In this harmonica lesson Liam Ward teaches you to play the harmonica intro to The Pogues' version of Dirty Old Town on D diatonic harmonica. This song was originally written by Ewan MacColl about Salford. This is a great song for beginners, with no bends but plenty of opportunity to practise moving around the instrument. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

You're welcome!
Thanks for this Liam. My gf loves The Pogues so this should earn me some points.
Nice one Kerry :)
Hi Liam. Many thanks for this. I’ve been playing the song for a while now in my banjo set with my double bass guy. It has eluded me totally and I was just whistling it which worked fine but doesn’t cut it like the harp. Great job matey. I’ve even used the two draw instead of the 3 blow to get some bending in there🤘🎶ta you legend
Glad to help!
Thanks Best Harmonica Breakdown I've Found 👍
You're very welcome Michael! Cheers. Liam
You're right that it's not Irish in the strict sense, but it is old, way older than any one person and Salford and Liverpool was full of working class Irishmen, e.g Dockers, factory workers, gas yard workers, etc. Sure it comes from the anglo Irish community. My grandad, a lancastrian through and through, would sing it at the lancastrian club in Blantyre Malawi in the 1950s. Any great lesson, thanks man.
The song isn’t that old, well not compared to something like 🎶 The Wearing of the Green 🎶 which is 200+ years old.
Ewan MacColl wrote it in 1949 and it’s specifically about Salford,Greater Manchester! Here’s what music historians say about it
The original lyric written by MacColl contained the line, "smelled the smoke on the Salford Wind." This displeased the Salford council to the point where they pressured MacColl to change it to "smelled the spring on the smoky wind." In subsequent recordings of the song, however, artists chose to remain faithful to the original words, in part because many of them were familiar with Salford and knew the song to be a realistic portrait of the town.
This is great and simple instructions! Love the Pogues and always wanted to learn. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I love this song
Me too! :)
see you in Edinburgh, I am a beginner and will know this by the time I arrive, thanks
Great, see you there Jim :)
Hi Liam, to complicate things further, the key changes again to “C” when the pipes and fiddles come in for their solo ! You would need your bandolier of harps for this one. Great tutorial, great song ! ( I still say it’s Irish)
Yep, didn't want to confuse everyone about the keys! I'll claim the song for Salford forever haha
hello, one of my first songs I learned, I play it in C great stuff Liam
Haha!,,,,,snap!....same here....yeah same notes sound fine on a C as well!....great Liam!
You're welcome Christopher :)
No worries Ian :)
Thank you Sir!
Thank you very much for what you are doing! Your lessons really help me in playing harmonica! Have you thought about making a lesson with The Smiths "Asleep"? Or with the other songs of The Smiths?
Ooo, good idea. I love the Smiths :)
Great job
Thanks for that. Greetz from germany 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, Dominik :)
First thing I played on ANY instrument that sounded like it should
Awesome, well done Melvyn!

No problem, glad I could help!
This is great thanks! God Irish songs are sooo good
Thanks! It was actually written about Salford (in England) but played by so many Irish bands that it's become a standard :) Cheers. Liam
Sounds also good on a C Harmonika
No i meant the original The Office Theme song (the one plays when the show starts) i want to learn it for months! Please make a video for that, i promise it is short and wont take your time. Please Liam i am really desperate in here.
Hi ,really enjoyed you lesson,I've been trying to learn dirty old town, and this has helped my aim is to play along on my guitar ,I've learnt the guitar in the key of g or should I change guitar key ,thanks look forward to progressing with your teaching tia
never touched the salvation army op-shop harmonica I've had for years till today and I nailed it.thanks.dunno even what key it is.didnt know there were different harmonicas.heaps easier than reading guitar tabs or sheet music.
Glad you found it useful, thanks for watching! 😎
Subbed! Simply beautifull m8! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thanks, welcome to the club! Happy new year from England :)
I play this to all my family and friends and they sing the Virgil Van Dijk song to it. Then I play it on my clarinet to encourage more singing.
