In an ideal world it would have been left, as you say, till spring. Unfortunately we will be having livery horses back in the field in the next few months and the owners usually aren't happy if there horses get injured especially if it's from something I've done. Also rolling it down again can also help fracture the area more as it's pushed down again, ideally with a roller on the plough.

Why have you gone over it with your wheel, surly that defeats what you've just done, you'll flatten it in spring when you roll the field
