i'd pay full price on Steam if they would remaster Cataclysm as well. its Homeworld meets John Carpenter's The Thing. its an strategy game, but those screams of the people infected on those ships go trough your bones.
Ohad Balash Impractical? Lazy more like. Just get one of the games discs and build it using that, there is no excuse given that people own the original game on disc.
SuperAp0calypse yea. thats not possible. you cant recreate the source code from a game disc. and you need the source code. without it you would literally be rewriting the entire game code again.
Ohad Balash SuperAp0calypse AAA game dev here. Ohad is correct. The only thing that can be salvaged from the original game discs are the processed assets from the old game, which is exactly what we want to replace the most in a remaster. Without the source code, the only option is a remake. This is a lot more work than a remaster. Any gameplay and interface changes from Homeworld 1 will need to be reinvented. Same with whatever hacks were put in to glue it all together. As a result, the resulting game will play differently from the original. It will not be the same, as fans would expect.
Indeed. The infection scenes are awesome because they're so simple, subtle and yet so terribly effective. The crew screams for the last time, and then falls silent for ever.
Discover technology to destroy a huge threatening Alien specie . Battle the rogue fractions . Participate in great fleet battles and epic boss fight at the end. All that , feeling in every mission you have to "hurry up" . The game of my childhood HW1 and HW-C rocks !
@Restayvien It's not a step backwards - rather a step sideways. You'll be deeply satisfied after you play this game, especially if you're a true fan of the HW universe you'll be delighted by the HW lore that is in this game. (they creatively and seamingly expand on where HW left off; be sure to read HWC's manual, too).
One of the best opening cutscenes of any game. The only thing missing is a subtitles option for battle scene, I'd love to be able to hear all of the dialogue rather than just half of it.
I liked how they gave a reason for the Beast to have avoided HW2 entirely, without eradicating them from the Homeworld universe. It in essence still existing in Hyperspace and potentially in pockets of resistance in normal space. I mean the Naggarok wasn't Progenitor, but it comes from a similiar time. Just imagine an infected Sajuuk!?
agreed, this was probably the most grimdark homeworld, it had the best atmosphere. You could really feel the despair of the entire crew as they tried to evade the beast infection.
lulubeloo I like how each Homeworld plays to classics in sci-fi. The original game had a very Star Trek/2001/BSG feel to it, with themes of exploration, exile and solidarity taking front seat. Homeworld 2 went down the more destiny/messiah path, having a bit of a Dune/Star Wars feel to it. Cataclysm, of course, took the classic sci-fi horror approach. There's something absolutely terrifying about an unstoppable alien outbreak, and the expansion managed to capture feelings from the likes of Aliens, The Thing and Event Horizon.
Pepitobenito precisely! The Event Horizon refference is spot on. I remember when the rescue team found the video log and they saw what happened with the missing crew, everybody was screaming, getting maimed, gutted and raped. That scene always comes to mind when the infection spreads for the first time on the lower decks of the Kuun-Lan, and the entire science team screams "cut us looose" Ahh, wish they could make a remastered version of this one.
The thing that pissed me off in the first mission was that the Taiidan had energy cannons on their heavy cruiser before anybody else was using them. Good video though and thanks for the upload.
This was the followup to homeworld, homeworld 2 was called that because it is once again a re-conquering of their home world. What they need to complete the story is the uprising of the Vaygr empire, which I think would be EPIC.
@Pondsisini The Progenitors were highly AI based (For example the keepers, gun drones and mover bombers). As you may or may not know, the Beast cannot control AI vessels due to the lack of biomass (Aka a crew/pilot). The exception to this rule is the Beast hive frigate which the Beast modified from schematics. So while it is a good theory, it is unlikely.
I don't agree, Cataclysm is imo the best game in the series. I love what they did with the Bentusi, now they're actually enigmatic and interesting. And the Beast is one of the coolest villains ever.
Nah, its much more balanced than the scout micro spam you'd get online. The only problem is the cannon. Other than that I loved the fact that the capital ship had an array of defense guns.
this was the best of the homeworld games, but i did like homeworld 2, i would like to watch the cinematics from all of the games but i can only find a few..
I always desperately hope for a HW3, and I posted exactly what I thought the storyline should be at Relic forums so hopefully someone important saw it!
