It's amazing to see her development, from someone who could barely fight some random guy to someone who can take three members of the League of Assassins at once. It's so sad that the producers killed her before she could reach her potential, but luckly Earth-2 Laurel made her justice.

      Crying Canary
9 Things The Arrowverse Got Wrong About Black Canary
The Arrowverse has faithfully adapted many DC Comics characters to the small screen, but the Black Canary has gone through a number of questionable changes in regards to her character. While some of these shifts have been to benefit the show and the overall narrative, some are confusing or just plain random. Over the years, the fans have voiced both their concerns and their praise for the iterations of the heroine that we've seen on Arrow. Some aspects of the warrior are spot on, with the costume being a notable design choice which should be celebrated. But, although they have obviously gotten some things so right, they've also made other decisions that are completely wrong. Here are some of the more controversial changes made to the iconic character.
      10
      OLIVER QUEEN ROMANCE
Green Arrow and Black Canary are one of comic's most famous couples. The crime fighting duo have a long history together and it was assumed that the show would follow this formula and continue this long legacy of romance. To the surprise of many though, the romance between Laurel Lance and Oliver Queen was on and off at best. Although they had dated in the past, the two were very much single for most of the show. They had a few moments where they were paired up once more, but the focus was usually on Felicity Smoke and her relationship with Queen. Laurel's death marked the end of the potential rekindling.
      9
      HER FATHER
The comics see a couple of different versions of Black Canary's father, although none of them quite line up with what we've seen in the show. The most notable version of her dad is called Richard Drake and he is a part of the Gotham City Police force. Indeed, Quentin is a part of the police (although in Star City rather than Gotham in the show) and is remarkably different from the comic version. Quentin has a really compelling story arc over the series and although the show got the character wrong in terms of their adaptation, they may have improved him overall.
      8
      HER MOTHER
Canary's mother is in much the same boat as her father, as the two versions couldn't be more different. In the comics her mother is shown to actually be the original Black Canary, known as Dinah Drake Lance, before eventually passing the role onto her daughter, Dinah Laurel Lance. In the show her mother is barely mentioned and only makes a couple of appearances played by Alex Kingston. She's largely irrelevant and is only included to increase the dramatic tension between the Lance family, rather than actually adding anything in terms of the super heroics.
      7
      HER SISTER
This is another area where the Arrowverse may have actually made the characters involved a little more interesting, although at the cost of the source material. The show runners decided to create a completely new character called Sara Lance, the sister to Laurel. She's had a lot going on across the multiple shows that the CW produce, though, and has died and returned numerous times, has dropped the Black Canary name and become the White Canary! She's now a part of the time travelling team known as the Legends. Sometimes morally ambiguous with a lot of darkness in her, Sara was right for the show.
      6
      TWO CANARIES
Aside from Sara donning the suit, there's one other notable woman who has become the Black Canary in the Arrowverse. The series has introduced both Laurel Lance (who we've spoken about so far) and Dinah Drake as completely separate characters. In the comics they are the same person, Dinah Laurel Lance. For the show to pull this off, though, they had to create two heroes that were polar opposites of one another. They had to make them distinct personalities to ensure that this big change was worth it. For the most part they've succeeded, with Laurel and Dinah representing two very different things.
      5
      VINCENT SOBEL
A major part of Dinah's story in the Arrowverse is her relationship with love interest Vincent Sobel. Vincent is a part of a long running mystery, as he is the alter ego of the masked anti-hero known as the Vigilante. He's a former partner to Dinah and was presumed dead after she watched him become fatally injured. In the comics the Vigilante exists in a few different ways, but none in the way that Arrow has portrayed him. What's more, the comics don't seem to have a direct comparison of Vincent, with the character largely being a creation of the show, with random qualities from other Dinah Drake love interests.
      4
      COMBAT EXPERTISE
One of Black Canary's core skills in the comics is her combat expertise. She's well-trained in numerous martial arts and is equipped for any combat situation. While she uses her signature staff in battle, she's just as lethal with her hands after years of gruelling experiences and a long history as a masked vigilante. In Arrow Dinah Drake is pretty lethal herself, with her police training and her heroic lifestyle giving her many of the same attributes. Laurel Lance, however, provides very little in the way of proficient hand to hand combat. We watch her development over the years but it's clear that this kind of physicality doesn't come easy to her. It's completely wrong for the character and has been somewhat corrected by Black Siren.
      3
      CANARY CRY
The Canary Cry is a trademark of the character and is a superhuman ability that can send dangerous sound waves from the voice of the heroine. In the comics this has been explained as a meta-human ability, but has also been shown created from both a magical spell and an alien abduction. In the show once again Dinah Drake has this one right, with the character being introduced with a meta-ability. This is later removed by the Star City Slayer and she must now rely on a piece of technology. This technology is what gives Laurel Lance the Cry, though. This is a drastic shift from the comics and once again it seems that the show runners have tried to correct that with later versions of the character.
      2
      SHE'S A LAWYER
It's already well established by this point that by day the Black Canary is usually a key member of law enforcement. Whether it's as a police officer, as many of her family have been before, or even as a covert operative for a governmental group, she's usually involved with the law in one way or another. This is true for the most part in Arrow, although there's a real twist on it for Laurel Lance. One again, Dinah Drake is mostly accurate, with the heroine a mainstay in the Star City Police Department and actually their Captain eventually. Laurel on the other hand is actually a lawyer, with many of the initial seasons focusing heavily on her career. It was a weird choice and one that slowed the pace of the show.

