How does someone fall for a scam where you're told you've won a lottery you probably never entered and you have to pay a substantial amount to receive it? I'm not sure I'd be brave as Mariana and go into some of those neighbourhoods asking people about how they are scamming innocent people out of their money. I'm sure she was probably never more than a few feet away from someone with a gun on them. From London, UK.
Older people are more gullible. Based on my experience, some of my older family members really think they won so much money cause it sounds too good to refuse.

This documentry makes investment scams seem so exclusive/hard to fathom. They aren't really all that complicated and if you're from the U.S. like I am, not too hard to come by. Excellent documentry otherwise. I understand there has to be some level of entertaining drama.
A girlfriend of mine from America visited my country like a couple of weeks ago. Me and my other friends (from my country) were talking about scams and stuff like that and she was shocked to find out we don’t really get scam calls anymore because we don’t use landline telefones (except some grandparents but it’s really well protected), however we do get scam sms/texts sometimes.
I hate money scammers with a passion. They make drug dealers seem like upstanding businessmen by comparison, and their inevitable practice of preying on the elderly and the dimmer members of society really makes me angry. They're just the lowest of the low.

I hear ya. When I grew up scams were pretty uncommon. Now you see and hear about it regularly. I honestly treat everything as a scam, unless I am 100% sure. I came close to be scammed selling something on Kijiji years ago. Thank god the bank teller seen the red flags I missed. I’ve been cautious since. Mariana reminds me of what we used to say about Vice news journalist interviewing a terrorist, nerves of steel. Fearless journalism. Love it. I will just say my actual reaction to these scammers is a strange mixed emotion like I both hate what they do and that they're doing it and want them to be punished but also at the same time feel a strange degree of pity after your reporting because this crime is obviously aggravated and agitated by extreme poverty in Jamaica, it doesn't help. If these people had jobs that paid a decent wage and were stable, perhaps they could be convinced that even though it wasn't quite as lucrative, at least you didn't risk being thrown behind bars and everything else for it.

My mom is 82 and lpeople call her ALL THE TIME. I tell her hang up immediately. If is something is important from the Dr or hospital bills Etc. They will call me or send a letter.

Because most Jamaican scammers aren't satisfied with being mere scammers. They start buying guns and forming gangs. Also, they tend to steal each other's hard drives, phones, lead sheets and "clients" which leads to deadly feuding.
The money they have is too much to spend in their countries so after having too much money they now want power hence guns and power play struggles within areas

Because most Jamaican scammers aren't satisfied with being mere scammers. They start buying guns and forming gangs. Also, they tend to steal each other's hard drives, phones, lead sheets and "clients" which leads to deadly feuding.