As a United fan I can't condone such behaviour! But I'll let you off because you play harmonica.
i too am trying to engage in such behaviour... however can't help but notic that line C is sung differently among the anfield faithful.... Trying to work it out currently, but though I'd get in touch see if there was any chance you'd be able to write it out for me? Cheers, and thx for the vid. YNWA
Hello Liam! I am big fan. I was wondering could you possibly teach us how to play ''The Office Theme Song'' please i really want to play this song, i know the tabs but i just couldn't make it. I am pretty sure there is more office fan who wants to play it and it is very short. Please i literally am begging you for that one
Thanks :) Do you mean 'Handbags and Gladrags'? Cheers, Liam
he probably meant this one: th-cam.com/video/b9GilKnpiv0/w-d-xo.html
Amazing
Thanks!
Hello sir, Once again great video. i am now easily able to adapt the notes as i following your lessons since 6 months i wish that it would be more better if you add shuffle and rythem in all of your song tutorial because i want to move on to that next. i can do different shuffle and rythem independently but not with playing song i don't know why ?
may be by watching you i can understand the reason and improve that by imitating you. thanks.
You're welcome, thanks for watching. Not all songs have or need a shuffle. Did you watch my lesson on how to play a blues shuffle? th-cam.com/video/fu2Rsl7l9cs/w-d-xo.html
yes i did watch it. in that song due to you play it with shuffle i am able to play it. but other i am trying to add some rhythm and shuffle than it all goes off note. and the main note is sound lower than other notes. song become noisy. so that is why i did request for that.
any tips for which kind of songs will be good with shuffle and rhythm and which kind of songs will good as flat notes?
Go the Red Devils
merci
Vous êtes les bienvenus :)
Sorry to bother you, I know this is an old video. Im trying to learn to play and sing this song. Im a beginner and nailed the intro, but theres more harmonica in the rest of the song. Could you possible have a tab for those notes? Or at least tell me which key it is? Thank you so much brother
Got it! Thanks 😎
No problem 👍
fantasticooo...wonderful
Very good!
Thank you :)
Can you play more and more by webb pierce.
Hiya, I'll check it out and see if it's a good idea :)
Hi Liam , Great tutorial once again, Could you please do a video of Fishermen blues on the Harmonica? There is a duo on TH-cam called the Brewer boys and they do a fabulous cover of Fishermen blues and substitute the harmonica for the fiddle. Cheers Chris
Nice one Chris, I love the Waterboys so will definitely try to give this is a go :) Cheers. Liam
@@Learntheharmonica brilliant Liam, Thank you, Chris
Nice
Thanks Tony :)
Our ukulele group plays this song in the key of C. If I wanted to to play the intro, what key harmonica would I play? Is this tab considered first or second position? If second position it would be an F harp. C in the first position. Thanks!
The tab is 1st position. Good luck with the group!
@@Learntheharmonica Thanks!
I have problems getting the holes right
Any gerry cinnamon songs please
sounds very similar to American western tune, oh bury me on the lone prairie, a very old tune, jim
Oh, I don't know this - can you put a link up so I can hear it? Cheers, Liam
Well that wouldn't be surprising as loads of American people were Irish at some point hahaha
hey! your lessons are great thank you so much. Could I request Hey Hey My My video for harmonica? Would really love to learn how to play that one thank you
Great song! Will add this to my list :) Thanks for watching! Cheers, Liam
Can you follow this on a c harmonica ?
Yes, you can use any key of harmonica - you'll just be playing in a different key from me.
A silly question but can u just play the same notes on a g harmonica if my guitar is in g cheers
Hi Thomas, yes that's correct so go ahead :)
Can you play this tune of a C Harmonica aswell?
Hi Liam (great name...), yes you can use any key you like :) Cheers! Liam
Salford! Damn, I never knew that.
Now you do! :)
Salford Red Devil’s sing it after every match win or lose! Always on the booze!
i have 16 holes in my harmonica how i do it pleas ?
Hi Sif, unfortunately I only do lessons for diatonic harmonica - get yourself a 10 hole! Cheers, Liam
Don't I remember the song to have a bit of a tremolo?
Hi stvia, yes he does put some hand tremolo in :)
Pogues did a cover off this irish traditional song.
Hi Tony, it’s not actually a traditional Irish song - it was written by Ewan MacColl about Salford. Either way, it’s a beautiful song!
seriously, who choses the pogues, a punk rock bands version, over the original by ewan mcoll?
Hi Derek, I chose this version because it had harmonica in it and a lot of people know this version. Sadly not everyone goes to the source. A lot of people even believe it's an Irish song and aren't aware that it's about Salford! Cheers. Liam
Very helpful to try as a beginner.
Great song as well about Salford, steel works and life.
