    I don't agree that it's about "unwanted" fame, as it is more about getting fame without achieving anything through hard work or talent to deserve it! He certainly wished very much he could make his mark, he certainly wanted to achieve something and get recognition for it, but he had done absolutely none of the actual work he needed to do to fulfil that! He even expected to be credited by another academic who did do the work, who did write and publish a book, whereas he himself had done absolutely nothing towards achieving that dream of his for over 30 years. This is one of the most important points in the film! Even the ending with him trying to fulfil his wife's "rescue" fantasy she'd talked about early in the film (with him wearing the David Byrne suit she had said she found sexy)... him pursuing that fantasy fulfilment only in a dream rather than pursuing real-life achievement parallels his lack of actually "doing" anything yet still craving recognition for achievements he never did anything to earn... this is what I saw throughout the film. It's a real commentary on society.

    Personally i think the movie is nice and interesting, the zebra idea associated with his desire to be popular is so well thought
    Like, his growth is small, yes as it's just about being popular =/= being appreciated
    The idea of someone vs who that person is
    And the ending was so pretty, it was simple yet sincere, that's the thing that stand out the most to me, emotionally, the love shown between the protagonist and his wife was sweet

    It did seem like it was speaking on fame... and the mob mentality that can come with it sometimes. Even referencing it with the ant like hive minds. It seemed like at first everyone saw him in their dreams how they viewed him in real life... Unimportant in ways... and unremarkable.. just there. Then it seemed once the affair thing started... and it sort of tainted that womans view of him and ruining her dream... the rest of the world started to have bad dreams of him. Almost like in real life... One tainted view of a person.. and the mob mentality can pile on sometimes. It just takes one to start.. then the next , then the next person.. and youre all of the sudden looked at in a bad way because of word of mouth. Also seemed to speak on some of the hypocrisies of the world. Like it wasnt ok.. that he was in these peoples dreams... When he wasnt even trying to be. He did nothing wrong... other people dreamed of him... Yet then they wanted to blame him like it was his fault... But it was ok when later.. the rest of the world was infiltrating dreams purposely to spout their crap about merch and stuff. Even with the girl he almost had an affair with.. When he came on to her at first... she like shut it down at the bar... but then forced him later into her fantasy against his will sort of.. and then it was ok. A whole lot to take in and view here as a whole and definitely a lot of stuff left up to the viewer on how to take it.

    The most confusing thing for me was that it doesn't seem to be about anything really, just literally "what would happen if this phenomenon actually occurred"
    I got a strong "metaphor" vibe throughout the whole movie, but it ended up being more of a realistic "what if?" scenario.
    Good video, though, drew some lines for me.

    I just got out of the movies watching it. You're take on, it does make sense, but it still does not make sense on why people are having dreams and then out of nowhere the same people all of the suddenly have nightmares and become paranoid about him and traumatized. Why is the dreams happening? There's no explanation for it. It's like a M night shimelot movie.

    • @SimonsRants
      @SimonsRants  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

      It’s a standard allegory set-up, in my opinion. Like the tortoise and the hare - why are they racing? Because they are. That’s not the point. The point is the message, not the story. The story is just a vehicle for a message. So in this case the bizarre dreams (according to my interpretation) are simply there to be an allegory for the way people think about and treat people in the public eye.

      Things change immediately after he almost cheated on his wife with the assistant. And the older daughter even asked "what did you do?" I think there's a direct correlation to the wife and how she feels about the changes due to the new found fame because of the dreams. Or another take him not being assertive/doing things he's not comfortable with, didn't really demand getting credit on the thesis the author who stole his ida.

    • @a.w.nmusic3827
      @a.w.nmusic3827 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @SimonsRants That makes no sense. That's like saying home alone Kevin wakes up in the morning in the beginning of the movie and no one is at home. Wondering where everyone is at mom dad?? and stays home deals with the robbers and traps All that stuff and then in the end, the parents come home. But they never explain why did he stay behind. Where did the parents go to forget about Kevin It just starts right off the bat with him waking up in the morning and it never explains the reason for the beginning of the movie why he was left alone and they never explained it.

    • @a.w.nmusic3827
      @a.w.nmusic3827 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @OlliWitta3_ Good observation, but that still does not explain why everyone is spontaneously. Dreaming about him then having nightmares about him to ruin his entire life What causes them to dream of him

    • @SimonsRants
      @SimonsRants  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Home alone isn’t an allegory though. When it comes to allegories I doubt you typically ask these kinds of questions. Did it bother you that there was a magic wardrobe that lead to Narnia? Or that the animals could talk to humans in Animal Farm?