Honestly the writers just forgot how skilled Laurel actually was. I mean she had self defence classes , trained with Ted Grant, trained with Nyssa al ghul and the rest of Team Arrow. It’s just unfair how the writers nerfed her and other characters in the show such as Roy,Thea,Nyssa and Diggle just to make Oliver look good. I mean all the characters I just mentioned plus Laurel could beat Oliver or at least match him in hand to hand.

"Please... please don't let me be the last Canary. That way, a part of me will always be out there with you."
-Laurel's last words to Oliver Queen.[src]
Dinah Laurel Lance (November 15, 1985[1] - April 6, 2016[2]), better known as Laurel Lance, was a citizen of Star City and one of its most beloved public servants.[3] Laurel was the oldest daughter of the late Quentin Lance and Dinah Lance (after whom she was named), the older sister of Sara Lance, the ex-girlfriend/longtime friend of Oliver Queen, and longtime friend/ex-girlfriend of the late Tommy Merlyn. She was a lawyer who held the position of assistant district attorney and was previously a former legal aid attorney. However, after the death of her sister, Laurel was inspired to take up vigilantism and received training from Ted Grant and later by her close friend and Sara's former lover, Nyssa al Ghul. She eventually joined Team Arrow and became known as the Black Canary, the second Canary of her beloved city.
Laurel was fatally stabbed by Damien Darhk during his prison escape and passed away surrounded by the team just moments before her father arrived.[4] Following her death, her actions as Black Canary were made public by Oliver in order to preserve her reputation as a hero to Star City; her identity as Black Canary is left on her own tombstone.
2 years after her death, Earth-2 Laurel Lance, reveals herself to the public (pretending to be her late Earth-1 counterpart) in order to protect herself from Ricardo Diaz, she states to the press that her death was faked by H.I.V.E. and that she had been tortured by the organization for the last 2 years; as the public is now convinced that (Earth-1) Laurel is alive.

    Functions
Sonic attack: Like the sonic device, the user can utilize the Canary Cry to generate sonic waves. Whilst in the field, Laurel Lance wears the collar on her neck to produce high frequency waves which have proven to be powerful enough to shatter glass and blast an adult male several feet back through the air. It appears to be activated by the wearer's shriek (making it look like a sonic scream).
Voice recognition: Cisco Ramon designed the Canary Cry to specifically recognize and work with only Laurel's vocal cords.

    Trivia
The Canary Cry is the ability used by Black Canary in DC comic books and was showcased in various other media. Generally, the Canary Cry is initially portrayed as a magically-induced and later genetic ability that Black Canary was born with. However, after having her throat slit during a mission gone wrong with Green Arrow, Black Canary lost her meta-human ability due to the damage to her vocal cords. Afterwards, she was given a technological sonic device that could mimic her original abilities. Eventually, Black Canary's powers were restored after she was given access to a Lazarus Pit by Ra's al Ghul.
    Behind the scenes
The design of the Canary Cry weapon as a choker is a nod to Black Canary's classic costume.

After five months, Laurel adopted a second tonfa when facing H.I.V.E. to help her deal with multiple opponents.

Expandable batons: After taking on the mantle of Black Canary, Laurel used Sara's bo-staff to fight crime. The staff consists of a pair of expandable batons, which are able to combine into a bo-staff. Laurel later abandoned this weapon in favor of a tactical tonfa.
Sonic device: Laurel once used her sister's sonic device to stun two criminals and break their car windows. She later abandoned this device after asking Cisco Ramon to make her a modified version.
Blonde wig: Like Sara, Laurel initially wore a beach-blonde wig to hide her identity as Black Canary before abandoning it.

