  • It is amazing how easy it is for a big rig to get stuck. This guy was trying to pop the curb in a small hometown pharmacy. I don't really even know what he was trying to do.

      Yeah there is a lot of retarded drivers out there but this one totally seems like inexperience combined with bad luck. I doubt there isn't one trucker out there that hasn't made the mistake of pulling into a parking lot that was to small to maneuver out of at least once while they were learning. He'll probably be more cautious next time

    Even after 20 years I still have an occasional bad day. You get to the point where you are so used to doing things in a particular order that if you get interrupted it is easy to think you already did a step. I have learned to go back and walk myself through steps. I have hopped into the driver seat only to question myself as to whether I raised/lowered the landing gear, connected/ disconnected air lines, whatever. Then I grumble and hop back out. This scene is precisely why.

  • @goofyexponent
    @goofyexponent 9 ปีที่แล้ว +187

    So you're a truck driver then?
    What has happened here was he most likely made a wide turn and was forced to drive off the curb. Most likely because some DUMBASS 4 wheeler driver was in the way. The trailer has the rear drive tire pinched between the ground and the trailer.
    Anyways, to get that truck OFF the curb, you need to....
    1) Raise the landing gear
    2) Hook the air line back up to the trailer.
    3) Disconnect the air ride "ride height" rod for either the back axle, or for both axles if only one rod is present.
    4) Pull up on the ride height rod and either electrical tape it, wire it up or zip tie it up. This will force more air to the air bags and lift the trailer and back of the truck frame up....and it will give you traction again.
    Once you get free, put the air ride control rod back onto it's perch on the axle and continue on.
    I AM a truck driver, and I HAVE put this into practice for myself, and for other when I drove a 40 ton wrecker.
    The driver here is not retarded, he just has not been shown the tricks of the trade...new at the game. Not everyone is a pro when they first start out.

    • @goofyexponent
      @goofyexponent 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      kc5rui thank you. I am just so sick of seeing videos like this and having people who have NEVER driven a truck, calling us truckers, idiots.
      I had a guy I know, as a passenger one day. He made the comment that you have to be stupid to drive as it is soooo easy.
      I pulled over and switched him seats on a back road, a logging road. The truck never left low gear, and only went 15 feet after stalling 10 times.
      His view changed.

    • @goofyexponent
      @goofyexponent 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kc5rui I wish they would too. It never ceases to amaze me...what 4 wheelers do to trucks.

    • @goofyexponent
      @goofyexponent 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael curry I think the weight of the trailer just has the bags compressed...could be wrong though.
      He has the truck tires pinched though.

    • @izzytherat1
      @izzytherat1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes cause you can see the other side spinning. But he is not accomplishing anything by spinning his tires. He needs to get out get a full picture and evaluate the situation before he burns the clutch or blows up the power divider.

    • @goofyexponent
      @goofyexponent 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      michael curry The reason he other side is spinning on the back axle is because he does not have an axle lock...he just has a power divider...which will send power to ONE wheel on each drive axle.
      The passenger side rear drive wheels are being pinched by the 5th wheel plate on the bottom of the trailer and the ground.
      If he does exactly what I said in my original post, that will lift the trailer, force the rubber onto the road and he could pull ahead/backwards.
      The problem with most modern day air ride is this: they have a single air ride height valve that is 9 times out of 10 located on the front drive axle with the power divider in it.
      When he drives over a curb and stops with the back axle still on it, the air ride valve drops to the over height position and begins dumping air pressure....LESSENING the traction the truck already has. It basically stops outing weight on the axles and the only tire contact weight is from the unsprung weight of the axle.
      Disconnecting the control ride valve, and lifting it up will fill the bags and lift the truck up.
      I've done this MANY times and it works EVERY time.

      where his trailer ended up doesn't allow for a better pick. any way he picks it leaves 1 drive tire off the ground because of that curb. he'd be better off chunking a block under a tire and pulling ahead. the curb would keep it in place. either that or lock in the differential (if it has diff locks). or dump his airbags (if he has the option).

    • @bobmaki3000

      Don't hurt my feelings now...
      Your obviously the dimwit here. You obviously have no clue how trucks operate. Why would he leave 1 airline hooked up to reposition? If he did catch traction, he would have just ripped it off. That little curb isn't going to tip a trailer...I know, because I drive truck. If the air suspension is no good for following road contours, why would the put it on every truck? I can tell you, that every truck I've driven handles and rides better than any car I've ever sat in.
      This is something that happens to every truck driver on occasion. This guy just didn't know what to do. I had it happen to me in a flat parking lot. When I parked my truck, the drives were suspended over a slight trough in the asphalt. I went to leave and my tires just spun. So I dumped my airbags and drove ahead.