I call it poor judgement, It's kinda like one of the things that would be included in a "100 ways to die in a Homeworld strike craft" video. Some of the other included things would be flying head on into an asteroid, and trying to solo a missile destroyer
me too, although i often tweaked strike craft to have 10000 armor and firepower ;) but finishing any game without cheats feels better so now i'm stuck at lv8 in HW1
Storywise i don't see anything wrong here. Energy cannons were invented by Taiidani, and later stolen by Hiigarans. We do not know wether energy cannons were invented before storyline or during it, but since they appear in 1st mission it's safe to assume it was before. That's all. :)
Seeing as how Star Trek Online failed miserably and crashed and burned, I would love to see this game turned into an MMO, if done by the right people, it could do better than Eve Online, Black Prophecy, and JumpGate Evolution.
Yea, and it is also about 2 or 3 years newer, so it is bound to be more impressive anyway. This game was also not even produced by the same people as homeworld 1 and was actually significantly lower budget.
+Mike Gourdin Unlike the enemy fighters in the games we play where we've salvaged 50 ion frigates. "You're assignment is to take out the Kushan fleet of ion frigates." "Easiest thing in the world, command. It's precisely the purpose of str- Oh ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
@RogueCannon When I was younger I really loved this game and the feeling, now i look at it, Its basically Blob zombies I don't feel the story was better than the original Homeworld 1 storyline
Homeworld Cataclysm isn't compatible with Windows 2000/ME, XP or Vista. It's based on Windows 95 and 98. You can download a patch though. I think. Have a look around the web and see what you can find.
I wish there's a 3rd game... Homeworld 1 was revolutionary at it's time... It was and is still a great game but lots of people who don't know how to play it kinda desecrated it... Well... I guess it's not for people who prefer a 2D playing field...
Wow I never even heard about this game. Completed HW 1&2 but never saw of heard of this. Unfortunately after HWII this would feel like a step backwards so I think I'll skip it. Looks good for its time though.
***** Cataclysm takes place 15 years after the events of Homeworld 1, if i'm not mistaken. Homeworld 2 takes place aprox 200 years after. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Andreware S'jet became an Unbound neurally connecting herself to the mothership interface, so her life expectancy greatly increased somehow. Pretty much like the Bentusi pilots, everything comes with a price when you tackle on bioengineering.
Online play was wrecked by a pretty awful patch, and the nail in the coffin was some peoples insistence of destroying the resources around other teams starting areas with fighters despite even the designers saying this was an unintended bug an exploit. People quit arguing with those idiots and moved on to other games.
Personally, I found the gameplay of HW2 to be disappointing. Everything feels rushed and the pace seems artificially fast as everything dies as soon as you look at it. Cata was much better as you don't need ADHD to play it :P
Yeah, Homeworld 2's storyline is not as good as the first game with it's "End time" and Vaygr crap... Why don't they make a storyline *without* some invasion on their homeworld or something... They really shouldn't kill the bentusi, homeworld's future is bleak...
YEsss!!! and that is a purpose!!! BEcause the Kuun Lan is only a mining ship!!! Is not like the others motherships!!! doesnt have the ultimate technology in their hands.
The Main Problem of the Star Trek Online is, that is has nothing to do with the series and its philosophy. And mostly MMO sucks, this stupid EX-Point Hunt. Homeworld was a good game, a strategy game, why ruin it with bad Gamedesign?!
i'd pay full price on Steam if they would remaster Cataclysm as well. its Homeworld meets John Carpenter's The Thing.
its an strategy game, but those screams of the people infected on those ships go trough your bones.
source code was lost. would be impractical to try and remake this game from scratch.
Ohad Balash Impractical? Lazy more like. Just get one of the games discs and build it using that, there is no excuse given that people own the original game on disc.

indigodarkwolf best they could have currently done was just provide the classic game I think?
Indeed. The infection scenes are awesome because they're so simple, subtle and yet so terribly effective. The crew screams for the last time, and then falls silent for ever.
man the soundtrack of all homeworld games are spectacular!!
And this is why RTSs that use pre rendered cutscenes can suck it. This and three words: Gardens of Kadesh. That shit got creepy.
4:46 -> one of the best compositions in Computergames, i ever heared. It is so amazing.
Deus ex: Human Revolution main menu theme would like to speak with you
I swear, I can't unhear the Batman: Arkham series' main leitmotif here.
Discover technology to destroy a huge threatening Alien specie . Battle the rogue fractions . Participate in great fleet battles and epic boss fight at the end. All that , feeling in every mission you have to "hurry up" . The game of my childhood HW1 and HW-C rocks !
Just goes to show you, very well made games can still get your heart going, even when they begin to look dated.
