's only 1 a press left.

No, walljumping uses an a press.
Isn't that a one-way warp?
Cool
Very creative! Is it not possible to get the blue coins to save some time?
bkdjTAS We would need some way to ground pound the blue coin block, which I don't believe can be done without pressing A.
3:50
How you did that? Impressive 0_o
Do a speedrun
I'm kinda curious, if the game didn't kick you back to the castle after each star would you be able to save many A presses?
+Kzinssie (porygonlover322) 5 or 6 in Tick Tock Clock, but I think that’s it…
It would save some a presses for TTC, not sure if anyone has said this because im on a tablet and can not see replies currently.
How did you do the slide instantly after the star appeared?
I think I know, but I am not really sure
Usually, Mario needs at least 29 speed to dive. However, if I'm running parallel to an edge, then I can have Mario fall off slightly, dive in the air, and then come back onto the ground. There's no required speed to dive in the air, so I can dive at any speed this way. And of course, this is a convenient way to build up speed quickly from rest.
pannenkoek2012 That's what I thought
+pannenkoek2012 I understood... None of that.
Man i thought it was impossible without one jump. With the star dance clip are there more new ways to improve previous stars?
***** good to know, thx for the information!
***** Yeah it was floating around for awhile; the 120 star TAS even uses it on the WDW 100 coin star. But the realization that it could be useful for gaining vertical distance in ABC was very recent. Makes me wonder if there's any other obscure tricks out there we don't know about!
Tyler Kehne Well put!
+Tyler Kehne When was the first known discovery of this glitch?
@@TylerKehne sadly there definitely have not been any more obscure tricks found in the last 8 years
I think you have the wrong video title lol
not it should say something like SM64 - Shifting Sand Lands 100 coin star and (I don't know the name of the star with the hands) - 0x A Presses
Fireblaze3127 I actually agree with you, since an A press can only be saved by combining the stars. That's the reason pannenkoek2012 gives for the videos that do include both stars in the title (I think). On the other hand, it's a little different here because it's the act of collecting the star itself that's important, not the strat used to obtain it. So I see why he did it this way.
Fireblaze3127 The hand star WAS stand on the four pillars.
People actually look at this? Let me try to explain. For every course, I have a video for all 6 regular stars as well as the 100 coin star. Additionally, I may have a video for combining the 100 coin star with a regular star if there exists a strategy to get both stars such that it's fewer A presses than going for both stars individually. In this case, going for Stand Tall on the Four Pillars takes 0 A presses, going for the 100 coin star takes 0 A presses, and going for them together takes 0 A presses, and 0 is not less than 0 + 0. Thus, a video combining them wouldn't have any advantage over solely going for either of them. See, it wasn't a choice to combine both stars, it was simply the optimal way to collect Stand Tall on the Four Pillars. Additionally, if I used your naming system, then it wouldn't be possible to have a video called "Stand Tall on the Four Pillars" even if my intention was just to collect that star (which it is here). Furthermore, if other regular stars also made use of the 100 coin star in their strategy, then I would have to have multiple [regular star + 100 coin star] videos per course, even though I should only ever have one maximum per course. So in conclusion, collecting the 100 coin star here is simply a means to an end, namely a means to collect the star Stand Tall on the Four Pillars. This video was made solely to show the optimal way of collecting Stand Tall on the Four Pillars, and the 100 coin star just happened to be part of that strategy. It wasn't a free choice to combine those two stars, I had to out of necessity for the strategy.
pannenkoek2012 My guess is that he just didn't realize the 100 coin star was required for the strategy to work, even though you did explain it very well in the description.
0:28 Am I the only one who found that funny?