    Biography
    Early life
In her early youth, Dinah met and fell in love with Quentin Lance and the two moved into their own apartment together at Spring Street while they were in their early 20s. Dinah apparently turned down Quentin's multiple proposals until the right moment and insisted their love didn't require rings. She later became a college professor in Starling City. Dinah and Quentin eventually married and on November 15, 1985, Dinah gave birth to their first daughter, Dinah Laurel Lance, who was named after her. On December 25, 1987, she and Quentin had another daughter, Sara Lance. Dinah was very close to her daughters as they grew up and would fondly watch them play together. She shared a particularly strong bond with her youngest daughter, Sara, in part due to their similar natures as "wild spirits". When Laurel began dating Oliver Queen, Dinah developed a soft spot for the boy, unlike Quentin. One day in late 2007, Dinah was grading some papers while Quentin prepared lunch. When Quentin suggested Laurel, who would attend law school soon, become a professor like her mother, Dinah dryly commented that academia was always fun. Sara then paid a surprise visit from college. A couple days later, Dinah came home from work early and found Sara packing a bag with her belongings, including her Starling City Rockets baseball cap, for her trip on the Queen's Gambit with Oliver. Upon realizing her daughter's intentions, Dinah tried to prevent Sara from going, imploring her not to hurt Laurel. However, Sara insisted she was in love and wanted to follow her heart, even if no one else agreed - something Dinah had once done with Quentin. When Sara then left, Dinah didn't try to stop her. When Sara was apparently killed following the Gambit sinking during a storm, Dinah was horrified and guilt-ridden over her daughter's death. While Laurel was away at law school, Dinah and Quentin's marriage became strained as Quentin buried himself in his work to cope with his grief, despite Dinah's pleas for him to go to counseling with her. Eventually, the two divorced around 2009. Dinah relocated to Central City soon after and became a professor at Central City University, teaching Greek and Medieval History. She had no contact with Quentin and Laurel for years, unable to face them with her unwitting role in Sara's death. However, Dinah felt that Sara was still alive and for years, used her intelligence and resources to try and find her daughter.
Searching for Sara and reconciling with her family
Over three years later in February 2013, Dinah returned to Starling City and tried to call Laurel, but her daughter refused to answer. Later that night, Dinah appeared at Laurel's door. She apologized for her past mistakes and proclaimed that Sara might still be alive. The next morning, Dinah and Laurel met Quentin at Big Belly Burger, where Dinah told him her belief about Sara surviving the sinking of the Queen's Gambit. She showed that Lian Yu, where Oliver was recently rescued from, is surrounded by thousands of deserted islands in the same chain in the North China Sea, theorizing that Sara could've washed up on any one of them. Dinah then brought out a tourist photo of a woman on one of the islands wearing a Starling Rockets baseball cap, who looked similar to Sara, expressing how their daughter is a "survivor". However, Quentin refused to believe her and walked out, much to Dinah's disappointment. The next day, Quentin went to see Dinah at Laurel's apartment. When he was unreceptive amidst her attempts to talk about the past, they ended up having an argument about Sara and their divorce. Dinah stated that Quentin buried himself in his work, taking case after case despite her attempts to help him. Quentin angrily pointed out unlike her, that he still stayed for Laurel. Shaken, Dinah admitted that abandoning Laurel is her biggest regret, but Quentin left her first. She then stormed off, leaving Quentin to see himself out. Later, Quentin had Dinah meet him at the Starling City Police Department precinct, now ready to listen to her theory. Dinah and Quentin began working together to find Sara by gathering more evidence and contacting foreign governments. Later, Laurel had Quentin and Dinah meet her at CNRI, where she introduced them to Jenn, the girl in the photo Dinah found, whom Laurel had tracked down. Jenn explained the picture of her was taken in a fishing village called Zhengjiu, which is Mandarin for "Salvation", whilst she was on a six-month trip. Dinah rushed out, distressed. Back at Laurel's apartment, Dinah refused to give up her search despite Quentin's protests. Laurel then wondered how Dinah knew Sara took her Starling Rockets cap on the Queen's Gambit, since it was why she was so convinced the girl in the photo was Sara. After some hesitation, Dinah confessed she learned ahead of time that Sara wanted to go on the Gambit with Oliver and was ultimately convinced to grant her daughter permission to do so. Dinah broke down in tears, apologizing, as Quentin comforted her. That night, Dinah prepared to leave for Central City, stating she would be "home in a flash" due to taking the red-eye flight. Laurel told her mother to keep in touch and call anytime, forgiving her. Touched, Dinah promised to do so. The two hugged and exchanged "I love you's" before Dinah left.
    Reuniting with Sara
Dinah and Laurel talked on the phone. Laurel tells her mom she likes her new job as an assistant district attorney, which is helping after recent events. When Thea Queen arrived at the office, Laurel hung up, promising to call Dinah back. When Laurel apparently overdosed, Dinah returned to Starling City and visited her daughter at the hospital alongside Quentin and Oliver. Later that night while watching over Laurel, Dinah was abducted from the hospital by a member of the League of Assassins to be used as leverage to get Sara to return to them, mainly Nyssa al Ghul. Much later, Quentin found Dinah, with Sara confirming what Dinah had thought all along, that Sara was still alive. However Sara then passed out from self-poisoning. Out of rage, Nyssa tried to kill Dinah and Quentin until the The Arrow intervened. After the fight was over, Quentin and Dinah had a proper reunion with their long-lost daughter as Laurel watched in shock. Though Dinah was overjoyed that Sara was home, Laurel wasn't and even threw a glass of wine at her out of rage in front of Dinah. Dinah, along with Quentin, attended Sara's "Welcome Back" party at the Queen Mansion. Moira Queen happily told Dinah she was glad the latter has Sara back, understanding how painful it was believing her daughter to be dead all those years. Dinah and Quentin seemed to share a moment at the party but were interrupted when Quentin was called away to a bank robbery. The next night at Laurel's apartment, the whole Lance family gathered for dinner in Quentin's attempt to rekindle his relationship with Dinah. When Quentin talked to Dinah about leaving Central City and coming back to Starling, Dinah admitted to being happy with her new life and her job there, not wishing to move back. When Quentin tried to persuade her even further, she admitted to also being in a relationship. An awkward silence followed, but then Sara and Oliver, who also attended the family dinner, congratulated her. However, Laurel stormed out upon realizing Sara and Oliver were together. Later before returning to Central City, Dinah visited Quentin at the SCPD and apologized for not telling him sooner about her and Jeff. He tried to apologize for his intentions at dinner but Dinah assured Quentin that even though they're not together, she'll always care about him and is here for both him and their daughters. Dinah gave Quentin a kiss before leaving.
    Losing Sara again
At the SCPD, Dinah paid a visit to her daughter and ex-husband for Christmas. She and Laurel later went out for coffee, during which Dinah asked where Sara was, and pressured Laurel to telling the truth. Laurel revealed that Sara was dead, but begged her mother to not tell Quentin. Later at the cemetery, Laurel and Dinah visited Sara's grave. Laurel promised her mother that she would find Sara's killer, no matter what it took.
    Sara's return
Almost a year later, following Sara's resurrection and John Constantine restoring her soul, Dinah was contacted and informed by her daughter that she was alive, much to her surprise and joy. Sara later came to visit Dinah in Central City for a few days. A couple weeks later, Dinah was visited by Laurel in Central City.
    Losing another daughter
When Damien Darhk killed Laurel, Dinah came back to Star City and was once again in grief. She went to her funeral with her ex-husband Quentin. She told Quentin that Laurel will come back just like Sara did, but Quentin, who had hoped for the same thing before Oliver talked him out of it, no longer thought so. During the funeral, Oliver revealed to everyone that Laurel was the Black Canary, which shocked Dinah because she never knew that Laurel became the Black Canary after Sara was the Canary.

