Who would accuse MeatCranium of doing a fluffy review? Those instructions though...one wrong move and you've got a hole in the wrong spot on the kettle.

I’ve come to expect dreadful instructions that accompany products we purchase. So I appreciate it when instructions are complete, clear and concise.
One wonders why, if (some) manufacturers can engineer a product that works well, why they can’t draft a useful installation/information guide.
I suspect you probably revisited your first installation to reverse the retainer ring you installed upside down. I’d have lost sleep had I not done that when I realized how well the second one went.
Your TH-cam clip has somewhat prepped me for the arrival of my Flame Boss 400, which I will install on a Weber Smokey Mountain and a Weber Kettle. The ‘set it and forget it’ aspect of that Flame Boss appeals to me. Especially here in Toronto, where I BBQ and smoke 12 months of the year. It’s a challenge to maintain pit temperatures over long cooks when you’ve got 4 seasons of unpredictability. There’s never a dull moment.
    Best Wishes from Canada.

No one could ever say your reviews are info commercials. You always do the Good, the Bad and the Really Ugly. I am going to be doing a review with another Temp Control product starting next week. The way you drilled the hole was very informative and will have to do the same modification so I promise to give you credit in my video.

Love mine use it all the time! Little bit of a tip if you are trying to keep low temps like 200 to 225 damper the square like 3/4s of the way with tinfoil that way you can keep the top vent open more for better draft.
The variable fan is a huge plus for me.

  • @stephenmcgowan8572

I am considering several temp controllers and most if not all are not water sealed or even water resistant. I have blown several wireless transmitters going to bed with a brisket on and waking up 5 hours later and its sprinkling outside. Why cant they include a heat resistant shield that is splash proof to prevent that? The fan could still draw air from under the housing. Overall a great review with important info. Your stick burner hack with the foil over the grates works wonders and saved me tons instead of getting the heat management plates. Love the MeatCranium!

I picked up the egg genius rebranded flame boss 400 this weekend used on a cook sat and sunday. instructions are horrible.
the only thing I would add to your video from my experience was to plug in the unit, download app and sync to your phone and walk away for 45 min or so to let the unit update to latest software. I mine kept going off line until I got the notice on the update then it work flawless for two cooks. automatic updates are nice. good video!

Hey, if you use that galvanized pipe cap just for keeping bugs out, that's great but be careful if you cook with the cap on (ie; when not using the flame boss). I've read that heating up galvanized steel will release toxic fumes. Do a search on "Galvanized steel BBQ" and decide for yourself.

Wow I didnt realize the video was this old. Do You Have any Current favorite Temp Control Kits? The Flame Boss 400 is $219.00. on the Amazon right now. Not super inexpensive but not stupid ridiculous expensive either. I have seen nice setups like this without the wifi for under $130.00 I just don't know if I need Wi Fi alarms I could use bluetooth tho. That "Nut" is a electrical conduit locking Nut and you put it on so that it is like a bowl upside down. It has Teeth that are designed to bite into the metal surface and keep it from loosening. The way Meat Cranium installed it here is correct ! 3/4" National Pipe thread (water pipe ) is the thread on this thing and he is also correct use a 1" Drill. National Pipe Thread (NPT) or water pipe is always measured and is called 1/4" smaller than what the measurement is. 1/2" National Pipe is actually 3/4" when measured for example. The page that shows the "UNIVERSAL INSTALL" is for a 3/4" (NPT) pipe thread Gate Valve like many of the heavy Cabinet and Offset smokers use. Hope that helps clear that part up. ALWAYS USE BLACK IRON PIPE FITTINGS WHEN DEALING WITH FLAMES FWIW GALVANIZED PUTS OFF POISONOUS GASSES UNDER FLAMES. Those Directions were clearly lacking like showing where the reset button is and how long to hold it in and when. and the other things he covered here. I am looking for one for my Kingsford Pro 36" Offset smoker but it needs to attach to the round damper vents on the door on its giant firebox. I wonder how large that stainless dog dish adapter is? it looks about 6" That would be my only hope or else I could go buy a larger one. That black iron pipe cap is less than 1.00 wholesale Anywhere. Thanks for the great review. New Sub!

Nice review MC. Flame Boss should reimburse you for the second unit or at least send you some more bubble wrap. Small investment for R&D they should have done instead of you. My guess is that somehow it is less embarrassing to say we left out a $2.50 part to save cost vs we didn’t think to include it. Two sided instructions in the same language was pretty comical. Don’t forget leave the top vent open just a sliver. 😂 All that being said I can’t wait to see you post a video putting it through a live cook test. Looks intriguing.

The zinc in galvanized metal will give off the fumes at just under 400°F. What you could easily do is build a small fire in your fire starter and run the galvanized nut through a metal wire and drop it in the fire until the fire is blazing hot and just let it cook a while.
The cap mentioned. I believe was to be used to keep the grill sealed when not in use so it wouldn't matter, unless you plan to use the grill without the flame boss, in which case, get a black iron cap or drop the cap in the fire with the nut.

thanks for this post. I recently purchased the Flameboss 500 online. I received no instructions. I had to find them online and the only thing they were good for was setting up the wifi. When i guy an kit for something i usually expect detailed instructions on what the parts are for and how they are to be installed, and i don't usually expect to buy extra pieces/parts, outside of a necessary tool. Literally no where does it say, btw you're going to need to drill a hole or two and you may want to purchase this part, not included. I have two of those plastic pieces i'm not even sure what they are for.

Also I brought one of your knives and I noticed it was coated with oil. Do you recommend me cleaning the knife before I use it or is it cooking oil on the blade I’m so excited to use it just wanted to know the proper care

    • @meatcranium4280
      @meatcranium4280  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Robert Cruz I highly recommend watching some Carbon Steel care Knife Videos. Wash the knife, Immediately Dry it, then keep a light coat of oil on the outside, this is done to prevent rusting. Over time the knife will form a Patina (good rust), which the blade darkens. I actually forced a Patina onto my blade by : Drying, wiping with alcohol, then soaking in Lime juice overnight. The blade will darken up. I will eventually get around to making a video of the care and maintenance of one.

So i've had my Flameboss 500 for some months now, and honestly have not always used it since buying my Weber kettle. You don't really need it on a Weber kettle. Anyhow after several attempts and trying to tweak what i was going to see if i could get it to work, i've had no success. The controller is advertised as "universal" and compatible with Chargriller offset smokers. It is not or at least not with my Chargriller competition pro 8125. If use the controller to heat the griller it never gets above 200. If I heat up the griller first and use the controller to maintain temperature, it causes the temp to fall below 200. Other than the temperature monitoring features, it is a complete waste of money.

Lincoln11 LOL!! Good point. I get close because I’m outside and wind may interfere with the sound, also my boom mic is not good outside, that’s why. You Funny, dully noted.

Connectivity of this device is terrible. Setting it up is a horrible experience, and then it does not connect in the back yard, even when every single other device I own does. I would have gotten more value for money throwing it directly into my Kamado Joe

Why would you spend that much money on a Flame Boss and then use a shit-ass Weber??? Get yourself a ceramic kamado grill to throw that onto!! I recommend Primo or Kamado Joe
