It's good that you prepared and studied this and built your own enterprising rendition before being influenced by Gilels. I did this when learning Schumann's opus 22 sonata. I didn't listen to any recordings until after I let the notes of Schumann's music guide me into my own personal expression of it. That's one reason we have so many recordings of a certain piece of music.

I took up the piano two and a half years ago when I retired. I play four to five hours a day, trying to master it. This keeps me active during my retirement and a bit frustrated, but that’s to be expected.