To be honest, i think that Laurel never had enough strength to be a real “Black Canary”. And i blame the producers. She didn’t have a good timeline where her story as becoming a hero could happen. A good Black Canary is E2 Laurel. That’s what i call a timeline to become a hero.

    History
After Laurel Lance approached Cisco Ramon to improve her sister Sara's sonic device, he refitted it to work in a collar, known as the "Canary Cry", though more powerful; Cisco quadrupled the range of the sonic blast and tripled the resonance. In return, Laurel gave Cisco a picture of him and the Black Canary together. Laurel used the Canary Cry to attack and stun her opponents whilst in the field as Black Canary. She also took down opponents with special technological abilities; Curtis Holt once briefly adjusted the Canary Cry's scream so Laurel could cancel out the frequency of Brie Larvan's robotic bees. After Laurel's death, Sometime after Team Arrow A couple years later, Felicity Smoak upgraded the Canary Cry to a sonic bracelet so the device could be worn around one's wrist, instead of their neck.

She was promoted back to series regular for the show's sixth season; reprising her role as Laurel Lance/Black Siren. She also returned as a series regular in the seventh season and as special appearance in the eighth.

The issue was never of her not being able to fight; the problem is if you both put the Lance sisters vs Merlyn or even Damien Darhk - Sara is going to be the one that doesn't just survive but ends up killing them both. The only reason Damien was able to 'beat' Sara was because of his magic, remove that and you'd have a hard time finding enough of him to bury.

In the DC comics, Dinah Drake-Lance is the first person to take on the legacy mantle of Black Canary, a member of the Justice Society of America, and the mother of her successor, Dinah Laurel Lance.
On the show, the character is split into two altogether separate individuals; Dinah Lance, the civilian mother of Sara and Laurel Lance - the White Canary and first Black Canary, respectively - and Dinah Drake, the meta-human second Black Canary.
Dinah's job as a European history professor may be a reference to Alex Kingston's recognizable role as Professor River Song on the British science-fiction show Doctor Who.
Dinah had appeared in every season of Arrow before Season 5.

    Behind the scenes
Like on the show, Dinah Laurel Lance is Black Canary in the original comics. She possesses the meta-human ability of a sonic scream known as the "Canary Cry", which she can deploy to shatter objects and incapacitate her opponents. This did not manifest in Laurel in the show, though Sara and later Laurel each produced a mechanical version of it.
However, Laurel's Earth-2 counterpart does indeed have this ability.
In Season 3, Laurel wore a long blonde wig along with her suit when acting as Black Canary. This is a nod to the comics, in which Dinah Laurel Lance/Black Canary wore the same wig prior to dying her dark hair blonde.
Interestingly, Laurel had already dyed her hair in Season 2, at same time when Sara, the first Canary vigilante, surfaced.
In "Damaged", when Oliver and Laurel go alone to talk, Laurel mentions to Oliver that she wore "horrible" fishnets to a Halloween party they attended together in 2005. This is a reference to Laurel's DC comic book alter-ego's Black Canary costume.
While Laurel didn't have fishnets in her suit, her Earth-2 counterpart does.
In a flashback from "Heir to the Demon", Sara referred to Laurel as "Mrs. Laurel Queen", likely a reference to the comic book Laurel's marriage to Oliver Queen.