    Ultimately we don't really know what's in this guy's head. (Just it isn't much). We can see what he is not trying to do. He is not trying to drive either away with the trailer or out from under it. How it got into this position without visible damage is anyone's guess.
    The landing gear is all the way down. It appears, if the gear was raised, the trailer would lower onto the tag axle and pinch the tire between it and the ground. Trailer looks to be loaded. Again how it got this way??? Only the red air hose is attached, which is to release the trailer's brakes. The blue one (to operate the brakes) and the plug for lights are not hooked up. This is how it would be to move the trailer. If this happened while driving then why did he disconnect the blue and the lights? If he is attempting to pull out (like maybe his father should have done) then he would have disconnected the red line.
    This can all be summed up as "He has gotten himself into a Dilly of a Pickle"

    • @Eddie_Schantz
      @Eddie_Schantz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your absolutely right. As long as that trailer is sitting on the rear driver, he is NOT going anywhere. Putting the dollies down added to the problem he already has, that is, unless he has pulled the pin latch and was trying to drive out from under the trailer. I got into a situation like this once & that is what I did, & then backed under the trailer again from a different angle. He is not doing a thing here except wearing out that tire from spinning it. You would think that after about 30 seconds of this he would come to the conclusion that he is not getting anywhere doing this.

      he did, his front set was spinning on the right side, and his back set was spinning on the left, due to the both diffs, the weel with the less friction wil spin, these diffs have no blocking to conect right and left wheels, solution can be to ucouple the trailer, remove the truck on his own power, and reconnect in a better position, he can also call a recovery truck, than he can stay in his cabin..(best option)

    Does anyone commenting see that the driver side rear tire is turning? Clearly, the divider IS locked in. The drivers rear is off the ground because the curb ENDS underneith the rear axle. Just because a tractor has a power divider doesn't mean it can lock all 4 corners together. Also, it appears the driver is making an attempt to do something (not exactly sure what), as he has the supply line hooked up only and the service line and electrical cord unhoooked.

The landing gear was lowered to lift the trailer from the trucks drives. Apparently the driver tried to hop the curb but misjudged the curbs depth. For anyone who DOESN'T know anything about trucks. Listen up.
    Lock the park braks on. Meaning pull you YELLOW valve OUT like you are parking.
    Stick the power divider in (every tandem axle truck SHOULD have one) and put the truck in either REVERSE or LOW forward. Ease the clutch up and give it a little fuel.
    The park brakes equalize the resistance on the tires....the truck will move in the direction you are trying to go.

      toya burris if you look close enough you will see that the trailer is jammed between the tires and the skid plate of the trailer. No way is he getting out without taking pressure off the tires and getting clearance between the trailer and fifth wheel.

  • @andrewfox9516

    (excerpt from a conversation) No need to drag the legs...They go up another foot or more! The red line is the emergency line which is enough to release the brakes but not enough to use the service brake. I suspect that this guy may have been sent out to move the trailer after another truck had a mechanical failure AND it is very difficult to move the landing gear up or down when it is wedged. The right way to handle this situation is to chock the trailer wheels from behind, engage the differential and push backward enough to relieve the pressure on the landing gear so it can be raised. The trailer is not moving because there is neither enough weight on the truck to get traction nor enough weight removed from the landing gear to allow free rolling. The other alternative is to disconnect the tractor, lower the trailer on its gear, and then reconnect the tractor to gain ground clearance!

    • @davej87
      @davej87 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No idea if US trailers are different to UK ones but our legs have two speeds of winding. It is quite easy to wind legs up or down without even being connected to a unit. Just put them in slow wind mode by pushing the arm all the way in.

    • @andrewfox9516
      @andrewfox9516 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpongeMonkey531 That certainly has to happen here. One problem is that the gear might be wedged because of the position that the tractor is in. The other problem I see is that the trailer is high centered on a set of tires.

    • @wheelholder12
      @wheelholder12 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are right but if you look at the position he is in it just won't happen. if you spin your tires you have no traction and its traction thats going to get you out.He has to get the trailer off the tire. Raise the front of the tractor see what happens and if the pressure comes off the tire then put some 2x6 down and drive away. if it doesn't then back to sq.1

    Got a service call kinda similar to this once, straight box truck hung on the tailboard with the tires spinning. Dumped the air suspension on the truck, jacked up the axle with an automotive floor jack (all the weight was on the bumper, just lifting the tires and axle) blocked under the tires, reinflated the suspension which lifted the bumper & had him drive off.

