So, being the loving wife that I am, I started doing some research. Long story short, I ended up going down the rabbit hole that is ergonomic mice and landed on the Kensington Vertical Wireless Trackball mouse. My husband gave up on it after a day, but I decided to try it for 14 days. So, just how good is an ergonomic mouse? I Tried An Ergonomic Mouse, Here’s my Verdict!

    I used a standard track ball used with all fingers at an old job. Awkward at first, but I got proficient to the point of breezing through Excel spreadsheets with no problem. They are fantastic for limited desk space.

    I think people underestimate ergonomic mice and the effect it can have on your health. If you factor in the amount of hours we spend with our hands cramped in a weird position, it makes sense to invest in your health! 💪🏻

    It's for graphic designer. More precision and you need to configured your mouse pointer alot faster so you will not get thumb fatigue and you will work faster as well 😀

  • @rblythin

    I recently upgraded to the kensington slimblade. I find the flat profile more comfortable, easier to switch up the finger tips to other parts of the finger or even palm to prevent one area getting too tired. The thumb style definitely has a longer adjustment period. Still any trackball/eco mouse certainly helps hand health long term.
    My first proper computer was a twinhead laptop (1991 from Calgary AB, $3600!). Which had a trackball for input before track pads came into being. I guess that's why I've never had difficulty swapping to them :)

    Love the honest opinion. I've used the thumb trackball from logitech for almost 30 years and I loved them.
    But I did get a sore thumb in the end, so I switched to the Elecom Huge, that one you control with pointer, middle and/or ring finger.
    Love it, no more strain on one finger. Only downside is it's almost impossible to scroll while dragging something.
    I've never even seen a horizontal scroll wheel like that before, that would be very helpfull sometimes for sure, Might do something with a hotkey to swap direction of the normal scroll wheel, thanks for the idea

    I've had this trackball mouse for about a week. I love it. For me it was very intuitive. I came here hoping that I could learn how to program the buttons, especially for volume control and maybe screen selection.
    Great trackball. And I was happy to get rid of my mouse pad too.

    I would recommend trying the Logitech MX ergo plus. You can adjust the angle to make it more comfortable. It was my 2nd trackball, and now I have 2 of them I use on 4 devices. Plus it has the center wheel, and it has flow.
    I put the ergo against the MX master 3 and went with the Ergo. So take that as you will, but for your needs it sounds perfect
    Give it a shot

    • @alejandroelcid
      @alejandroelcid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely, it also solves the battery issue she complained about with its lithium battery. Even before the pandemic I would bring my Logitech MX to use instead of the school's computer mice.

    • @lmaoroflcopter
      @lmaoroflcopter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alejandroelcid I like the m570 because it uses AA batts. The MX ergo I have always runs out of battery at the worst times. It's battery life is nowhere near as good as a single AA it seems. The m570 stays good for over a year. My ergo needs charging every 3 months or so.
      Been using trackballs for about 20 years now. I play first person shooters with the thing.

    Your review was thorough and concise, clearly laying out all the pros and cons. It seems, on balance, to be a solid device with alot of beneficial features. I can see how the holding orientation might be better for you in the long run. It's actually tempting but the price point is a little prohibitive

  • @alejandroelcid
    @alejandroelcid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You should probably try again with the Logitech MX Ergo Plus. You can adjust the angle of the mouse, it is heavy which gives it more stability, and it uses a lithium battery (micro-usb unfortunately). This Logitech mouse in particular is also convenient because you can connect it using a usb cable (it works even while charging) or with the included dongle, and it can switch between two devices/screens.

    Good video, thank you for reviewing the trackball. I used a LiveTech vertical mouse with a standard scroll wheel and buttons, with a laser, no trackball. That was great. Until it lasted that is - the scroll wheel broke in about 7 months. Reliability issue apart the mouse design was quite ergonomic, curved surfaces for the fingers and good support for larger hands as well. I bought a Logitech Lift mouse yesterday and although it had good build, silent buttons and a good angle, it wasn't big enough for my hands so I returned it.

    I have an ambidextrous kensington mouse and a vertical mouse. It really depends on the programs I'm working with. I got RSI after working 36hrs nonstop, so I finally decided to make some changes and it's worth it. I'm planning to buy this one just to have more options since this is thumb focused and I need to switch it up so that my fingers can split up the work 😅. I like using trackballs for 3D work but I use my vertical more for CAD and photoshop. The kensington expert is the most comfy yet the biggest, it's like a big ass car but it's the most efficient plus it has a scroll ring and the bigger the ball, the better it is for use actually. Also, there's a white and silver version to this but yes, it's still bulky haha

    mx ergo plus user here. no finger thumb fatigue or pain. took me few hours to get used to at first. Now, i can never go back to regular mouse anymore. The cons for the mouse is just the click is not silent. As regular (not heavy) user of photoshop/premiere, I find it hard sometimes to point or adjust when editing because I set my mouse sensitivity quite high, that's when I need to enable the precision mode. It also feels more convenient because you can just operate the mouse like anywhere on the bed or sofa. Recommend.

    I've been trying the Kensington Expert trackball for 10 days, but am back to testing my normal mouse again because I also miss the fast, precise positioning with my mouse across my three monitors. I've not had any pain issues after decades of mouse usage, but I've been careful to allow my arm to rest at 90 degs with the desk, and to have a good mouse pad wrist rest. I've also got adaptive acceleration set for my mouse, so I don't need much wrist movement at all to flick the mouse quickly across 3 monitors. Although I'm still leaning towards my normal mouse, I'll keep alternating a bit more to be sure.