Always loved that engagement between the two flotillas. That... neo-tribal war march in the music was always gripping.
@Restayvien It's not a step backwards - rather a step sideways. You'll be deeply satisfied after you play this game, especially if you're a true fan of the HW universe you'll be delighted by the HW lore that is in this game. everything in homeworld is cool
the story, the fighter launching, destroying the, firing...
Cataclysm, the best of the three Homeworlds!
Indeed
Make that four Homeworlds now.
@@LuBronyr indeed, quite mediocre writing for the latest installment. Cataclysm and HW1 still hold the torch high.
Music at 2:54 is really cool. Homeworld music is still my favorite ever. Paul Ruskay should have won a grammy
i love the intro tune. it's the best in the game no doubt.
commander voice
"100 ways to die in a Homeworld strike craft" lol that made my day, yeah you have a good point.
One of the best opening cutscenes of any game. The only thing missing is a subtitles option for battle scene, I'd love to be able to hear all of the dialogue rather than just half of it.
This game was a WAY better story then HW2. Really felt epic, and desperate in the same way HW1 did.
5:27 "Target that explosion and fire"
Hahahahahahahaa star trek easter eggs
Pretty sure I heard someone say "Target that explosion and fire!" quoting Captain Hikaru Sulu from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
You're right, it's at 5:28.
Let's hope the sales from the remastered edititon, can convince them to invest the time to recreate Cataclysm.
I loved all the homeworld games, and I can't wait for HW3
the best homeworld!! the history of this game is the best
agreed, this was probably the most grimdark homeworld, it had the best atmosphere. You could really feel the despair of the entire crew as they tried to evade the beast infection.

lulubeloo that scene is fucking amazing!
the firts that i played and by far my favorite of all.
I believe this story is just a little bit better than the other 2 Homewolrd game's
Sadly, it doesn't have a remastered version :(
@Restayvien
And I say that if you could afford to, you shouldn't skip it. I played this back when it first came out, and it's really epic...
epic game, 100 over 100. best RTS ever.
Yes...this is like the real homeworld 2

@Pondsisini Vagry attack music vs. Taidaan attack music rock off THIS SUNDAY AT TANAGRA!!
I love Cata, it felt I was fighting for something.
They need to do a cataclysm HD remake!! The game doesn't need more fancy stuff. it worked then and it still does nowadays
This was a rly awesome game. :)
Dat music at 3:53 on!
this was the best of the homeworld games, but i did like homeworld 2, i would like to watch the cinematics from all of the games but i can only find a few..
I always desperately hope for a HW3, and I posted exactly what I thought the storyline should be at Relic forums so hopefully someone important saw it!
11 years later, there IS a HW3 in the making
sad fact most folks like me can't play the game :(
anyone know the name of the song at 3:53?
+John Krause Homeworld Cataclysm OST: The First Battle
haha the fighters name always got me, acolytes
yeah, homeworld 2 its among my favorite.
I call it poor judgement, It's kinda like one of the things that would be included in a "100 ways to die in a Homeworld strike craft" video. Some of the other included things would be flying head on into an asteroid, and trying to solo a missile destroyer

i miss this guys on HW2, i mean Somtaaw is the best.
Homeworld Cataclysm is a much better follow up to homeworld than Homeworld 2.
thats is true!!!
@ImperatorZor
So flipping true.
Storywise i don't see anything wrong here. Energy cannons were invented by Taiidani, and later stolen by Hiigarans. We do not know wether energy cannons were invented before storyline or during it, but since they appear in 1st mission it's safe to assume it was before. That's all. :)
Have not played it yet. I'm gonna give it a try ASAP.
Have played it since. Fascinating story!
Whats the music name from th-cam.com/video/itnXy-jKwYY/w-d-xo.htmlm3s ? Heard this track in some documentaries, but couldnt find it anywhere...
Seeing as how Star Trek Online failed miserably and crashed and burned, I would love to see this game turned into an MMO, if done by the right people, it could do better than Eve Online, Black Prophecy, and JumpGate Evolution.
awesome i say yeah that would be funny one would be to try and fight inside a beast ship
HOMEWORLD SERIES rock(except for HW 2 its crappy storyline)makes me want to dust of my cataclysm cd again coss im into HW 2 for now
scan mmo is a good idea but i wish this could be turned into a movie how sadly i dont know it would focus more on space battles than character stories
If this is great, imagine a Remastered take on this, whether official or fanmade.
@CosmicEquilibrium how do you think should it look like?
