The boards I work on are a lot simpler and much older (30-40 years older) than @PaulDaniels but have still learnt plenty of things which I can apply to pinball circuit board repair.
PINBALL EVANGELISTS, What causes the coils to lock on SS games? because when the CPU freezes or ROM is bad the coils will lock on and damage the coils and driver transistors, anything to prevent this?

Im pretty sure the nylon rings are for the playfield side of the flipper bushing in case you have extra thickness in playfieild ie perspex.