    Dinah Laurel Lance (New Earth)
    Black Canary
    Birds of Prey
Dinah was contacted by Oracle (Barbara Gordon) to work in Gotham City, which she accepted, and the pair formed a partnership as the Birds of Prey. Dinah took this role with great satisfaction. And with that came the feeling that she needed a few changes required in this fresh new chapter of her life, deciding to abandon her traditional blond wig and bleach her hair blond whilst growing it longer instead. During her time operating with Oracle, Dinah operated using an electronic form of her Canary Cry: a weapon that would do the 'crying' on Canary's behalf, called Canary Cry Bombs. After a battle with Ra's al Ghul, she took a dip in the Lazarus Pit at Oracle's urging. Doing so healed her injuries and restored her Canary Cry as well as her ability to have a child. As time went on, the Birds expanded their number with Dinah as the backbone of the team, operating alongside notable female agents such as the Huntress, Gypsy, and Lady Blackhawk. Following that, Oracle shows Canary the retail space that later houses a reopened Sherwood Florist.
    JSA
Dinah helps found a new incarnation of her mother's old team, the Justice Society of America, following the death of JSA founding member Wesley Dodds. She serves as a member of both the JSA and the Birds of Prey for a time.
    Quiver
    Main article: Green Arrow: Quiver
A short time later, Dinah resigns from the JSA when she discovers that Oliver Queen has been resurrected. She travels to Star City, where the two former lovers are happily reunited. Their renewed relationship is short-lived however, as Dinah feared that Oliver might try to take advantage of his young female ward, Mia Dearden. Dinah leaves Star City and returns to Gotham City where she continues to function with the Birds of Prey.
    Perfect Pitch
Following the "One Year Later" jump, Dinah trades life experiences with Lady Shiva in hopes of softening the warrior, undertaking a harsh training regimen in an unidentified Vietnamese bidonville, or shantytown. The regimen replicates Shiva's early life and training; Shiva, meanwhile, assumes Dinah's role in Oracle's group and demands that her associates call her the "Jade Canary". When Dinah realizes following Lady Shiva's path will require her to fundamentally change who she is as a person, she ends the training and returns to the United States. She brings with her a little girl, Sin, who also had begun the harsh grooming process to be Lady Shiva's successor and Oliver Queen uses his connections to allow Sin to immigrate into the country. Dinah hopes to balance her duties as a superhero with the responsibilities of being a surrogate mother/sister to the child.
    Raising Sin
Dinah informs Oracle that she is quitting the team, having decided to devote herself to raising Sin.[20] and the two leave Metropolis for Star City; Dinah jokingly tells Sin that she can rip out Ollie's beard if he isn't nice to her.
    Tornado's Path
After leaving the Birds of Prey, Black Canary joins with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Red Arrow on a mission to locate the Red Tornado's body (stolen by T.O. Morrow and Solomon Grundy). The three heroes join forces with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Black Lightning, and Vixen to defeat Amazo.

In October 2018, Dinah Drake gave Dinah Redmond a Canary necklace that looked just like this.
    Alternate reality
In the Dominators' alternate reality, the Canary necklace was given to Laurel Lance as a gift from her fiancé, Oliver Queen. When Sara Lance came to visit Laurel the night before her wedding, she saw and complimented the necklace. Laurel revealed the symbol was a canary, which triggered a flashback of the real world from Sara. Later that night, Dinah “Laurel” wore the necklace at her and Oliver's rehearsal dinner.

    Origin
Dinah Laurel Lance is the daughter of the original Black Canary, Dinah Drake, and police officer Larry Lance. Born a Metahuman, Dinah has the ability of her "Canary Cry". At the age of nineteen, Dinah decided to take on her mother's mantle and began to be trained by Wildcat (who previously worked with her mother). Despite the concerns of her mother, Dinah became the Black Canary and started her own crime-fighting career.
    Creation
    Black Canary
    Black Canary
Dinah Laurel Lance was created by Dick Dillin and Dennis O'Neil. However, much of her design and characterization came from Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino who created her mother, the original Black Canary. Infantino once said about Canary's mother (whom she borrows many attributes from):
"When Kanigher gave me the script, I said, 'How do you want me to draw her?' He said, 'What's your fantasy of a good-looking girl? That's what I want.' Isn't that a great line? So that's what I did. I made her strong in character and sexy in form."
These physical and personal attributes would later be added to Dinah Laurel Lance herself.

    Behind the scenes
Like the DC comics version of Black Canary, Laurel possesses the meta-human ability of a super sonic scream, which she can deploy to shatter objects and incapacitate her opponents. However, she is initially a villain instead of a hero.
    Black Siren dark-haired wig
    Laurel with a dark-haired wig.
During Season 6 while in public, Laurel often wore a short brunette wig as a disguise, which is a nod (or rather a reverse look) to Black Canary of the DC comics; prior to dying her dark hair blonde, Dinah Laurel Lance used to wear a long blonde wig while fighting as Black Canary.
Laurel was shown to wear the blonde wig in a potential future in 2040.
In the DC comics, Dinah Laurel Lance of Earth-Two is originally the second Black Canary after her mother, Dinah Drake. She moved to Earth-1 and joined the Justice League after the super-villain Aquarius killed her father and infected her mother with lethal radiation poisoning. However, since Earth-1 and Earth-2 have merged into the New Earth due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Earth-Two Laurel is now the main version of the Black Canary.
In the DCAU, Black Siren is the alias of Donna Nance, a founding member of the Justice Guild of America in an alternate Earth on the TV series, Justice League although he character herself was actually based on the Golden Age Black Canary.
Laurel has more in common with the Scream Queen, the evil Earth-3 version of Black Canary from the animated movie "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths".
Fans often referred to Laurel as "Siren" to differentiate her from Earth-1 Laurel and Dinah Drake.
She is the second doppelgänger of an Arrow character that has appeared on The Flash, the first one being Floyd Lawton. She was also the first and only doppelgänger on Arrow until the Crisis on Earth-X crossover.
With her being promoted to series regular of the sixth season of Arrow, Laurel is now the only main character who made their debut in The Flash. She is also the first Arrow main character to be a doppelgänger and a meta-human, as well as the fourth villain to be credited as a main character in Arrow.
In stark contrast with her late Earth-1 counterpart, Laurel not only wears fishnets on her suit, but also seems to have a personal liking for them. This is a reference to the DC comic Black Canary's iconic costume.
Unlike her comic counterpart though, Laurel wears fishnets on her arms rather than her legs.
In "Collision Course", it is mentioned that Laurel used the name "Siu Jerk Jai" (approximation of Cantonese "小雀仔") when she took the money from Cayden James's account in Corto Maltese. In the DC comics, this nickname was given to Black Canary by her sensei and it means "little bird".

