World record holder Yiheng Wang is known for how young he is compared to how fast he is, but his mom is slandered and made fun of online because of drama and controversies that has happened over the past couple of months... In this video I'll be talking about the situation and really getting to the bottom of the topic to hopefully make people understand.

As a Chinese cuber who's relatively active in the local Shanghai elite cubing community (the one with coaches and the moms of famous cubers like Ruihang and Yiheng), i actually didn't know much of this incident until this video. Judging from the posts made by Yiheng's mom (cause i can read chinese), things started out as her sorta making a joke and also congratulating ruihang (i believe pretty genuinely) on his PR. but then things quickly escalated and resulted in yiheng's mom along with some other parents in the community making aggressive comments towards ruihang. i don't know much of the context but that's what i can infer from the chinese posts.
i want to state that unfortunately the stereotypes of asian parents is mostly true. i've shared this to some of my friends at worlds but these young asian kids are literally forced to practice a minimum amount of solves every day from their parents. the chinese cubing market is promoting cubing as a way to make kids stop playing video games and instead increase their intelligence and math skills, which is obviously not true, but works very effectively for chinese parents who don't know how to cube and desperately want their kids to be smarter and more competent academically (a common chinese parental mentality). therefore there exists in the chinese cubing community something i don't think exists in any other community in the world: public cubing coaching institutions and "special coaches." i myself went to one of these lessons, and the coach was even slower than me, and much slower than yiheng and ruihang obviously, but that shows how powerful the marketing is. that explains why chinese parents scold their children for not doing well in comp because they cube mainly for intelligence and the will of the parents, instead of actually cubing for fun. unfortunately this is a common reality in today's chinese society.
i personally have wonderful parents that are supportive of my passions of cubing. but i too think that this situation in china is unhealthy and against the message the world's cubing community is trying to send, especially when most of the worlds best cubers are these poor chinese kids

This just proves a theory I've had for a while, which is that prodigies are often misunderstood not only by general society, but by their parents as well. You can see that when Yiheng's mom is scolding him, he is hurt for sure, but he also doesn't see why she's making such a big deal out of his mistake. She can never compare to him.

Interesting video, I really think making more of these videos would help your channel. I think Yiheng is just stressed from competing, he seems to genuinely enjoy cubing as I’ve seen him jumping around with friends, etc, but I think the comp nerves is what makes him seems so serious or sad. He seems frightened that he could get scolded if he does poorly, but of course, there’s no confirmation of what’s happening, so I wont jump to conclusions.
On the first day of YJKL speedcubing, I saw Yiheng's parents literally dragging him out of the venue and he was also crying, I don't exactly know why but he didn't have any events that he's competing in that day but it's unlikely that's the reason. I was also watching Yiheng's 4.69 WR average from a rather close angle (I'm actually in some of the videos of the average and come to think of it, I actually really regret sitting there and I would also like to apologise if I actually ruined the video for everyone) and I did see Yiheng's mom doing those hand postures behind the camera, she is also saying something to Yiheng but I can't exactly hear what she's saying. I was honestly quite shocked when I saw all this and was wondering what's going on with them. Yiheng was also sick during that time since he was wearing one of those fever cooling pads during the comp and from what I heard from my friends, he only gets like 5 hours of sleep but again, I'm not entirely sure on this. Ruihang was also supposed to come to YJKL as his name was on the competitor list but he didn't. It's possible this argument started way earlier (this comp was in March) but we don't the evidence to prove it and it's more likely Ruihang didn't come due to other reasons. Also just to be more clear, I'm not 100% confident on this so don't take my comment as solid evidence.

Thanks for bringing up this issue, it was a really well made video. As a HongKonger, I wanna share more about the Chinese culture here. The stereotype of tiger parents here isn’t completely false - they do exist. But this is not necessarily true for every single Chinese cuber. So I really agree on one of ur point that we shouldn’t come into conclusion when we know so little about Yiheng. Ppl believe they have the full picture from the videos they saw online, which might not be true.
And if unfortunately this tiger parent thing is really true, then shouldn’t we actually support and show empathy to Yiheng? I see ppl give hate to Yiheng becoz of such culture, and I always feel very bad becoz this is like blaming the victim.
I also see occasionally that some ppl are throwing hate words when they talk about how there is a large influx of Chinese kids who have crazily great results after COVID. They claim that these good results are simply a result of tiger parenting. I don’t like this statement at all - this is a pure ignorance towards the hard work the kids put in during COVID lockdown times. Why can’t we appreciate their amazing achievement? This resonates with ur video title - cubing is becoming too competitive rn. Being competitive is a two-sided coin, it leads to more records being broken, pushing beyond limits, yet it sometimes create jealousy as well (in which tbh I did sometime as well and it’s completely normal when ur getting competitive). But then if such jealously got to an excessive level, it would surely not be a good thing in the long run.

