You can reuse your current ECU just get it remapped to suit, all of the non-VVC MEMS3 ECUs are the same. PG1s are always recommend too in order to handle the torque
@Blue ZR 135 I have a 1.8 flywheel and a 1.4 and the 1.4 flywheel is twice the weight as a 1.8 it makes me wonder if the inertia of the flywheel is what breaks the gearboxes
That is something to think about for sure, I remember when I reused my 1.4 gearbox and flywheel etc on my 1.8 it was smaller and I think slightly lighter than the 1.8 one. I think the main problem, and the one I encountered was the main bearings wouldnt be able to cope, and the diff would torque itself out
The 1.8 pulls alot harder from the lower revs for sure and the PG1 has better gear ratios compared to the 1.4 gearbox. I’d like to 1.8t swap my ZR but it’s a decently rare monogram one with only 50k miles so it’d be criminal to rip the engine out of it 😂. The Kmaps remap seriously improved it compared to the standard map, and as you said I’m gonna look into getting some 135 cams installed at somepoint too
The 1.8 makes its torque much further down in the rev range making it feel a lot more responsive. The gear ratios in my PG1 are actually very close to the R65 as it isnt a close ratio PG1. Id definitely go 135 cams and maybe even a ported head before considering engine swapping yours because of the rarity however, if that isnt enough power its your car so have it how youre going to enjoy it!
@@Forgotten_performance Mines a later IB5 gearbox and yeah the 1.4 doesnt wake up untill 3.5k-4k revs but the remap has made it much more responsive down low it was pretty painful before the map 😂 And tbh the cars fun enough as it is anyway, these don't need loads of power if anything it's fun being able to rag it everywhere. My dad drives a 330hp Insignia VXR and he was still giggling driving the ZR on the twisty roads after we had it remapped 😂
The 1.4 is a great option once tuned! I absolutely loved mine. To get yours to 135bhp you need a cold air intake, 52mm throttle body, full exhaust, MG TF135 Camshafts and a good remap from someone such as Kmaps 🙂
@@Forgotten_performance what cold air intake like i know that a cold air intake can just become a warm one too haha and make even less power so what would you recommend ?
@@Forgotten_performance oh yeah i seen everyone runnin them where do you run the dict to like ziptie the enterance of the pipe to the cold air filter to the bottom grill lol or somethin
Building a 1.4 with high lift cams atm so my kids can join me on track days can't wait to see it move like your 1.4
Honestly the 1.4 is such an underrated little gem of an engine. 135bhp with minimal work, seen one achieve 163bhp on a vvc head with pocketed liners
@Blue ZR 135 such a cracking engine iv just bought a 1.8 bottom end and high lift cams as far as I'm aware I just need to pg1 gearbox etc and ecu ?

Nice🙂
i got an 84 BHP 1.4 what would i do to get it to 135 brake ? tell ya what the 1.8 pulls but the 1.4 also seems like a good option there too

Theres a few options for the ZR but any enclosed one with a cold air feed. ITG maxogen for example if i have the name right