    Justice League
    Main article: Justice League Origins
Not long after her debut as Black Canary, Dinah Lance became a founding member of the Justice League of America. It was Dinah who suggested the newly-formed name of the League, in deference to her mother's having been a member of the Justice Society of America. It was through her new association with the Justice League that she first met the love of her life-Oliver "Ollie" Queen, also known as the Green Arrow. Black Canary's membership in the JLA lasted for many years. Her friendship with Oliver Queen developed during this time as their feelings for one another became romantic. When Oliver chose to quit the League in order to continue his efforts in Star City on his own, Dinah decided to join him there soon after.

    Dinah Laurel Lance (New Earth)
    Black Canary
    Notes
Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
In Pre-Crisis canon prior to 1983's Justice League of America #220, it was believed that the Black Canary who joined the Justice League of America on Earth-One in 1969 was the same woman who had previously been a member of Earth-Two's Justice Society of America. In that comic, it was revealed that the original Black Canary had died following the events of Justice League of America #74, with her daughter unknowingly taking her place as she had been given the mystically-transferred memories of her mother.

    Legacy
By the year 2166, Vandal Savage became aware of Laurel's death while researching into Sara's life after learning her origin time. After Savage was imprisoned on the Waverider, he taunted Sara by asking, "Have you spoken to your sister Laurel lately?", most likely deducing Sara was from a point in time where she had yet to learn of Laurel's death.
In a possible future where Eobard Thawne comes from, Black Canary is one of the several heroes remembered in the "Age of Heroes"; whether this is refers to Laurel, her Earth-2 counterpart, or her successor, Dinah Drake, is unknown.

    Trivia
    Laurel liked Pinot Noir wine.
Laurel is fond of ice cream (especially rocky road) and black & white milkshakes. She even likes dipping her fries in her milkshakes.
She enjoys sushi, Indian cuisine, and the mushroom & olive pizza from Mario's.
Laurel is mentioned to be a bad cook and is only capable of making macaroni and cheese. This is a trait that her comic book counterpart also shares.
Being the daughter of a police detective, she learned how police badges were serialized.
When she was a little girl, Laurel wanted to be a police officer like her dad.
As a child, Laurel's favorite cake was yellow with chocolate frosting, which her father would buy her every year on her birthday.
Laurel has double piercings in her right ear and triple piercings in her left ear. She also likes wearing ring sets on each hand.
While Laurel formally goes by her middle name, her full name is mentioned when people quote, "Dinah Laurel Lance, always trying to save the world".
Laurel has had two love interests in the series: Oliver Queen and Tommy Merlyn. She was also attracted to Sebastian Blood before learning of his true nature.
Additionally, Carter Bowen, Adam Donner, and Cisco Ramon were hinted to be attracted to her.
Laurel has been kidnapped five times, each of which were individual instances.
In "Betrayal", she was kidnapped by Cyrus Vanch to draw out the out The Hood.
In "Broken Dolls", she was kidnapped by Barton Mathis/The Dollmaker so he could kill her in front of her father.
In "Blind Spot", she was kidnapped by Officer Daily due to her investigation into Sebastian Blood.
In "Unthinkable", she was kidnapped by Slade Wilson to be used as a hostage for Oliver.
In "The Gift", she was kidnapped by Caleb Green in his vendetta against Oliver.
Laurel has been killed in four separate timelines, mostly by Damien Darhk.
First was in an erased timeline in "Legends of Yesterday" when Laurel, along with the other members of Team Arrow and Team Flash, was killed by Vandal Savage. Due to Barry changing the timeline, Laurel was spared from this fate.
Second was an erased timeline mentioned by Rip Hunter in "Legendary" where Laurel, Sara, and Quentin were all killed by Darhk. Due to Rip recruiting Sara, she and Quentin were spared from their fates, though Laurel was not.
Third was in the current timeline, both Pre-Flashpoint and Post-Flashpoint, in "Eleven-Fifty-Nine" where Laurel was murdered by Darhk. This is her final and ultimate fate.
Fourth was in the Legion of Doom's rewritten reality in "Doomworld" where Laurel, along with many members of Team Arrow and Team Flash, was murdered by the Damien Darhk of 1987. The Legends have since restored the timeline to its original state but Laurel's death remains the same.
Interestingly, Laurel saved/helped save the lives of every past/present member of Team Arrow up until her death; she stopped Sara from killing Helena Bertinelli, knocked out one of Danny Brickwell's men who was about to kill Roy Harper from behind, resurrected Sara, helped rescue Ray Palmer from Darhk and later John Diggle, Thea Queen, and Felicity Smoak from his gas chamber, saved her father from the Ghosts, and used the Canary Cry to save Oliver from a bee of Bug-Eyed Bandit.
Laurel is one of the few known vigilantes whose identity is public knowledge, made so posthumously by Oliver to preserve her legacy (though Laurel's identity both as civilian and hero alter ego were later adopted by her living Earth-2 counterpart in an attempt to protect herself from Ricardo Diaz and Dinah Drake). The others are Oliver as The Arrow/Green Arrow, J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter, James Olsen/Guardian, and presumably Jay Garrick/The Flash.
The way in which Laurel discovered Oliver's identity from Slade is similar to the way that Quentin discovered it from Ra's al Ghul.
Laurel shares some similarities with Shado.
    Both were lawyers.
Both had been directly influenced by their fathers in learning how to fight and defend themselves.
Both have been romantically involved with Oliver Queen.

