Some of their stuff contains a fair amount of inaccuracies but overall they’re not too bad

Basically, a fine example of how courtly manners (literally) were defined in the 18th Century. A gentleman knew how to present himself and articulate his thoughts in the best and most polite, even noble, manner. Had either of them not done so, they would have embarrassed their respective nations and themselves.

As an Australian anglophile, I love that you have a positive view of Britain. I'd love to see you do a reaction about something Australian-centric. Both the Gallipoli (WWI) and Kokoda (WWII) campaigns played hugely important roles in forming Australia's identity, and though it is often spoken about here, I rarely see it given much attention outside of Australia and New Zealand. I would love to see your take on it.
Funny enough Gallipoli was talked about quite a bit in my standard public education where I grew up in the USA (the Pacific Northwest). Mostly because when it came to WW2 we focused on the Pacific Theater. Meaning there was a lot of talk of Amphibious operations. Naturally going back to Gallipoli and what a disaster it was. How most nations declared opposed landings just weren't possible in the modern world due to the failure. And how the US Navy basically said: "Here, hold my beer while I figure this one out" instead in over analyzing it and figuring out what is modern amphibious warfare from it (including several specialized inventions created to solve the problems from it).
But it was usually in that context.
But definitely is an episode of history that could use more spotlight. It's such a key turning point for both Australia and Turkey.

John Adams is one of my favorite series. Really helped me understand why John Adams is so underrated as a founding father.
He did well as 2nd president of the United States (although not great due to the Alien Sedition Act)

As president, Adams ran afoul of the very bitter divisions of the first party system. Generally considered a Federalist, Adams considered himself above party politics, and the actual Federalists (Hamilton being the chief) considered him ineffective. The Jeffersonians (falsely) claimed he was a "monarchist." In the end, he did outflank the revolutionary French government, which was trying to suborn American interests to its own. The Alien and Sedition Acts were a bad mistake, but we forget that party conflict was a new thing in the country, and there was every indication that the pro-French elements of the D-R Party were not playing footsie.
Commenting on your channel from across the pond. It's too easy and simplistic to go along with a lot of the rest of Europe's narrative about the problems with the USA. And although like every country America certainly does have it's problems, I'm a big fan of many aspects of your nation and absolutely will be visiting some day in the not-too-distant future. We share so much in the way of values and traditions and aspirations for the world at large and are far far better off being closely allied than at loggerheads. Love your videos man and respect for your love of the UK too, wholesome af. All the best.

@@jimbell364 its history? Yes. But its culture? No. Is the holocaust a part of German culture? Is imperialism a part of British culture? Is fascism a part of Spanish culture? Is human sacrifice a part of Mexican (Aztec) culture? All of these things are important in history and they have absolutely had an affect on culture, but it is disingenuous to refer to a country's shortcomings (however atrocious and unforgivable they may be) as part of its culture and to write off anything that comes out of that country as a result.

@@strahaironscale571 are you British? if you are I don’t understand what you hate about the UK. We’ve provided you with so many opportunities and you shouldn’t take them for granted. A lot of immigrants in Britain are awesome, and that’s because they’ve experienced horrible things and had no opportunities to be in a career they want to be in so they are extremely grateful to Britain and they pledge their lives to the country, just like I pledge my life to Britain.
This is great, two channels I've been hoping you'd cover for so long, Historia Civilis and History matters, and you start reacting to them in the same week :D
When 9/11 happened, a good chunk of Britain felt *personally* affronted as if it had occurred in our own realm. There's a reason that the British public started off supporting going to Afghan for war; the Anglosphere had been harmed.
Equally, and this is anecdotal, when my mother visited the US she saw several times where Americans would thank British (and Australian) service personnel for their service as if they were American soldiers.
The Anglosphere has simply returned to its natural state; the Anglo Saxon multi-kingdom model, where we have different Kings, different policies, but by Gods if you attack one you attack us all.
The usa is not in the Anglo-sphere
@@jimbell364 Yes, it is. The term "Anglosphere" doesn't refer only to the Commonwealth, but to all nations with a basis in English language, culture, history and law.
The US is in what's called the "core Anglosphere" along with the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. On top of that other nations like South Africa and Ireland are included sometimes.
It would have taken you two minutes to look it up.

