Yes, surely one of the very best versions of this scene. Ms. Meijer portrays Dido as a broken woman. At the same time, her vocal performance is a lesson on "how it's done." I can't say enough about this performance., the spare staging; the burning ring of fire is startling. The chorus and orchestra are "as good as it gets." Bravi to all.
She does, imho, a lovely job singing this! My favorite version of all time is Jessye Norman's! Amazing! But I also love Andreas Scholl's version, too! Alison Moyet...okay, really good but not of the same order as these singers. Henry Purcell has written something that is a gift to singers to this day!
Stunningly beautiful and humble. I feel the same awe when listening to the amazing ANDREY NEMZER singing SAINT FRANCIS PRAYER. Such humility and inspiration!.
I'm aware of all the famous versions of all the greats but as others wrote i too love this one the most, it's very moving and "down to earth" in a sense, Xenia Meijer is wonderful.
Dido stabs herself on top of a pyre of fire but her agony is too much also for the gods...One comes to cut her hair to release her soul from the torment Virgil theatrical, moving, epic rendition paved the way to Christianity and to the Calvary of the Christ
It's a beautiful rendition of the dramatic lament. And the nicest thing is my former high-school class mate Xenia is singing Dido.🙂 I also like the choir's pace in the subsequent "With drooping wings". I have sung that myself too in a choir. But off course far less well.
And though I like better Jessye or Baker's version, good performance. I shall remember this scenery next time I sing this to myself on the street. Great effort and great results.

This is wonderful! I would love to use it in my music lessons at school. Is there a way you could provide a youtube clip without the Spanish subtitles, but with the original Dutch subtitles? I live and teach in the Netherlands. Thank you so much!
Does anyone have any idea what the ring of fire represents in this clip? or how it relates to the plot at all? Or if you know of any other symbols or icons in the clip, for example the sand as an icon for mortality.
This is excellent when it comes to the expression of emotion, however the diction is pretty awful. Maybe it's just the recording's quality, but if I didn't know the words vaguely I'd have no idea what was being sung.
Wiebe de Vries I'm looking for it too! It was shot in 1996 so it's really hard to find. I see there is a video band in a university in Netherlands, and I really wish I could travel there just to view it. Here is a longer version of this act, an 8-minute video: www.eenlevenlangtheater.nl/erik%20vos/video/2747.html
I saw it here: www.worldcat.org/title/dido-and-aeneas-opera/oclc/68948810. It says University of Groningen Library. It would be amazing if you can find it in Netherlands!
Find another version with a singer who doesn't mangle the vowels so badly. I'd suggest Emma Kirkby or Alison Moyet. You stand a fighting chance of understand what they are singing.
This is by far the best performance I've ever seen. Honestly...heart broken.
Then you have no heard Emma Kermes sing this aria
She left it all on the stage!!! This is the best performance of this song ever!!

I've watched this about a million times and I still tear up to it. it's so beautiful.
my meaning with you !!!
Jorre Henderson Same here! Enchanted by this song since December.
I so love this performance by Xenia Meijer, makes me cry every single time. *bow*

She is so beautiful ....a mediterranean arabic beauty. This song is one of the most beautiful laments I've ever heard.
Stunningly beautiful and humble. I feel the same awe when listening to the amazing ANDREY NEMZER singing SAINT FRANCIS PRAYER. Such humility and inspiration!.
i've been looking for a version like this with the flat on "shade" rather than a natural, i prefer it so much more! lovely!
Bravissima.

DIDO AND AENEAS - DIDO'S LAMENT Une pure merveille quelle voix magnifiques et cette musique Eternel merci.
I've listened to this several times but just now watched it to the very end as she fades into the sand. Very cool.
I love the way the production was done. It makes it my favorite version of this. I can see it in Carthage
Oh my God those descending chromatic substitutions after Dido's last words. Chills
That treatment of dissonance was so far beyond Purcell's time
La muerte es ahora una amiga bienvenida. Musica sublime. Gracias por compartir el video
Absolutely one of the most beautiful pieces of music.
Beautiful, magnificent and heart braking, crying ,thank you xxxxxx❤

she stole my heart and she
awakened everything that is humane, inside me.

Unsurpassed elegance.
I want to play classical guitar in the sand in the middle of a circle of fire now.

So much tidier than a messy divorce.
Thank you for that. I laughed outloud!
