Sorastro, have you ever tried mixing in a little of a complementary color into the deepest shadows? If so, how did it go? Many painters did this back in the day. So adding red to shadows on a green object for example. If anyone could pull it off on a miniature it’s you. Love your work! 😁
Thanks a lot! Yes, I sometimes use "complimentary contrast" to create interest, although usually in quite subtle ways. You'll notice that for Thanos' armour for example I use some purple in the shadows to compliment the largely yellowish tone of the mid tones and highlights.. 🙂
I struggle when highlighting up areas that have panel lines running through it. I previously spent time darkening those lines, so when I highlight around the line it doesn't look like a natural highlight. But when I highlight over the panel lines, I get rid of the shading I created with it.
Awesome job! I've been in the mood to paint some dedicated NMM again, but nothing I'm working on calls for it. =( I'm a big fan of playing with light reflection patterns and sketching in my light plan to build up from, so this resonates with me. Keep 'em coming!

Well, I kind of show the process in the video; for the more blended areas (the blue outfit basically) it's really about lightening the tone gradually then highlighting up covering ever-decreasing areas. Sometimes if I notice a harsh transition I might brush a thinned intermediate tone over the border to soften things out, or brush the highlight tone thinned down over the border into the direction of the highlight - once again just to smooth things out. :)
I'm picking up the core set soon and wondering if the army painter/ citadel paint starter set and regiment brush would be enough of if I should get separate paints?

Thanks Kevin! I used to paint Warhammer (Fantasy Battle, and 40K when it first launched 33 years ago!) but I'm just not drawn to it these days, and I only paint figures from games that I'm actually excited about playing. :)
Well, I painted as a kid quite a bit - mostly Warhammer FB then 40k (so around 35 years ago). Then shifted to 2D art at college, and returned to mini painting around 10 years ago. 🙂

Hi! I think the quality of the MCP minis is outstanding. They're made with a nice hard plastic with lots of detail, and I've found the mold lines to be mostly quite minimal. Some of the models do come with some very tiny parts which irks some people, but I'm ok with really. 🙂

Can you explain what zenithol priming does for the mini? I've been doing it for a lot of my recent works, and I haven't noticed too drastic of a difference. Is it just so we can take a picture and check it for highlights>
Hi! I personally like to apply zenithal highlights partly - yes - to get a nice tonal "map" to refer to, but it also makes it much easier to achieve bright base tones whilst retaining naturally-dark recesses and areas of shadow (such as the eye area for example in this case). You could certainly achieve a nice paint job without the zenithal highlights; I just find they make it a bit easier to get there. 🙂

Hey! Sure - I'd just stick the gauntlet/head to the end of a pencil with a bit of white tack/poster putty which can also cover the magnet. 🙂

Ha ha - thanks a lot Aleksandar! There are so many MCP minis that I'm dying to cover; I'm just taking a short break from them to allow me to tend to some of my other series (LOTR, SW Legion, and KDM), but will be back with more as soon as I can.