    I was in this situation once, hooked to a trailer gave it a tug to see if I was hooked up, pulled out of a up hill dock went about a 1/4 mile down to uturn to come out of this particular warehouse, in the middle of my uturn the trailer came loose fell onto the drive wheels, not knowing any better I tried cranking the gear down to free myself to get back under the trailer. In the process I broke the ring gears in the axle and lost my job. Maybe this will help some one in the future don't take any thing like that on by your self until you check with your shop or mechanic whatever. It will save you a lot of hassle

    As a truck driver, it's difficult to say what he/she could have been trying to do solely based on the content of this short video. The landing gear is lowered to the ground, but the tractor is at a very odd angle to the trailer (not lined up straight). The trailer doesn't budge at all and is still showing all the Hazmat placards which means it's loaded (probably heavy). It appears to me this was in a very small space/parking lot not made for large trailers. Depending on whether the trailer was being picked up or dropped, I doubt dropping the suspension air bags would achieve anything. There are times we have to deal with unusual circumstances.

    My guess is he dropped his landing gear in an effort to get his fifth wheel free. Something like this happened to me once while pulling a double drop flatbead. I delivered a jet engine to an airport and the road in had a slight decline from the public road. On the way out the same route, as I turned up onto that same public road, the double drop ran aground stopping me dead in the middle of the road. I could not get free. I tried using my landing gear like this guy but nothing would free the bound fifth wheel. It took a tow truck to free me.

    very simple solution! Set brakes, dolly up landing gear all the way up, hook up service air gladhand, pull pin on airbag leveler and make it air the bags all the way up, kick in power divider, release brakes, roll off of curb and straighten out, set brakes, and reset airbag leveler pin back in place!! Had to do this for several drivers during my 33yrs otr! Good day!!

    For the argument about the legs; if you look at 0:09, you can see them move as the the truck jerks, so yes, they are down. I can understand the reasoning: Lift the trailer off the drive wheels, it should move. However, to make that work, they would need to place something solid, yet movable, under the right side. That would tilt the trailer to match the rears on the tractor.

    As a former trucker from the old school, I would have gone over and shown him the error of his way and then helped him. All he would have to have done was to properly rolled up his landing gear all the way like he should have done in the first place before he started his trip. If he would have, he wouldn't be in this humiliating situation.
    As it is, he clearly didn't retract his landing gear fully. In the famous words of Homer Simpson "Doh!"

    Alright I'll go with: 'hook the blue air line up, raise the landing gear, set one chain on the left rear drive. Either a full chain hookup, or maybe first with a 'cheater chain'. Or, lay the chain on the sidewalk,,,up against the tire, and try it in reverse. Since the left rear are turning, too, this might work. Might sling the chain forward tho, so be prepared for that. All you need is a few inches and it will pull. Might try the same steps and put a 2" x 6" piece of wood under l/r wheel, too, and see if it will walk up on it, and then off,,all in reverse. Could also try all the steps above, and put the wood blocks under the right front wheel, and go forward with it. it might walk up and out from there. If these don't work,,,maybe call up your buddy w/his 3/4 t. Chevy and his log chain. Don't call him if he has a Ford, or Dodge,,,hahahaha

  • @roberthuttle

    A couple factors
    this tractor may have a dummy or floater rear axle.(it has no drive shaft providing power) and even if it did, the angle of the grade between the tractor and trailer is causing the rear axle tires to hit the bottom of the trailer.
    Without being towed forward.
    I would drop the landing gear and unhook. reposition and or jockey the trailer some and re-attempt.

    You can see the dirt kicked out on the left. His trailer jack stands likely scraped on the cement curbing or when the truck shook as he hit the curb without him knowing, disengaged themselves, and got wedged... and now he doesn't know why he can't move. Simple. R&L Carriers workforce is mostly rookie truckers that are learning the ropes.

    Many of you people are making comments not knowing a thing about the situation....Perhaps he had no choice but to pop that curb a little bit...The video does not show us anything else....Perhaps there is some construction he cant fit through, Any trucker knows this happens all the time, you cant get through due to an accident, construction, unexpected road closure...has happened to anyone who has driven tractor trailer enough. Regarding what he is doing to get out of it, I can clearly see that his drivers side rear axle is moving in the video so he did lock in the power divider and not every tractor has the ability to get positive traction to both tires, many tractors only power the side with the least resistance or in this case the side that is completely off the ground. I have been in a situation similar to this and what worked for me was dumping the airbags moved my axle just close enough to the ground to get me enough traction to get moved. At least he didn't tear up the truck like the USA truck that tried to u turn for the low bridge.
