This episode is just another reason to love the intellect of Jeff Smith. Missed greatly.

Did everyone hear what Jeff said, at 1:00? _"There were black citizens in this culture, long before the slave trade occurred."_ This is what we blacks have been trying to tell people for decades! Not all blacks are the descendants of slaves, and not all whites are the descendants of slave owners. Anyway, enjoy those chitterlings!

I vaguely remember watching this show when I was a kid, but I don't remember it being barely restrained chaos. 🤣

I grew up with my grandma and mom always throwing a few okra pods in with the purple hull peas while they were cooking. That’s good. Wish I could share that tip with Mr. Jeff Smith.

I have the companion cookbook for this series on American Cooking from "The Frugal Gourmet" Jeff Smith. And the chapter on Soul Food Cooking interested me. I also found the chapter on The Filipino Immigrants in "The Frugal Gourmet on our Immigrant Ancestors", as well as the episode to be fascinating too.

I like mustard greens...in the Caribbean they eat callaloo, which is a very delicious spinach-like plant that they add red and green bell peppers, habinero peppers and onions.

This would have been considered very progressive 35 years ago. All in all, it was an informative episode that in no way should be considered offensive- even today.

Why are you cringing? Would you cringe if he were cooking Chinese or Mexican food?

KPopBreakdown what a strange comment. Nothing cringe about it. Straight forward cooking information with a cultural historical context .

Cringe for what?? He's celebrating African soul food cooking and not too many people would have had the balls to do that in the 80's unless they were black themselves. And you can't really show me too many if any black chefs on t.v. in the 80's. His information is accurate and he does a great job of explaining everything.
