  • Chip technology for credit cards is here…and gaining momentum. Chip cards-also known as Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV)-are similar to current credit and debit cards. But in addition to a magnetic strip, the card features a small computer chip, adding an extra layer of security.

    To have a truly secure chip card the banks would need to remove the old mag stripe and NOT print the card number and expiration on the card !

    • @charlieangkor8649
      @charlieangkor8649 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I ground out the skimming enabling magstripe with a sandpaper and now an ATM will not open the door in the slot to let me insert the card. So the banks protect the fraudsters by preventing the customers from making the horribly insecure card more secure.

    Wait, did I hear that right? So if a person has their credit card hacked it's the bank that pays for it with EMV type cards?

    • @TheMatthewDMerrill
      @TheMatthewDMerrill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Say if Mcdonalds still has the swipe, they have to pay for that fraud. If they have the new chip, the bank has to pay.

    so why does the financial institution or merchant responsible for fraud? Is this a new policy or is it for more complex reasons?

    • @mreloncam
      @mreloncam 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      because the financial institution promises the card can never be "fraud". EMV's promises to have "one of a kind" codes that can never be repeated again. if it was repeated, then financial institution is liable for that.

    Emv are in most cards? Or rfid

    • @mountainamericacu
      @mountainamericacu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      EMV chips are in almost every card these days to increase security. They have to be inserted into a card reader in order to function. RFID is a separate technology which enables touchless payment on enabled point of sale processing systems. You simply have to hold your card up to the card reader and it will process. Most of the cards we off utilize both technologies. We hope this helps!

    It makes it nearly impossible because you transfer the liability to the merchant and not the person that robbed people's money.

    To bad the magnetic strip can still be picked up by scanning apps and false front card skimmers placed on atms/gas pumps/etc., your pin can be picked up by a small camera placed on an atm or pinpad. Hell they don't even need that false card to make payments online. Just the digits on the card. Ain't life grand we are all just waiting to be stolen from.

      +Harpist Los Angeles Of course you can opt out! Nobody is forcing you to have a credit or debit card. But for us who actually care about security we are glad that this technology is finally being adopted in the US.

    You explained almost zero about the chip technology and more about credit card use. I wanted to hear, how is it possible that a tiny metal piece tramsmits data.... This video title is misleading

    • @mountainamericacu
      @mountainamericacu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Nascar F! We're sorry that you were disappointed with our video. The intention of the video was to explain how EMV technology is different, and more secure, than standard credit cards magnetic strips and how the technology functions in general.

    MARKER SOUND IS A KIND OF IRRITATION.

  • @TheMatthewDMerrill
    @TheMatthewDMerrill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The chips are not safe. A hacker can use a cheap card reader, put it right next to you with your card in your pocket. The hacker now has the numbers to your card and can use it online. The card also still has the swipe, so it is still able to be swiped somewhere and have the cards info.

    • @Metarkice
      @Metarkice 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're mistaking EMV and NFC/RFID - two very different things.
      And the thing "hackers can read number through your pocket" was maybe true 5 years ago, but it have been fixed since and card from that age are now outdated and unusable.

    No I would refuse the card full stop I am UK and I point blank refused my contatless card. People swipe them on public transport and other public areas. Though you may not be responsible for fraud. How long are u waiting for your money back. How long will it take to hack? Need I go on? In my eyes banks love fraud because they're taking sercurity away from cards. All you get oh it's secure until it gets hacked as always.