    This was an excellent and very well thought out analysis! It helped me process the movie.
    Also worth mentioning is that Paul is into ants, and the hivemind mentality. This relates to humanity's hive-mindedness when it comes to unasked for and unearned fame. Jordan Peterson is mentioned in the movie, and Paul's scenario was much like his journey. And like Peterson, Paul has his fans - the people in France - who appreciate Paul for the very reasons people in the States have turned on him. So, beside the sex appeal, fame will always find an audience.

    One question still tickles my mind.
    Why people of France loved him even when they had the same nightmares? Was that a reference to something I have missed? Or just a random story selection.

    • @SimonsRants

      All I figured was because France is much more into the macabre and the absurd than America is. Europe certainly is much more in general than the US, but France especially. If there is a meaning beyond that, it went over my head lol but I hadn’t really questioned it tbh

      I mean, I don’t know how I genuinely felt about it one way or another but the movie portrays it as bad. So that’s how you’re supposed to take it. They made it seem as everyone took it as cringey. And it kinda was. I don’t know if it wasn’t at all genuine, but it was supposed to come across as out of touch. And I think it did.

    Great to hear your thoughts, I enjoyed your analysis. I liked hearing your perspective on it being about the mistaken sense society has about celebrities based on the idea of the person vs the people who actually know the person and know more of their context. I was thinking it was all his wife's projection somehow but couldn't make sense of it entirely, like she thought he was somebody that didn't do very much and was just around while she dealt with the horrors of life feeling isolated. After they had sex, the girl he met wanted to have sex with him. After that, his wife discovered he was talking to someone she didn't know and she didn't hear him mention, he transformed into a monster in her eyes.

    This reminded me of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial. I couldn't believe how many people wanted her head on a spike, honestly I felt that they're both crazy depressed and should just be around better people and not each other but the people threatening Heard's baby really pissed me off because it bothered me that in the end we're so easily influenced by the media and wrapped around the herd mentality that it seems like we resort to pure animalistic rage and there were people out there who were literally trying to figure out how to kill a child who had done absolutely nothing except be born to a woman who was the most hated in America at that time.
    I'm not taking anyone's side but to me that just seemed like pure madness. It makes them no better than the rapists and murderers who kill for their own sick pleasure yet society was on board with it just because a grown woman pooped on a beloved actor's pillow and cut off part of his finger by accident (pretty sure she meant to cause harm but not sure if she meant to do THAT). Either way it's terrifying how easily swayed we can be.

    I think the deeper theme is about his wife's suspicions about the dreams and how Paul is affected by the new fame. The first scenario of someone (his ex) having dreams about him, raised her suspicions, understandably. Then they joke about people dreaming of him sexually and the wives fantasy of him in the costume saving her. Then when he goes on his trip, she says "you dont have to impress me i love you", thats when he decides to get the drink with the assistant who alluded that she had sex dreams about him. When trying tk help her reproduce the assistants dream he prematurely ejaculates and farts multiple times. Thats when the dreams switch to nightmares and Pauls life goes from overnight sensation to cancelled. It affected his home life as well to the point of Paul splitting up from his family at the wives request.
    At the end he enters her dream and fulfills her initial fantasy in hopes to get his fsmily back together.

    this movie makes SO LITTLE SENSE, it ACTUALLY makes "birdman" seem like it DOES make sense.
    to be clear, "birdman" was AMAZING, but the WAY it tells its story makes it make very little sense, this movie falls into the same traps, only even worse, due to the nature of the plot, MANY things have seemingly no real connection to other things, not to mention the very random time progression, going from almost "real time" in the begining, to skipping over multiple multiple months/years, with no remaks to that whatsoever, and it does it multiple times over, not to mention the fact that none of the "stuff" that made him so hated, even happened, making the reprucussions of said actions seem so out of place its not even funny.....i dont hate this movie, but it makes so little sense, i cant call it a good movie.
    also, his apology wasn't "shitty" it was honest, and truthful, BUT he shouldn't have made it in the first place, he had nothing to apologize for, the fact that he apologized, makes him seem guilty, even though hes innocent. the REAL moral of the story is to not apologize for things that you didn't do.

    I think this whole movie was one complete dream that Paul was having. He even said so in the the one scene where he's sitting on his daughter's bed explaining to her what dreams are. They are basically an extension of your waking thinking, all mixed up. And I noticed throughout the movie the dream jumped back and forth between what he thought was reality and a dream where he never really knew what was going on and what was a dream and what wasn't. Most dreams don't make sense, just like this movie doesn't. So it is a dream throughout the whole movie. Very entertaining though. Wake up!!
