Happily, Steve rises above the banality of his host and produces a stunning version of My Old Friend the Blues (and Sweet Little 66 is one of my favorites anyway -- played it for my 17 year-old son tonight, who professes to "hate country music", and he smiled!). Terrific interview between songs as well -- despite the half-lame questions, really gives you a sense of the guy's core identity, and why he's the Real Deal. Huge thanks for posting this, (other)unrepentant!
Thank you steve earle for what you have done for this country, what your family represents to freedom, and for throwing yourself out there and sharing your heart, soul, music, you make me laugh, cry, dance, and feel pride in music
i hadn't watched "My Old Friend the Blues," before my last post...have to say that's beautiful, too, one of my all time favorites of his....gorgeous song, gorgeous boy...
love it! maybe not Joy Behar, but the video is incredible and one of my early favorites from this incredible guy!! thanks rich, as always you fine incredible stuff.....
Every performance different than the last. I have found that THIS is the mark of a great performer. The predictability of today's pop music; it's formulated starts/finishes, dry and over-compressed vocals, textbook hooks... all feels so unsatisfying. The age of "low information" music appears to be here to stay. But at least we had Steve Earle and those like him... for awhile, anyway.
My dad gave my mom his CD Copperhead Road upon my conception. I missed him and My Old Friend the Blues used to make me cry every time I heard it when they broke up. All I remember was sitting in the firebird listening to this while he fixed it up until they broke up at 5 years old;(
My old friend the blues...God I love his dimples when he sings...yeah I've got it nad..mi still think he is sexy...but most of all I love his intellect...he is so smart and brilliant...one of the best troubadours of all time...
Embarrassingly, I first heard this one from The Proclaimers on their cult hit album "Sunshine On Leith." The moment the vocals left the speaker, I knew this was written by someone with soul... and hurt.
Steve Earle couldn't outrun his demons, at least back then, many of us have fought the same fight, he's been clean now, but it's an everyday process and always an uphill battle.
man i LOVE Steve then and now!!! i still have my "sweet" lil 96 chevy that STILL has the Ext Zero plates!!! it's missin' an i but next year i'm gonna fix that ;^)
this woman is so obnoxious, but she wasn't able to keep her hands off of him...guess I can't blame her there...he is now, and always has been, the best.
@ajferet I can hear the words floating through my speakers now (to the tune of sweet lil 66) "My Fuckin Old Rebuilt Dodge" "Well she's a fuckin pig on gasoline she burns too much oil, but she was built Ford tough, now it rusts in the soil....My Fuckin Old Rebuilt Dodge"
@tmiller72 I couldn't agree more. I don't know why but I just can't stand the sound of a saxophone in a rock or country song. It just sounds cheesy. I don't expect everyone to agree, but I'm glad you do. Cheers.
@mengle2004 Yes; that is Joy Behar and I don't know why ya'll can't see that they are flirting big time. I betcha something happened after the show :) Steve is beautiful here; healthy and in good voice. It was not long after this at all ('92) that he got very sick from the drugs and if not for prison; he would probably not be with us. Such a blessing; he has so much talent and such a big heart I would hate to have lost him...he is a giving and caring individual and truly awesome musician!!!
sweet little mother is all i need two baby to keep daddy happy and ready go back home brun lips and god nose it right in my to say baby o baby how smile baby it a little kiss or two it good
Exactly; she's talking to a great soul, and one of the finest songwriters on the planet, and she patronizes him like he's a third-grader. WHO IS SHE, anyway??
I can't help but understand why this show wasn't a hit. The guests (steve earle in my mind was awesome) ...but the host blows....view or not. I dunno...just my opinion.
I hear ya. What an insulting, ignorant person. I suspect she thinks she's funny but I have a feeling she's the only one. Steve sounded good though and just brushed her condescending remarks off.
I think he says "It all went reasonably well." Then "'Every 5 years I find another woman that hates me and buy her a house." Not really true though, he certainly couldn't afford to buy a house while he was married to wives 1-3, before he made it with Guitar Town. The other line is "I grew up in a part of San Antonio where some people objected to the length of my hair."
Great video, and yep, Steve's in good voice. I have to disagree with him being 'healthy' though - his eyes look a little 'spaced' to me. Still, his drug problems haven't killed him, and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
I actually think there is some mutual flirtation going on there, not patronization. And from pictureso f wife 3 and 4 (and 6, since wife 6 was a remarriage to wife 3) and the biographies of him I have read, I think she is his type at the time. And while I agree he is a great soul in many ways, he was pretty messed up at this point.
Very rude... and it looked like she picked a piece of hair off his shirt at the beginning. Going back to do some voodoo? (That said, he doesn't seem to mind flirting.)
gotta post again....lowbridge, she is more than annoying....and, yeah, the sax just doesn't do it for me either, brings back bad memories of Bill Clinton, ha!!