One of the big cubing coaches in China, Jaiyu Wang, stated that not most young kids in China aren't forced to cube, but they choose to. And with that said, to truly know whether they are forced to cube, you would have to ask to possibly find out.

Don't know why, but I was at World's 2023 (I am Korean) and I asked my friend Henry where Yiheng was. He said Yiheng was near the Team China table and was apparently getting scolded for his posture while solving. Don't know if this was true, but yeah.
His sadness could also be where the second place effect takes place. The second place effect is where 3rd place and 1st place feel happier than 2nd place through emotional thinking.

This sort of stuff probably happens in cubing or any other sport all the time, but you probably just don't hear about it because it's not happening at high level competitions.
In my soccer team (maybe like 5 years ago or smth) one kid's dad got really pissed off that he didn't score, had a fight with the ref even when the kid clearly didn't score. Except no-one outside our team heard about the incident because we weren't a very good team.
Same deal with chess, I drew to a little kid who is much better than me at a tournament a few weeks ago, and his tiger mum (who had come to a FIVE HOUR TOURNAMENT with him) got very angry at him for not beating me and i saw her pointing to me after the game. My friend's dad used to be a bit like this as well about chess but now that we are 14 he doesn't care as much.
So tiger parents being very competitive on behalf of their kids always happens in any sport/competition (don't argue in the replies about if cubing is a sport it doesn't matter) and it's not just a cubing thing, and I can guarantee there have always been situations like this in speedcubing.
I highly respect both Ruihang and Yiheng for the immense work they put into advancing the cubing comminity and pushing their limits, and the limits of 3x3 in general. But guys, remember, Ruihang is about my age and Yiheng is even smaller than me. These guys don't have to me but under this much pressure, especially poor Yiheng. Being scolded is a normal thing in chinese society, but it's still no excuse to use "sterotypes" to bully a 9 year old kid to get better at cubing.
Edit: As a rough translation of the last paragraph at around 6:48,
She basically complains that she didn't get an apology (not sure who she is referring to), and says some nonsense about how Ruihang's free coaching got him the W. And that Ruihang is only successful today by "eating 100 families' meals" which I assume to be a stab at his supposed privileges.

It’s just sad that all the best Chinese cubers are children. Speedcubers from other countries do it because it’s their dream. I doubt whether Chinese speedcubers are the same.
Very well done video and I think it's good to openly and respectully talk about this topic and not just pretend it doesn't exist. It is on all of us to shape the community the way we want it to be. We don't know what's going on behind close doors but when there are so many stories from people who have witnessed several incidents first hand, there is usually at least a kernel of truth to it. Personally, I can't shake the feeling that his mother is somewhat toxic, but I really hope for Yiheng's sake that it's not as bad as it looks. It's hard enough for someone so young to deal with this enormous pressure, without fear of being scolded. He looks so serious all the time and it broke my heart to see him cry at the GAN event. I wish him all the best for the future.
Since cubing started growing a lot, I got worried because everything that turns mainstream attracts problems like more toxic people. In small communities there's more trust and friendship between members
He is a good kid who stil can't handle emotions well.
This is why sports or competition is good for kids as it simulates the ups and downs of life. Not to blame anyone's parents but i think parents should not push their children to win at all times or instill in them the 'winning is everything' attitude. Teach them to accept defeat, it would be a good learning experience for them later in life

I am a cuber in China and wow these posts are insane. I knew the cubing culture in China was a lot different but I didn't know it had escalated to the point of drama to this degree. It's true that unfortunately as another commenter mentioned many people especially kids who pick up cubing in China are pushed by their parents instead of doing so out of legitimate passion. It's heartbreaking to see Yiheng after achieving such an incredible result be so emotionally distraught because of the pressure placed on him by the parents and coaches...
Not sure if others have seen this but Yiheng cried during the GAN cubing competition in China because of a poor result. In my opinion this signifies that he is way too invested in the results due to the pressure that he faces from others. It seems really unhealthy for him, especially at such a young age to have such high expectations placed upon him. Unfortunately, many Asian moms do have this attitude of dishing out scoldings for lackluster results instead of commending their kids for the effort and the placement that they ended up achieving.
I really hope things can get better for Yiheng, other Chinese cubers, and the cubing community as a whole. Yiheng is a phenomenal cuber and he has so much potential. My biggest fear is the pressure from the community and his parents drives him away from cubing as a hobby.

I went to Worlds. I was making a podium video for my friend Shivam Bansal when I saw Yiheng and his mom on the back side of the stage. Yiheng mom was scolding him. I wasnt sure so I asked my friend ammar and he told me about this incident. I was so shocked to hear about all of these incidents. Woah!

Dang. Yiheng seems like such a nice kid why does he have to go through this? I like being competitive in cubing but not like this.
:( I have a cubing competition in my school and I am usually number 1 or 2 most of the time with sub 30 solves. My mother is so mad at me when I am in second place probably because I think she thinks I have spent too much time on the cube to get 2nd place. Ik all pll and most f2l and Ik 2look oll.

