This song was written by the Reverend Cleavant Derricks in the 1940’s, a Baptist pastor from Tennessee, and it gained popularity in the Southern Gospel world when it was recorded by the Inspirations Quartet in 1975 (and live on their “Nite of Inspiration” recording in 1976), featuring their very popular bass singer, Mike Holcomb, who stayed with the group over 40 years. Also in 1976, on their other live album that same year, the Inspirations recorded yet another Cleavant Derricks’ song, “When He Blessed my Soul.”
Derricks was black, and the amazing thing about his music is how it still transcends so many musical genres, from Alison Krauss to the Gaither Vocal Band to the Inspirations, and then of course to the “new” Inspirations, with the young bass-singing Wyatt Austin continuing their amazing southern gospel legacy.
But I think it is the power of the lyrics of this song that makes it powerful. Do you also know that “God took His pen of Love” and wrote the Gospel personally in your heart? Is it real enough to make you “laugh” and “cry” and to set your “soul on fire”?
If anyone is not familiar with Cleavant Derricks, maybe you’ve heard of another one of his songs, “Just A Little Talk With Jesus”?
