i think adapting the combat for it to be more "modern" is a good idea and would make the game a lot more fun
though im not so sure about the colors

ngl that prototype looks a lot more polished than the previous one, I really makes me want to see a full game out of it

While I can see the motivation, I must admit that I remain partial to more vibrant colors, I've always found that as games get more "modern" (or rather, serious) they tend to lose that lovely color palette that makes games a joy to look at. Imo, color is good.
The rest of the progress is great, a more modern take on the standard 2D zelda formula, very interesting to see this project evolve.

Love the water wave animation! It makes the world feel more alive and less “flat”. Would be cool to see more dynamic motions like that when you get to a point for focusing on cosmetic improvements

Maybe flicker the “torchlight” in the cave and let the corners cast shadows? Or have grass and flowers that sway a little in the breeze?

It's slowly becoming more of a Zelda-Inspired Game than a Recreation.
    It has Earthbound's fluidity.

Your videos are so fun to watch as it has some real indie breath of fresh air. As for the colors, they look quite pale in comparison to the previous but it all depends on the aesthetic. Eyeballs, main character is a hood rogue, caves with bats makes this game undead-orientated which I think if you stick with it would really fit the palette.

Regarding the game itself, it definitely looks and feels well improved. Definitely a direction you should be taking! ❤️
One thing however, I'd love to point out how the OG character has stuck with me, almost in a way that he's the one doing the commenting, showing us his world through your voice. He's grown on me for the videos and whenever I see him, it's as if he's become synonymous with you. ❤️

Absolutely love it. This update truly shows how fast paced and rapidly changing game dev can be, and with it how those changes affect many aspect of development.
Personally I much prefer this over the previous design, it felt too bright and the main character limited us in many ways (one being creating new animations etc.)
I really hope that with the hook you will get a chance to drag an enemy and perhaps do attacks/combos with a cooldown.
The bomb smoke effect imho could be a bit more "pixel art'ish" to fit the overall theme too.
I fully agree on the idea to making it more fast paced. This will still have Zelda vibes, but with a mix of your own creativity. Keep it up Kyle!

i know this is a bit older, but regarding the art style.
some objects have a black comic book style outline, but others don't.
I personally don't like them as much, but at the very least should this be consistent, either have them everywhere or not at all

You should try making an HP bar for enemies and you...also make that when you swing you see a dmg number or something like that, and it may be a little too early...but try making a parry movest with maybe a shield or your sword, along with three types of attacks for enemies:light, medium and heavy, the light and medium can be parried but the medium as longer wind up,the heavy is only dodgeble and it has a little more wind up and maybe something to recognize the attacks, like an aura.maybe traps along the world are a good combination.i know its very much to do but i hope the game turns out very good once its finished...the rest of the game is very well made and the sprites are very nice shaped

  • @Jack_______oh

Looks cool. Perhaps screen shake should only happen when enemies are killed though, rather than with each hit.

The new direction looks good. I was so used to seeing it the other way but I agree with this new direction. I would like to see some more settings and configuration for mobile devices. You can display a player health either on top or below the player, possibly semi transparent. A small icon for current items with a quantity. Not necessary the actual item but a smaller sprite as a representative. A 'L and R' button or function to cycle through weapons and items can be useful.

I like the updated combat system better. After replaying old 80s/90s JRPG I felt that the stiffness of the controls was not something I missed at all 😂...
I also like the new color palette a lot. I think it might miss some small areas of more saturated colors on some small elements to create interesting visual contrasts. Since the main world is green/blueish, anything opposite on the chromatical circle should work. Maybe the eyes of an enemy are red, but there are also red-orange flowers, some mushrooms, and maybe a mailbox?
I think the soft particles clash a bit with the rest of the design. Using pixelated, hand drawn simple shapes with simple pixelated shading as particles might work better visually than "soft" shapes with gradients (a very personql opinion maybe 😂).

In terms of constructive criticism, It's going to be hard to come by from TH-cam's comment section, because no matter what your game is your own, and any art style, theme, colour palette or game loop etcetera, are completely yours, you just have to make sure that at the end of the day, your happy with what you've created. That YOU are satisfied.
In my opinion, I think the camera could do with an update, it feels too claustrophobic to look at for me but then again, if you've constructed your levels with this camera in mind then this probably means nothing to you, lol.
Also it looks like your enemy designs need updating because they don't stand out much and aren't very original looking.
All in all, you're doing a great job! Keep working hard 💪 :)

The character sprite looks good, same with the trees. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more diversity in locations though, don't forget that all the best adventure retro games like chrono trigger and zelda swords were in loads of different looking locations each with their own mechanics. Undertale is another game you can look into for inspiration in terms of storytelling and originality.

I think you're doing a great job with this! Every new iteration makes it feel "brand new" and makes me excited for a day when I might get to play it.
My only comment at this stage would be ... since you're already looking towards modern games as a basis for how things work, perhaps it's time to rethink the "world" this guy lives in. You have a very Zelda-esque kind of world here, which is fine. But it's been done before. What if it wasn't in a fantasy woods realm, but on an alien world. Or another dimension where grass is blue and the trees have vines that climb out of the ground. IDK, just kinda rethinking the world building a little to move it more away from Hyrule and place it into something new and alien.

Having had a quick read through the comments so far, it looks like by updating and departing slightly from the original brief, people are making suggestions that would take you further away from it. So I'd suggesting having a good think about where you want this to go from here. Whatever you decide is fine, it's just a question of how far you feel you can stray while still calling this series "recreating Zelda".

Goood. How about making things around you have meaning, like why are there trees there and why would someone plant trees randomly in the middle of the field.
I mean what does that guy think taking care of his tree just to make the field not empty.

  • @rolfathan
    @rolfathan ปีที่แล้ว +1

This combat looks way better. Honestly, inspiring. Though, I'm honestly not feeling the new visual style of the tilesets. Less saturated is fine, but you need to be careful with it. The trees and grass look too similar. Harsh black lines on the trees don't lend well to the style either.
Desaturated pixel art can look very good, but it's a lot trickier to do right. Maybe it's in progress enough that we'll see this desaturated look evolve, but as it is TODAY it feels like a downgrade.
