As a patient with multiple multisystemic autoimmune issues "hey this patient is really sick but we're pretty sure it has nothing to do with our specialty. Good luck figuring it out." Is literally _every_ appointment.

Behavior like this starts in internship (its actually fascinating/frustrating watching these people in their element , they are very slippery nothing sticks to them and they manage to pass off everything to someone else ) when they finally get to become consultants they have already transcended boss level .

  • @nasukoukamarehi

Yep, you spend all of med school learning minute details about every possible EKG aspect and when you finally become an intern and meet those real life EKGs, best you can do is "ummm.... patient heart sick, yesh". I don't even know how you get from point A to point B but the struggle is real

Ok but being serious for a moment, the 1 pediatric GI I ever saw was the FIRST PERSON to say "this probably all has to do with the same systemic issue. But whatever that thing is, I have no clue. It probably causes your constipation, your swallowing issues. Maybe even your diabetes." He was 100% correct. He retired before I could see him again. It wasn't til I was 18 that i finally met another doctor that thought the same way. He was a rheumatologist. He retired not long after I met him as well. Next time I went there, it ended up being one of those ending connection appointments when it was supposed to be a follow up to continue care. The guy was the type of doc that kept u waiting cuz he cared so much. U booked an appointment about an hr before u needed to actually get there cuz he typically spent an extra hr with his patients. And u always finished the appointment with some sort of plan. He sent me down for blood tests when we were done. He wanted to find out if I possibly had a rare blood disorder that caused inflammation flares in my hands and the anemia i've had on and off for the majority of my life. Tests were negative and i'm pretty sure I didn't get to talk with him about that further. My memory sucks tho so idk. What I do know is, the best docs tend to retire or find a better job opportunity not long after meeting me. I mean, my nutritionist lasted I think 2 yrs before she, without any warning whatsoever, left her practice for another one nearby, and never sent me info about a way to start as her patient again. Idk what happened but that was an awful experience even tho she was the person I absolutely loved going to appointments for.
Annnnyway, general medical past aside, I love GI lol. My current GI is great. He actually found a newish constipation med for me to try earlier this yr since no constipation meds solved the issue. (i also have Gerd and take omeprazol for it at its highest dose so ik that effects my constipation. My swallowing issues r due to dry mouth which is due to both my general dehydration issue and my SFN which causes dry mouth. I'm sure the acid from the gerd doesn't help much either lol). And no dietary changes tailored to constipation were helpful either. My body malfunctions in every way it can without making me stay in the hospital. Most of it is due to SFN and its MANY effects on the body, that r still being discovered cuz it's such a new diagnosis. Idr y I started this comment. I've been making a lot of comments today lol.

I was recently hospitalized and I have this weird condition where I forget to breathe when I am asleep. At home, I have a BiPAP machine that forces air into my lungs as I sleep, but in the hospital, I kept falling asleep without wearing it since the mask is annoying to wear and it is impossible to get a good night's sleep in a hospital so I'm stuck taking multiple little naps throughout the day. The consequence of this is that my pulse oximeter was saying that my O2 levels were fine when awake (93-97) but would drop down into the low 70s when I fell asleep. The easiest way to make nurses panic is to have someone who is admitted for an infected wound on his leg suddenly stop breathing, only to wake up when you rush in and be perfectly fine.

No. It would have been courtesy and good practice to include the colonoscopy reports WITH the referral. The PCP should have them on the system. The GI would need to find out which hospitals, which dates, source the relevant consent for the release of information forms, patient needs to sign them all and then they get sent off. A lot of work and relying on the patient’s memory of where and when.
