    PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
    1: Hot shoeing (the burning) ensures a good fit and seals the horn tubules.
    2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
    3: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
    4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
    5: Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging, if they get ailments they recover or die, it’s nature.
    6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks
    7: The bit I am nailing to has no nerves and is made of Keratin, the same as your finger nails and hair.
    8: The burning smells just like burning hair.
    9: The piece I fed the dog was a piece of the frog which when fresh is soft and a treat for them.

    What a brilliant video. Having never really worked with animals I'm in admiration of how you work with the horse to get him so accepting of what you are doing. I've had a look over all your videos Gary and that's a brilliant skill set you have there. Always though blacksmithing would have been a good career; I'm sure it is hard work but it must be so rewarding. Thanks for sharing your work Gary.

    I used to do that to a halflinger ! I would clean them up & have her walk & that horse would swing her hoofs all over the place used to lung her then make adjustments to the hoof her back legs would always end up close together so I would adjustments so the legs would be strait we never put shoes on her naked feet 😁

    • @garyhuston

      definitely not something to try out yourself without proper training, you can do untold harm if you don't know what you are doing!

    • @papabull5550
      @papabull5550 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, yes you'd need special training from full time farriers, but I'm just saying that it's a good skill to have even if someone decides not to do it as a job, they can still know how to do it if they need to do it. If they are serious horse riders.

  • @morganthompson5792
    @morganthompson5792 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh my gosh such a satisfying video. I have horses and I love to ride them. I watch them get shooed all the time but I was watching your video and I saw how deep you carved into the hoof. Our ferrier doesn’t go that deep into the hoof. I wasn’t saying that you were doing anything wrong but I was just wondering if that was such a bad thing to do or not? Please enlighten me!
