- California travel expert Veronica Hill offers her Hotel Del Coronado review and tour in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
This beautiful San Diego resort -- known as the Grand Lady by the Sea -- is one of the most historic California hotels.
Built in 1887 along sandy shores of Coronado Beach, this 28-acre Queen Anne Revival Victorian Resort was one of the most elegant and modern resorts of its time - boasting telephones, electric lights, and a birdcage elevator that's still in operation.
With its red turreted roofs, white clapboard design and magical spires, the Hotel Del looks a lot like Emerald City. In fact, Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum lived at the resort as he wrote the Oz series between 1904 and 1910.
Today, this legendary resort (where Marilyn Monroe filmed Some Like It Hot), is a bit of California paradise, complete with two fine dining restaurants, an on-site ice cream store, and oceanfront pool. For an added fee, you can even rent your own private cabana.
I loved the lobby library, where you can cozy up with an old book, and the downstairs museum, where I learned more about the history of the Hotel del Coronado and its reputation as one of California's haunted hotels.
Room 3312, recently renamed 3327, is supposed to be haunted by the ghost of Kate Morgan. Room 3502 is also said to have spirits.
In 2008, Coronado Beach was named one of the Top 10 beaches in America. That same year, the Hotel del Coronado celebrated 120 years with more than $150 million in improvements, including a cluster of luxury oceanfront villas at Beach Village. Some even come with their own private swimming pools.
San Diego weather averages about 65 degrees in January to 77 in August, making it about the closest thing to perfect in America.
And true to the dream of its builders Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story, it still is the "talk of the Western World."

You were not rude at all. I love learning new things about places I've been, and you're helping the viewers by giving them more information! Thanks again! Veronica
I live in the condos right next to this place. I go here all the time! Right on the beach. It's wonderful!
We were there for my wife's 82nd birthday. Will return next month for our 62nd Anniversary.
@CoronadoCoastalLivin Thank you so much! That really means a lot of us. We work hard on the videos and I'm so glad you enjoy them. Cheers, Veronica
It is a bit pricey, but they do offer specials from time to time. A nice compromise would be to have lunch there, then tour the grounds. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for your comment! Sounds like you have a pretty sweet timeshare! Take care, Veronica
Interesting bit of trivia! Thanks for commenting. Cheers, Veronica
I agree. Thanks so much for commenting! Veronica
I worked there in 1970 as a Chef apperentes in the main kitchen for the Crown Room, and
later on in the Prince of Walles kitchen.I was the only gringo in the kitchen. But I loved working
there.A lot of wonderful memories.
Yes, Marilyn Monroe spent about a week of filming "Some Like it Hot" at the Hotel Del during September of 1958. Her husband at the time, Arthur Miller, accompanied her during filming. During her stay, the hotel reports that Marilyn was a big fan of the cold soufflé vanilla pudding with egg-white decoration.
Thank you for your comment! It really is one of my favorites in California.
Gracias a Dios ,tuve el placer de estar de visita en este bello hotel y sus playas. en 1995,. Algo para nunca olvidar.
Thank you! I actually use a wireless Sennheiser microphone when filming each video intro. The mike was a bit "off" that day in Coronado, but we have it dialed in now! Thanks again!
Hi there! Yes, it is expensive, but fun if even for one night. You do get a spooky feeling in some parts of the hotel. Check their Web site for specials throughout the year. I'm thinking now is probably a cheaper time to visit. Thanks again for commenting! Happy new year to you as well! Veronica
That's a cool picture of the elevator at 2:30. I ride that thing every time I visit the hotel. As far as I know, I think it is the oldest public elevator in use in the US today.
Wow, that is fascinating! Thanks for sharing your experience! Veronica
How wonderful! What a great place to live!!
No! But I did have a creepy feeling walking down some of the hallways. Apparently there is a long waiting list to stay in the haunted room!
Sounds spooky! Thanks for sharing your experience! Cheers, Veronica
Thank you so much! That is interesting information about the elevator! It sure is fun to ride.
Wow, that's amazing!
Cool! I'm going to have to check that out next Christmas! Happy New Year to you as well! Veronica
How fun! Congratulations!
Wow! You are very fortunate. Coronado is awesome!
People were ice skating? How cool. Where do they set that up? Thanks for commenting! Veronica
Sounds like a great trip! I'm ready for a jaunt to Germany. I love Heidelberg and Rothenberg!
You will love it. It's a beautiful hotel and one of the last grand resorts on the beach.
You forgot to mention that Richard Matheson, author of "I Am Legend", not only stayed at the Corondao, but he also had the hotel as the setting for his time travel/romance story, "Bid Time Return" (which served as the basis for the 1980 Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour movie "Somewhere in Time", which was not filmed at the Coronado, but at the Grand Hotel).
My friend and i went in there when we were on a ghost tour and found room 3327. As soon as we turned the corner the temperature instantly dropped. And as we stood outside the door there was a tapping from the other side. it was incredible.
@HannahWil123 Sounds like you had a great time (except for the sunburn!) Thanks for commenting on the video. Do you have any fun tips you'd like to share about the resort?
Interesting. Thanks for sharing! Veronica
Yes, California's ocean isn't that warm until about September.... It's the only time of year I go in the water LOL!
@ApachenMe Yes you can. Your best bet is to call the hotel's wedding planner for details. Prices can vary widely.
Sounds wonderful! I'll have to try it next time I'm down there. :) Veronica
Sounds like fun!
You're welcome. I apologize if I came off at all rude. I'm a Richard Matheson fan, and am actually reading "Somewhere in Time" right now (and I also have the DVD in my collection). I just felt it was one of the small details to share about such a beautiful place as the Coronado. I haven't stayed there myself, but reading the book and looking at videos like this one makes me want to spend a week there. Keep up the excellent work. :D
i would LOVE to visit there and stay the night. i looked it up and it is expensive. someday i will. i wanna explore and learn more about the ghosts there. im really into that sort of thing. hope your new year is going well. great video!

yeah it is a very nice hotel - Ronald Reagan stayed there for a while holding a confrence - it is the largest wooden hotel in America ( possibly the world ) - i really enjoyed it!
@fish67y We use Final Cut. Thanks for the kind review! :) Veronica
When your talking to the camera your voice must be pretty loud. I cannot get my voice to be heard well on the camera.
This is really inspiring, I want to do the same kinda thing. And I LOVE the Del Coronado! I actually did learn little details I didn't know before :)
You can always check out, but you can never leave... :)
I bet You're Already Gone
How much does it cost to stay there? looks grand, would love to stay there one day
im doing my intern there an not only is it a fantastic hotel but is also a great place to work.
Cool! Did you notice anything unusual?
Ooh, is that a type of microphone you put a fair distance away from you, but picks your voice up well? Or one with a small "phone" near your your mouth and hardly noticable on you? Thanks for the info!
Opps. I meant to say the picture of the elevator was at 0:42 and not 2:30. But anyway, great video of that historic elevator.
