The secret to mazes is that if you stick to the left wall you will eventually find the exit
Next time you randomly find yourself in a maze, pick a wall and hug it, meaning always make sure a wall is on that side of your body. In this case looks like the right wall was the faster route but the left wall would still get you to the exit.

As a kid Kind of had a similar deal going on with Hunter River on the Lorne Bridge and Ash Island Bridge.
Wasn't so much an official bridge rather that a spikey lantana weed given after jumping off it to climb to shore.
Didn't always have to jump though had to often swim/tread backwards after a storm/good rain to avoid potrentially harmful high speed drift wood.
