At the beginning the didgeridoo is a eucalyptus trunk naturally dug by termites which comes from the Aborigines of Australia. However a didgeridoo is a tube and only a tube! With a dimension between 1 meter 20 and 1 meter 80 on average, any tube will do: from the PVC pipe to the vacuum cleaner pipe (prefer a new vacuum cleaner!) through toilet paper rolls assembled... A tube I tell you, nothing more! Well... of course all these "instruments" will sound more or less good, you can imagine... And it's not a coincidence if some people are specialized in didgeridoo manufacturing : to create a good instrument requires a real know-how. So for the eucalyptus didgeridoo crafters, all the work is to choose the right eucalyptus trunks to make the best possible instrument with the minimum of modifications... So we let nature shape the instrument and our job is to make music with it. Nice perspective, isn't it?
One of the oldest instruments in the world
We do not know the age of the didgeridoo with precision, some announce 40 000 years before J-C others 2000 years... For the Aborigines it is there since the night of times. Beyond these figures, the didgeridoo is unanimously recognized as one of the oldest wind instruments in the world still played today. In spite of the trauma of a violent colonization launched at the beginning of the XIXth century, the Aborigines knew how to preserve and transmit this knowledge. It is thanks to them that we can still listen and play the didgeridoo today. Let's try to remember it...
A musical instrument
Yes but not quite like the others! Indeed the didgeridoo has the particularity to have only one note. So there are didgeridoos in E, in C, in D. So unlike the violin for example, where the musician varies his notes, the didgeridoo player relies on a single drone (a single note) to extract the natural harmonics, which makes it very close to the jew's harp and diphonic singing.
So let's say it out loud: the didgeridoo is a mono-tone instrument... but it has many surprises in store for those who take the time to listen to it.
The body is the instrument
The didgeridoo has no piston, no strings, no holes, no reeds... This simplicity is due to a very simple and obvious reason, so obvious that we don't see it: the didgeridoo is the amplifier, the body is the instrument.
This is the solution and it has great consequences! Because if the body is the instrument, then by extension the didgeridoo becomes as rich and complex as this one. Observe the genius of the Aborigines: to transform the greatest simplicity into the most complex creation. One can only bow down.
In these conditions, it only remains to find the link that will unite the instrument to the amplifier: the lips.
Understand that the player vibrates his lips in the didgeridoo to make it resonate. He will then be able to create all kinds of sounds by working on his lips, his jaw, his cheeks, his tongue, his throat, his vocal cords and finally, the source of all this little world, his diaphragm.
Conclusion: an extraordinary instrument!
From its history, its manufacture and its technique, the didgeridoo is a fascinating instrument with an originality defying any competition! This is what attracted me to it when I started to play. At that time, I was looking to learn an instrument that was different from the ordinary and I was not disappointed!

🙂 Effectivement, c'est un des avantages de l'expériences : les choses ont l'air simples !
Mais avec la pratique, ça fini par venir. Le tout c'est de jouer régulièrement.