Just recently discovered your channel. I'm a total history junkie and really enjoy your indepth thoughts and theories.
History matters has some longer 10 minute videos doing deep dives which I would think are a little more your pace. He said he shifted to 3 minute videos because the 10 minute ones were getting demonitized, and were more production heavy. Whereas the 3 min ones are less production heavy and since there is more quantity, it's less likely that the videos will get demonitized

If I recall rightly Washington’s administration was not particularly anti-British at all, rather it was Jefferson’s administration was the start of the post-Independence animosity
@@philmccracken7520 I wasn’t saying he was a fan of the British, I was saying that compared to the Jefferson administration the policies were ‘reasonable’ (the administration, not the men as individuals necessarily)

This video is very well done from both of you. When I was in high school 20+ years ago we learnt very loosely about the revolution here in the uk and that’s it. After that we learnt about the tudors because it affected how we view religion now and the world wars. So thank you cos I have always wondered how the uk and usa became friendly allies 😂

@@Bananaaaa765 it's not just about the language. Our cultures are very similar too. You could take a Brit, an Aussie, an American and a Canadian and have all of us switch countries with each other, besides a few trivial things, we could comfortably live in each other's countries

I'm lso a big Anglophile from Texas and I am typing this from St. Andrews, where I am studying for a semester. I have been trying to get over here since the start of Pandemic. I love Texas and the US, but on a rainy day (figuratively rainy, given I'm in Scotland), Oxford is also a great place I could live.

Great reaction as usually, so much insight. Interesting the video didnt mention of the burning of the white house or the war of the 1812 in the beginning. It was huge hiccup in the relationship.

@@yannick4895 Yes that is History Matters' style. There is a lot of content to fit in a short period of time, so quick background images and oblique references are a major component of the discourse. Doing quick pauses, with frequent backups, to help catch everything will be a good task for a reactor to perform.
Really good book recommendation. “Last Flag Down” tells the story of the Confederate ship the Shenandoah which also had roots in Great Britain during the Civil War.
You should consider reacting to historical video game clips. I recommend starting with a total war cinematic battle

A 4 minute video that you add an additional 10 minutes of content to. Your reaction videos are so much higher quality than anyone else's because you generally are able to double the amount of insight that the video on its own gives.

One factor that helped the rapprochement was that the U.S. and the British were able to settle their border disputes pretty much during the first half of the 19th century. The Oregon Treaty of 1846 settled the boundaries between the Oregon Territory and what became British Columbia, and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 settled the line between New Brunswick and Maine. Those agreements paved the way and set the conditions for a peaceful border, allowing for U.S.-Canadian relations to develop well over time. Proof that sound diplomacy really is the best long-term solution to potential conflicts.
I think it is agreed by most historians that the last time the USA and the UK had a real threat of going to war with each other was the Trent Affairs in. When a US ship forced a UK vessel to turn over its Confederate States of America Diplomats. One Warvat a time" Lincoln said in resolving the matter. It was uphill from there.

In the John Adams Miniseries, the scene where Adams meets King George, for one quick cut, after the king said he would be the first to meet the US as an independent power and Adams says thank you, they showed the king lean back and let out a smile. I'd like to believe when he did that, in his mind he said, "Ya cheeky Brits. Bloody genius with this United States idea ya got there."

I love that they tried to get the actors to do the varieties of British and American accents that would have common in those times and places, in the John Adams mini-series. So rarely attempted, even though they're not hard to reconstruct with some accuracy because historical linguistics has become quite a sophisticated field of study.

History Matters is great. I love their style.
History Matters videos are short but dense. Every person in every scene is placed there on purpose. Usually you can figure out who they are (i.e. famous politicians etc.). Also pay attention to the portraits on the walls in the background.

It's only a Union Jack if it's flown from the jackstaff on a ship. Terrestrially it's still called the Union Flag.
Technically that is true but it's become a colloquial term, much like the "Confederate Flag" which is technically the battle flag of the Army of Tennessee.

I'm not sure if you've been recommended this yet, but the alternate history hub video about the "what if Woodrow Wilson never won the presidency" scenario I think you would enjoy. Even if you don't react to it on the channel, I still think you would enjoy.
We did not secede from Britain because we hated the British. In fact, the vast majority of the colonists were proud to be British because they felt they had more freedom to live their lives than anywhere else on earth. However, parliament began to rule the colonies more directly with new laws and taxes. The colonists protested believing they were an assault on their historic rights as Englishmen. Still, the colonies petitioned the King hoping for a peaceful reconcilation. When it was clear the King and Parliament would not listen. That's when we declared independence.
