In this interview Rick has shown that he was an intelligent and articulate person.
It was great to hear him say what I've always believed.
He said what I've been telling people for decades.
Though anybody that knows anything about music will know that QUO played a lot more than 3 chords.

"40 years on 3 chords.... or 3 years on ..... " Francis Rossi said once, when picking up yet another music award.

Rick is such a nice personality. Obviously hurt by the critics, but loved by the fans. The best rhythm guitarist is all time.

Status Quo in their pomp were one of the all time great rock 'n' roll bands. Rock 'n' roll is largely based on a simple 3 chord 12 bar progression which has served music well from the days of WC Handy in the early 20th century. It was good enough starting point for BB King, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Carl Perkins, early Beatles, and countless other artists and bands in many genres. However, the "all sounds the same" accusation is a bit of a myth that has attached to Quo. Only about half the songs on their own hits album "12 Gold Bars" are actually 12 bar blues. Many of their songs have 5 or more chords in them. Any chord can be played in different inversions and spacings. Mainly, though, chord structure is only one small part of music. Music is about rhythm, timing, harmony, lyrics, phrasing, contrast, dynamics... and much more. There are good bands out there who play whole songs with one chord. It's so easy to sneer at Status Quo, but most of the people who criticise them probably have no clear idea what a chord or a bar is. They did what they did better than anyone else, and brought joy to millions.

When Tony Visconti says you only need 3 chords you have to listen. Actually there was always a jealousy of Quo.

    Good on ya Rick.
What he said about the critics was a very PUNK attitude.
John Lydon of Sex Pistols said they liked Status Quo because of their attitude.
Pistols liked QUO's music as well.

Quo were and are a total vibe. The establishment hates a y musicians who can consistently reach and effect people in a positive way. Only one Quo, like so many other class acts, they stood alone.

  • @Lloyd1885

They should have ignored the critics in the early days and just got heavier and heavier...
Re people thinking they could copy quo...back in the day some prof in uni somewhere took the tracks apart and concluded that the music was far more complex and structured than it appeared.
Every band has its 'sound' Sabbath sound the same, Zeppelin, the Stones, The Sweet etc, so effin what!

I’ve heard so many bands trying to cover Status Quo and they never sound like Status Quo. Of course the voices will sound different anyway, but that’s not what I mean. And unlike Rick here, I don’t necessarily agree with the idea that none of those bands meant it. The thing is… (yes, I claim to know the answer - at least partially 😅)… the thing that it’s all about their unique feel and and the ways they achieved that feel. Rick, as most of you probably know, used extremely heavy strings. Like CRAZY heavy. You can’t even get sets of strings as heavy as what he was using. Most guitars couldn’t even handle the tension. And I think it’s fair to say that even the toughest guys will have troubles playing guitars with strings as heavy as that. To then play those shuffles, you know, with the pinky going back and forth between the fifth and the sixth…, I wouldn’t even be able to keep this going for one song, let alone a whole set, with a set of light strings. But Rick makes it even crazier. I went to one of their concerts and somebody I knew caught one of Rick’s picks. Of course I wanted to examine a real Rick pick (sorry for that 🥴) and I was stunned to find out that Rick used these unbelievably thin, floppy picks! So Rick is playing like a beast on a guitar with impossibly heavy strings, using impossibly thin picks!!! This means, just to emulate his style of playing, you would have to do stuff that will take every other guitar player in an extremely uncomfortable situation. And that’s just Rick!
In comes Francis. Francis is a completely different type of player. He uses light strings. As light as most beginning guitar players would use. These strings are much easier to play and they’re easy to bend. Unfortunately I have no idea what picks Francis is using, but no matter what picks he uses, when Rick and Francis would hit a power chord or anything else for that matter, there will always be a slight sense of delay between the two. This is important. And even though they used the same amps and they both used Telecasters as their weapons of choice, they really did sound very different from each other. But the most important thing here is the unexpected complexity of Francis’ playing. When he plays a shuffle he throws in a whole bunch of random (?) 16th notes with a weaker sounding upstroke, almost like a drummer using ghost notes on his snare drum.
The two of them combined create a massive sound together. And even when they play very similar guitar parts, these parts are close enough not to really notice, but in reality Rick and Francis had a completely different style of playing.
Whenever you listen to a Quo cover by any band, both guitar players will play those famous guitar parts like most normal guitarists would. And there’s no magic there. But nobody can play these parts like Rick did and hardly anyone plays these parts the way Francis does them. If you take these differences that are so hard to copy out of the equation, it just won’t sound the same. It will lose all of its magic.
There you go. I actually quite seriously studied this phenomenon, because as a huge Status Quo fan it puzzled me for a loooooong time. 😊

All modern music came from the blues and the blues is a 1-4-5 chord progression . some new bands only use 1 or 2 chords . Que where one of the best live bands to watch, great music great days.

A lot of guitar players do not have the stamina to play the chords that Rick put behind the songs. You got to stretch your little finger Chuck Berry chords. Not a lot of guitar players can do it good and fast