    Post-Flashpoint: Earth-0
    The New 52
    The New 52
After the events of Flashpoint, the DC Universe was reset, Dinah Lance is considered a tough, idealistic fighter who leads the Birds of Prey, composed of Starling, Katana, Poison Ivy and later Batgirl. She is an expert martial artist and possesses the Canary Cry. She is wanted by the authorities for the murder of Kurt Lance, her husband and former partner in the now-disbanded Team 7 who she has reportedly murdered by shattering his skull using her sonic scream, a crime she has admitted to.
While her current adventures are seen in the pages of Birds of Prey, Dinah's past as a government agent recruited by John Lynch is seen in the pages of Team 7. Here, the origins of the Black Canary are retold. John Lynch had recruited Dinah Drake and the rest of Team 7 with intent of creating a team of metahuman weapons against world threats. During recruitment, Dinah had been tested and was found gen-positive, indicating her as one of the few with metagenes. Her sonic power was finally unleashed when her metagene was triggered after Kurt Lance had been shot and injured by Kaizen Gamorra's men. According to Lynch, her sonic scream had been predicted to be alike a sonic bullet, instead what she had unleashed was more like an array of Tomahawk missiles.
Recently Dinah's husband Kurt has been discovered alive and working for Amanda Waller. Canary has only recently come to know of his survival, surprised to have discovered him under the captivity of Regulus.

    Trivia
In an erased timeline, Dinah, presumably along with everyone else in Central City, was killed by Vandal Savage using the Staff of Horus in his efforts to kill Carter Hall and Kendra Saunders. However, due to Barry Allen changing the time continuum, this disaster never occurs.
Until the Crisis of 2019, Dinah was the only member of the Lance family who has not died; Laurel and Quentin Lance died in Seasons 4 and 6, respectively, while Sara Lance died in Season 3, but was resurrected in Season 4.
    Behind the scenes

    Trivia
Cassidy Rodgers is the daughter of David Cassidy. She is also the niece of Patrick Cassidy, who portrayed Leslie Luckabee on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Henry Small on Smallville.
Cassidy was a series regular for the first four seasons of Arrow as Laurel Lance/Black Canary. Although the character died in season 4, Cassidy made guest appearances in season 5 as Laurel Lance and as the Earth-2 doppelgänger Laurel Lance/Black Siren. She returned to Arrow as a series regular for season 6, playing the latter role. This makes her the first cast member of Arrow who has played two different main characters.
Although Cassidy is billed as "special appearance" in season 8, she is still considered to be a series regular
Cassidy married Matthew Rodgers in December 2018. She was credited on-screen as "Katie Cassidy" through the first seven seasons. Starting with the episode "My Name is Emiko Queen", she was credited as "Katie Cassidy Rodgers".
She went to prom with Tyler Hoechlin.

After Laurel's death, the Canary Cry was Upgraded by The Original Canary Carolyn Lance, who modified it to work with her vocal cords and produce deadlier sonic waves. Carolyn began Helping as Black Canary once again and used the Canary Cry in her mission to help Team Arrow stop anyone affiliated with H.I.V.E. in order to Avenge Dinah “Laurel” Lance’s deaths. After Green Arrow talked her out of kidnapping Nora Darhk, Carolyn dropped the Black Canary moniker, and stoped used the Canary Cry
Sometime after Team Arrow, Carolyn Put Away Her Device .
A couple years later, Felicity Smoak upgraded the Canary Cry to a sonic bracelet so the device could be worn around one's wrist, instead of their neck.
    Capabilities
After Carolyn Lance modified the Canary Cry, it produced sonic waves at much higher decibels, becoming powerful enough to override protective earplugs.
Voice recognition: Cisco Ramon designed the Canary Cry to specifically recognize and work with only Laurel's vocal cords. Later, Carolyn tuned the device to operate with her voice as well.

