Finally got to watch it. What you said about no makeup on children, absolutely 100% agree. Children are so innocent and pure and beautiful just the way they are. Well done fenna
Yes, no shame :) It might work and they were going to get a little piece of candy anyway! However, be careful when bribing someone's kids. I usually just 'bribe' other kids with fun activities. First I ask them to cooperate (be in the family pic) and then later we can play hide and seek, make a drawing, kick around a balloon etc. No candy!
I Love your videos. You're so Sweet and helpful. I really appreciate you taking time to walk us all through your world ❤ Also, your style makes me instantly relaxed, you make everything look perfect!
Hello Fenna, I always watch your video and I've learned a lot. I'm Riza Sales, 22 years old from Philippines. I started may business of Newborn Photography last 4 months ago. You help me a lot you inspired me. The backdrop I'm using is just VINYL. I wish i could show them to you. God bless you Fenna 😍
Thank you so much! I always love reading where my subscribers live. Vinyl works great as a backdrop. Sometimes a piece of fabric (curtain) also works great.
Awesome video as always Fenna. I always find it harder to take photos of children I know. Mostly because I tend to take our relationship for granted and think that they will cooperate because they know me and I forget to give them any direction. I am learning to treat it like a normal shoot. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you! I actually find it harder to photograph my own kids, because they are not as 'shy and polite' as most kids are in the studio. Haha, they are not impressed if I ask them to do something. That's why I keep the sessions with my own kids a lot shorter and we usually go and do something fun afterwards. Like an adventure! Fortunately, they still love going for a little shoot and they love coming with me to the studio so at least they are willing!
You got the 105? Wow, fancy now eh? 😆😆 Looks like an amazing lens! Great tips - I especially agree with not putting makeup on kids; unless they're playing a role or if it's for some kind of themed shoot, it's really not necessary. Some kids have red veins or patches on their face (my son does) which can be eliminated in post. Covering it up for them when they're having a photoshoot can make them self conscious of it in their every day life, and kids just don't need that kind of thing weighing on their minds.
The lens is great! It's actually been the one and only lens I've been using for outdoor sessions since august 2018. So yeah, not as new anymore, but still amazing! Yes, I did forgot to mention that make-up can be fun in a themed shoot where the make-up is more used like face-paint and it's part of the mood board of the shoot. Not to 'fix' things. Photoshop can indeed be a great tool. With this particular shoot I didn't edit their faces.
Just stumbled upon your video since my mother wants me to get pictures of my niece and nephews in a sunflower field. I've never done children portraits (mainly wildlife and nature is my thing) and I'm by no means a professional (I use a Nikon d3300), more of a hobby for me and your video definitely gave me some pointers so I really appreciate that you took time out of your day to make a video like this. I'm a little jealous of people that have kids! (I know it's not all fun and games, but to have access to cute little beings at all times would probably do wonders for my photography) My youngest brother eventually started refusing doing things for me , wouldn't let me take pictures or make videos of him after he turned 14... Such a shame. My friends and family are not as easily bribed or trick into being in pictures either 😂I love photos of children though, they are so cute. My trick when I take pictures of kids is to make it playful, make them run towards me, or have them throw leaves up in the air. Or I will have them tell me jokes and secrets, cause that always brings out their smiles. Some parents actually cried when they saw the photos of their kids because they were so natural and looked so happy. That was my favorite reaction!
try offering freebie or super cheap sessions and asking local daycares or schools if you can put up a flyer or even advertize in their newsletters that go home to parents! You'll probably get heaps of takers!
OMG! Very simple location and you did amazing with your kids photoshoot. I feel we have that in common. I just don't stop taking pictures of my kids. They are growing so fast and the best pictures are when they are little. So precious memories. Thanks for ur tips. Will like ur email to send u my photos of my kids.
Very true, I just love photographing my own kids. They grow up so fast! I still wish I had taken more pics when they were still smaller. You can send me a message on instagram at instagram.com/fenna_and_photography
So true. I love taking pics of my kids and they grow up so fast. I regret not taking more pics of them when they were even smaller, even though I have like a million pics. You can send me a message at instagram.com/fenna_and_photography
True, with a 50mm I wouldn't have to back-up as much to get horizontal full-body pic. However, in this case it was a quite narrow patch of sunflowers, right next to a road. I didn't want to have the road in the pics. Also I love my 105mm, but I didn't want to be too far away from the kids with the road right next to them. The only 50mm I have is the 1.8 and I wanted to have a creamier bokeh. I would love test a 50mm F1.4 or F1.2.
Very true! Be careful with nature. Therefore we didn't walk in between the sunflowers. They actually planted patches of sunflowers in our city for the population to pick. Very cool. We decided to let them grow a bit more and bought some sunflowers today at a flower shop to put in our living room. Also, ask permission and don't trespass on private property.

You inspire me!!! You are my top favorite photographer to watch.
You always make it look so easy Fenna! Thank you for another great video.
Thanks very much for all the tips. Very helpful to shoot my kids' photos.
Aha’! So bribery is the key! 😅 thanks for the nice video Fenna. Beautiful kids ❤️

I think you should use in full frame camera for 50mm lens, bcoz invirment is too good and more photograph shoot horizontal view .

Welke scherpstelstand gebruik je bij 2 kindjes of gezin en welk af-veldstand?
Bonus Tip: Be respectful of the sunflowers. Too many photogs trample them.