Cubing is becoming too competitive. This is what I feared before. I've seen so many fun communities ruined because people got too competitive. Gaming, cosplay, speech, story-telling, so many fun activities got too competitive and now I can't really see the fun in those activities.
I don't think the entire cubing community is falling apart because of some drama between 4 persons. But if we try to blow up the drama it might lead to destruction in some ways.
Okay as some one who’s familiar with Chinese cultural context, I have to say that there’s limited evidence on whether Yiheng’s mom scolded him after the competition. The hand gesture was more about telling him to “calm down” or “relax” instead of blaming him or being harsh. You would know it if she was criticizing him, it would’ve been a lot more direct. Instead she looked concerned. Different emotions sound completely different when delivered in different languages, when hearing a foreign language it’s common for people to mistake normal greetings to arguments, especially in the case of Chinese language which is full of short valves and spoken at a fast speed. It’s just hard to tell with what we have seen, and I agree with the author that may be we shouldn’t make assumptions based on just “who said what”, at least for now

I think many people can relate that when you're doing something and youre so good at doing it then your parents realize that they make you go to competitions forcefully then you stop doing it because you're probably traumatized that they forced you and you never wanna do it again
i mean look at during monkey league he seemed happy to be solving and over time its gone from that to him crying after losing a competition i wouldnt be surprised if he was being pushed

I believe she’s coaching/scolding him about him relaxing too soon before stopping the clock: it could have been 0.2 faster (guessing) if he’d kept up the solving tension until after his hands went down.
What if the mat was engineered to record time solves instead of the hand plate? Picking up the cube from the mat is little different from lifting hands and then picking up (0.1 or 0.2 quicker times as a result, maybe) but the mat recording when the cube touches down would be more accurate and, crucially, save young kids who relax when they’ve solved the cube in amazingly fast time from angry/frustrated parents. There’s probably a reason it’s not widely used (not dropped cubes cos that’s going to mess up your time anyway) but at top level of comps there should be a way.

I agree cubing is getting more competitive but I’m not sure we can blame the parents for being too harsh. If you look at chess, pretty much all world class chess players started at 5/6 and they genuinely have a passion for chess.

His mom is stressing the poor kid out. This is just a competition to see who’s faster (literally). Not berate the kid into wanting them think about being #1 as his top priority. Just ain’t healthy 🤦
I don't want to try and speculate about people I don't know--like Yiheng's mom--but it's really really hard not to worry about the pressure he's being put under. I know that status is a really big deal in China, and getting WRs is big status. I'm not surprised he'd be put under a lot of pressure, but if that's true, I don't think it's healthy. I think one of two things will happen: either Yiheng is going to go really, really far in cubing, or he's going to flame out really young and end up hating it.
Despite not knowing Yiheng, his mom, or their story, I think It's safe to say that tiger parenting is bad for kids regardless of what culture you grow up in.

I think it's way too early to call all the allegations "misinformation". The only information we have is from Yiheng's mom. I'm not saying the allegations are true, but if his mom was acting abusive and/or toxic, why would we expect her to be truthful?

totally agree we shouldn't jump to harsh conclusions based on stereotypes. Who wouldn't be sad that they lost the World Championships. This isn't some world #100 who missed out, this is the top seed basically! He was expected to win! And he was gonna win! He had an easy time to beat, and messed up, who wouldn't be sad they missed the world champs due to missing an easy solve? And losing by 0.01 s?? That's so hard!!! If it were a large margin, then I'd be like, ok Max you beat me, but this doesn't feel like a real loss, and it's just undescribable the amount of disappointment. Anybody would be sad if they were Yiheng! Any mom/coach would be disappointed if they were Yiheng's. It looks bad on camera, but it's so logically consistent that I can't blame Yiheng or his mom for acting that way after.
you're right..and here in asian countries we don't get grounded or timeouts if we make a mistake..here parents scold us for mistakes but we do not consider it abuse..you did a mistake so you have to take it..but some people even consider scolding as child abuse or something

It's the competitive nature of gaming unfortunately. This happens at every soccer, basketball games, and piano, speech contests. Don't place this on one person to make a viral video out of, let them deal with their competitiveness at their own Accord and don't judge if we can't see the entire picture.

Yiheng’s mom is exactly what I feared. A kid that young cannot be THAT good any anything without their parents playing a role, in this case it could be Yiheng’s mom forcing him to cube. If Cubing is Yiheng’s passion (he’s 9 and probably started at 6-7) then his mom would have no reason to scold him about how he performs. Pretty disgusting and unfortunate.

@@Kalaphant That could be possible, but maybe not. From my perspective, his drive to become better could be partially fueled by true passion, but as well as trying to make his mom happy, not to make her proud, but to avoid disappointment. If that’s the way it is it’s pretty sad to see happen.