Yea, and it is also about 2 or 3 years newer, so it is bound to be more impressive anyway. This game was also not even produced by the same people as homeworld 1 and was actually significantly lower budget.
any one know the name of the music 2:04 onwards please been racking my brain
Raiders of the arc
No, riders - rpobably the name of the battle theme at 3.53. What name of the music on 2.04?
Poor bastard at 4:40 never knew what hit him.
Mike Gourdin he had no time to feel the heat from that ion pulse, probably the most painless space death.
+Mike Gourdin Unlike the enemy fighters in the games we play where we've salvaged 50 ion frigates.
"You're assignment is to take out the Kushan fleet of ion frigates."
"Easiest thing in the world, command. It's precisely the purpose of str- Oh ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
In cataclysm big file, kushan missile destroyer doesn't exist!
Don't skip this game, As far as story and gameplay go, It's a lot better then HW2
I wonder.. if they couldn't hold them, why would they just send the Somtaaw to aid a bit here and there?!
I have this problem, too.
I wish there's a 3rd game...
Homeworld 1 was revolutionary at it's time...
It was and is still a great game but lots of people who don't know how to play it kinda desecrated it...
Well...
I guess it's not for people who prefer a 2D playing field...
what a great game ... the difficulty scaling was bullshit in some missions though :)
They probably just don't wanna share their tech.
imagine this game wih HD graphics
Hiigarans Transform and Rollout!
I think the Bentusi originally invented everything and sold off the specs to other races. Then they started making their own stuff.
ill call it a lucky shot
Do you rely think its possible to make a Space RTS MMO ?
Sounds like Optimus Prime is narrating
Is someone skilled at HW2 modding? We need a Cataclysm2 mod!
Wow I never even heard about this game. Completed HW 1&2 but never saw of heard of this. Unfortunately after HWII this would feel like a step backwards so I think I'll skip it. Looks good for its time though.
THis for me is the real Homeworld 2...same level than the Homeworld 1. IS a masterpiece.
Does this take place before or after homeworld 2?
oh gosh. ...
***** Cataclysm takes place 15 years after the events of Homeworld 1, if i'm not mistaken. Homeworld 2 takes place aprox 200 years after. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
lulubeloo
True. Though it's never explained why Karan S'jet(t?) is still alive.
Andreware S'jet became an Unbound neurally connecting herself to the mothership interface, so her life expectancy greatly increased somehow. Pretty much like the Bentusi pilots, everything comes with a price when you tackle on bioengineering.
I Love You guys! True Fans of the Game i love
*Sigh* If only Relic wasn't bought by THQ and only for them to go crashing down aswell...
This game totally deserves a proper remaster and not the abominations jizzbox did.
@RogueCannon I think taht HM1 is better then Cataclysm, but, Homeworld 2 have just graphics good, it's really like the same that Homeworld 1
Online play was wrecked by a pretty awful patch, and the nail in the coffin was some peoples insistence of destroying the resources around other teams starting areas with fighters despite even the designers saying this was an unintended bug an exploit. People quit arguing with those idiots and moved on to other games.
@Imperial5555 an*
Homeworld cataclysm was basicly a "this is what we can do", the features are fun, but make a very unbalecned game.
Yes HW2 was weaker in story but gameplay is way better
Personally, I found the gameplay of HW2 to be disappointing. Everything feels rushed and the pace seems artificially fast as everything dies as soon as you look at it.
Cata was much better as you don't need ADHD to play it :P
try patching it i did it and it worked im usin vista
Yeah, Homeworld 2's storyline is not as good as the first game with it's "End time" and Vaygr crap...
Why don't they make a storyline *without* some invasion on their homeworld or something...
They really shouldn't kill the bentusi, homeworld's future is bleak...

great game, but compared to the rest of the series, the ship design of the somtaaw is not so cool. its a pity i, really like them.
YEsss!!! and that is a purpose!!! BEcause the Kuun Lan is only a mining ship!!! Is not like the others motherships!!! doesnt have the ultimate technology in their hands.
completely agree, HW2 just seemed...forced? also had some annoying abrahamic faith undertones to it.
nooo... the beast is so dumb... so unoriginal, like zombie's in space.. wtf!?
The Main Problem of the Star Trek Online is, that is has nothing to do with the series and its philosophy. And mostly MMO sucks, this stupid EX-Point Hunt. Homeworld was a good game, a strategy game, why ruin it with bad Gamedesign?!
i love hw cataclysm, i agree its way better than hw2 in history and even in design.