Infinite Crisis and One Year Later
    Lady Shiva and Black Canary
    Lady Shiva and Black Canary
During Infinite Crisis, Alex Luthor reveals that Wonder Woman was originally a founding member of the Justice League. This affects Black Canary's status as founder as depicted in earlier retcons wherein Black Canary replaced Wonder Woman as a founder of the Justice League. In One Year Later after Infinite Crisis, Dinah trades lives with Lady Shiva. Here, Dinah undergoes training similar to Shiva's in her early life. It takes place in a Vietnamese village wherein Dinah is abused by a gang of warriors and learns more about fighting. While training in Vietnam, Lady Shiva substituted Dinah in membership of the Birds of Prey, calling herself the Jade Canary and being prone to excessive violence. Eventually Dinah realizes that the training she is going through would change her morality and decides to end the training, therefore returning to the United States. With her, Canary takes Shiva's young successor, Sin, under her wing and left the Birds to assume a mother/sister role.
    Justice League of America
    Chairwoman of the Justice League
    Chairwoman of the Justice League
Dinah has also been offered a membership to the new Justice League of America, an offer she accepted. Black Canary was selected to be the new chairwoman and field leader due to her strong strategic mind and high emotional I.Q. Later, Dinah and Hal ( Green Lantern) were sent to offer Red Arrow and Red Tornado membership to the newly reformed Justice League. After several unsuccessful missions, Dinah disbanded the Justice League although it would resume with her taking a secondary role.
    Living with Sin
Dinah tells Sin about her relationship with Green Arrow and mentions that Ollie has finally proposed to her, but it's complicated so she hasn't given him an answer yet. While in the bathroom, Sin gets involved in a misunderstanding and destroys the play area. They leave and are confronted by Craig Windrow. He tells her that some people want him dead and begs her to protect him. At first, Dinah declines, but eventually saves him in time. With the help of her ex-husband, she was able to enroll Sin into a safe school and leased a house in Star City.
    Black Canary and Sin
    Black Canary and Sin
The next day at school, Sin is attacked by the League of Assassins. She defeats the ninjas and runs out of the school, where she sees Oliver Queen in a car outside calling her. However, when she gets in the car she is knocked out by a gas arrow, and Oliver reveals himself to really be Merlyn in disguise. Dinah, Green Arrow, and Speedy investigate the crime scene only to find out someone that looked like Green Arrow had kidnapped Sin. Dinah decides to go search for Sin by herself, while Green Arrow and Speedy check out other leads. Dinah heads over to Craig's apartment to discover a bomb attached underneath his car, and him packing ready to leave town. She makes him tell her everything he knew about the people that threatened him. With the help of Oracle, Dinah and Craig set up a trap for Merlyn at his office, while Green Arrow and Speedy rescue Sin.
After Merlyn arrives, Dinah defeats him easily. She then heads to the harbor to help Green Arrow. Speedy was able to rescue Sin and was putting her on the life boat when Green Arrow gets impatient and shoots an arrow at the boat's rope to drop it in the water. However, the boat shatters and Sin is no where to be found. Dinah becomes extremely enraged at what had happened to Sin, and the League of Assassins member only fueled her rage when they blame her for causing them to fail their mission. She then beats the League of Assassins until Merlyn arrives and also blames Dinah for ruining his only chance to rule the world. She attacks Merlyn and nearly kills him until Ollie stops her. Back at home, she throws away Ollie's engagement ring until he comes in and gives Dinah a letter written by Sin. Sin tells Dinah that Ollie thought of a plan to keep the League of Assassins from continuously coming after her.
However, it involved Dinah believing that Sin was killed when in fact, Sin did not fall into the water but hung on the side of the boat with a rope and slipped in through the ship's window. Dinah needed to have a real reaction to make it believable. Speedy took Sin to Connor and he took her to Ollie's former master to hide. After ranting her anger out on Ollie, she tells him that she accepts his proposal, despite him having kidnapped her daughter and telling her that her daughter was dead.

    Equipment
Black Canary suit: After Laurel decided to return to Earth-2, Felicity Smoak gave her Earth-1 Laurel's old Black Canary suit. Laurel wears the protective suit as her alter-ego, Black Canary, to hide her identity from enemies when she goes out fighting crime.[1] After helping Team Arrow defeat Emiko Adachi and the Ninth Circle, Laurel got a new, updated Black Canary suit through unknown means.
Tactical tonfas: Like her late Earth-1 counterpart, Laurel uses a pair of batons similar to the ones used by police officers when acting as Black Canary.
Guns: Laurel has used guns on a number of occasions when not counting on her powers.
Interdimensional extrapolator (possibly): Laurel was somehow able to return to Earth-2; possibly through the use of an interdimensional extrapolator.
    Former equipment
Black Siren suit: Laurel wore a black leather suit while terrorizing her victims as Black Siren. The suit is potentially very durable due to Laurel's survival of a car crash, shock-wave, and gunshot to the stomach. After joining Team Arrow and Oliver Queen's reveal to the world that he was the Green Arrow, Laurel stopped using her suit to avoid breaking the anti-vigilantism law. She briefly used it again while acting as Black Siren, but stopped wearing it for good after deciding to return to Earth-2 as Black Canary.
Knives: As Black Siren, Laurel has used knives in combat against Dinah Drake, multiple security guards, Quentin Lance, and Sara Lance. Knives seemed to be Laurel's weapon of choice as she has been seen to wield them proficiently.
Ghost phone: Laurel used a ghost phone to call Oliver.[7]
Anti-tracking device: Cayden James provided Laurel with a device that prevented Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific from tracking her sonic scream.[16]
Brown wig: Laurel has worn a short dark brunette wig on multiple occasions when in public as a disguise.[4][16][18][21]
    Possible future equipment
Black Canary suit: In a possible future in 2040, Laurel still wears the black leather protective suit of her Earth-1 counterpart as her alter-ego, Black Canary.
Blonde wig: In a possible future in 2040, Laurel started wearing a shoulder-length blonde wig alongside her Black Canary suit when fighting crime.