Classic early Steve Earle. These songs have gotten me through bad times and good times.
Thank you steve earle for what you have done for this country, what your family represents to freedom, and for throwing yourself out there and sharing your heart, soul, music, you make me laugh, cry, dance, and feel pride in music
Always the best story teller....best troubadour ever
I love listening to him sing and talk❤

Transcends the host so brilliantly...so cool..great soul!
saw him in Montreal last night!!! Awesome. His new stuff may be his best yet. But he sprinkles in a little of the past too! Enjoy the shows.
love it! maybe not Joy Behar, but the video is incredible and one of my early favorites from this incredible guy!!

A one-eyed sax player? Sweet! Where can I get one for my band?
Don't have clue
how many roads RIGHT THERE STEVE!
I want Steve to write a song about a Ford... Also, the Saxophonist with one eye=badass
"That's Joy Behar from The View's iggnorant ass, Steve Rules" the best comment in the history of the internet.
this woman is so obnoxious, but she wasn't able to keep her hands off of him...guess I can't blame her there...he is now, and always has been, the best.
yeah
That's so endearing & not a bad way to be: " every 5 years I get married & buy her a house"...
❤😀🌻
Good Ass song!!!!
Sunday... the song I meant by the way was My Old Friend The Blues, not '66'.
That eye patch came out of nowhere
Adorable doesn’t even start...
Definitely, it's Joy! Haha sought get ol' Steve to come up to Midtown for The View!
Is this the only copy of this song on youtube?
@tmiller72 I couldn't agree more. I don't know why but I just can't stand the sound of a saxophone in a rock or country song. It just sounds cheesy. I don't expect everyone to agree, but I'm glad you do. Cheers.
He dedicated this song to Jeff Healy last night at Massey Hall in Toronto... *sigh*
Isnt that the lady Joy from theVIEW???
@akf2005 -Isnt she Joy from THE VIEW???
Is that Joy Behar from The View? I'd love to see the conversation they'd have today.
@drjh20 That is what I was going to ask. I am pretty sure it is her.
@mengle2004 Yes; that is Joy Behar and I don't know why ya'll can't see that they are flirting big time. I wonder if she kept that hair she picked off his shirt at 3:04. He looked down as if to say, "what the hell?"
Exactly; she's talking to a great soul, and one of the finest songwriters on the planet, and she patronizes him like he's a third-grader. WHO IS SHE, anyway??
JOY BEHAR!!!!!!
thanks unrepentant 42!!!!
This host is Joy Bahar from THE VIEW.
😃
All the sudden a pirate in a suit starts playing the sax...
Arrrrrgh!
I can't help but understand why this show wasn't a hit. The guests (steve earle in my mind was awesome) ...but the host blows....view or not.
I dunno...just my opinion.
Income tax are going and I'm goinga paint it black...I like that.
What the hell is wrong with this woman? The questions?? Sheesh.
I hear ya. What an insulting, ignorant person. I suspect she thinks she's funny but I have a feeling she's the only one. Steve sounded good though and just brushed her condescending remarks off.
Steve rips it up!! ..and o wow that IS Joy Behar!
Great tune ... Steve gets it... That fool interviewing him will NEVER understand
I think he says "It all went reasonably well."

Turn that fucking headless guitar down, bro! Steve is God
Well, you can't blame her for flirting with him... if I'd been her, I would've shut down the show and dragged him back to the green room ; )
@akf2005
i thjink that Joy Behar (The View) is doing just fine
@biterandbladeshow

@ajferet
Not to mention heroin and crack.
😒
yeah, she was kinda gross...not that i could blame her for wanting to grab hold of that boy...but, gee, at least pretend to be calm....
that joy is annoying. never saw a sax with Steve before....
Anyone else think that guy on the electric guitar thing (what is that, it sounds like i need one lmao) looks like an awful tribute act/look-a-like?
Rick Derringer