    After develping some issues with my right arm I decided to try a vertical mouse. I got a cheap one because I wasn't sure it would work for me. There was a bit of a learning curve but it definitely alleviated the wrist pain. However, weridly, now I find that I start to develop fatigue in my tumb joint. It's hard to determine where the problem comes from. Perhaps I squees the mouse too hard between my fingers? It could be that I'm not holding it right, it could be the design. Now I'm wondering if I should give these trackball mice a try but I'm worried about the thumb fatigue. Or maybe I should go with Logitech's vertical mouse. I'm already used to the design and it looks like it has better support for your thumb. I guess it's just one of those things where you have to try out different things to see what works best for you.

    I have been using a vertical mouse for several years, both at work and at home on a two monitor set-up and am very happy with them. About a year ago I added a third monitor at work, and found that I had to make daily DPI adjustment to my mouse. This is to accommodate the extra movement of the curser(arrow) from monitor 1(left) to monitor 3 (right) passing through monitor 2(centre). A work colleague who has been using a ergonomic trackball mouse (very happy with it) suggested I should try using one, to overcome the extra movement. I purchased online a Logitech M575 Bluetooth Wireless Trackball mouse and am awaiting its arrival. I will of course do it justice and give it a good crack and provide you and update......fingers crossed.

    it is a getting used to. precision and speed are no issue after a while. check the dpi settings button, on level3 it has variable dpi with some velocity control, so quick move takes you far slow is precise.... so you will not have to constantly lift of your thumb. i navigate around a 4k screen without lifting once... and use your whole thumb, not just the tippy top. ;)

    I have been using the Marble Mouse wired for 18 years now, no wrist or finger strain. I agree that a large ball under the thumb would be painful with hours of use per day, but the upright Marble Mouse seems to get it right. Drape the hand over the mouse, with 4 configurable buttons and the ball under the three middle fingers.
    I am not sure it is still in production though

    I tried 2 vertical mice. They were not expensive, roughly $20 each. I gave the first mouse, a deluxe wired, to my sister while I opted for the wireless jellycomb --it was right for the size of my small hands.
    I was using my jelly comb while recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome and other rsi injuries on my right arm. Since then I haven't had much pain as before. I am never going back to a regular mouse or a flat keyboard. I even bought myself a Microsoft sculpt ergonomic keyboard to feel comfortable too and avoid ulnar deviation.
    But just a reminder, the ergonomic equipment is not the only solution to recover and prevent RSI. Adjusting your posture and your positions will play a huge role as well.
    Examples include the monitor height at eye level, using a foot pad/stool under your desk so your feet are not dangling in the air.
    And of course, always stretch

    Trackballs of any variety (thumb, palm, or fingertip) take over a year to build proficiency. The same is true of regular mice-for example, I can’t use a modern mouse as well as I used to primarily because I haven’t used them for daily work in about 10 years). Kensington is more associated with fingertip (orbit) and palm (slimblade/expert) trackballs. For the best thumb-controlled trackballs, I would strongly recommend Logitech’s products like the MX ergo (which incidentally also looks more stylish than the Kensington thumbs).

    Had a trackball mouse that came with our old '98 Dell PC. Had a big red red ball (...) like the one shown on this moue. Never had an issue with it in the 10 years we ended up using that computer. To this day i think its the reason I prefer track ball mouses (and the fact I decided to go into graphic design also is a factor here.) They're just so much more comfortable. It's a curve if you're not used to it sure, but I don't think I'll be going back to using standard mice.

    As a lefty, there is no such thing as an ergonomic mouse. It's even hard to find a symmetrical mouse that can be used in either hand. Razer makes a left handed gaming mouse that I wanted to try but the reviews showed terrible reliability and the price is stupid high for regular users.

    ONE DAY wow. It took me 30 days to get good using one for gaming. Another thing your ball sensitivity is WAY too low, If you put the cursor in the middle of your screen you should be able to move the mouse from one side to the other without taking your thumb off the ball (less movement of thumb, less thumb fatigue).
    I started with the Logitech m570 until I got tired of replacing switches and bought the Logitech MX ERGO plus,
    One thing definitely is to adjust the sensitivity where you don't need to take your thumb off the ball more than once to get from one side of your screen to the other. (and use a dpi button to slow the mouse down if needing to do really fine movements)
    AND differently, KEEP using it until you "get good".
    One day how did he ever learn how to drive?

    Hi, I use the Logitech MX ergo plus, which is a bit smaller than this on the video. I will never come back to a normal mouse anymore. Not only is better for your health but easy to get used to and no pads or space on your desk. For editing audio and video its great for the high resolution!

    Rule #1 with thumb trackballs - increase mouse cursor speed as high as you feel comfortable, and keep increasing it until your precision starts to suffer. Once you get used to it and your thumb gets relaxed, there is no going back. You'll do way less thumb moves (reduces thumb fatigue) and master fine movements.
    Rule #2 don't clean the ball. Ball has to be "greased" from your fingers (you can clean it and immediately grease it with your hands). BUT always keep those bearings clean from dust! It has huge impact on fine precision and initial rolling ressistance. Simple as that.
    My transition from MX Master to MX Ergo lasted for few months! I'm using it mainly for 3D/2D CAD on dual monitors. I still use Master for gaming, ofc!

      @@thao I've been using (Logitech) trackball mice since the mid 90s starting with the PS2 version of the Logitech Trackman Marble. I find them not only great for general computer use, but excellent for long hours of gaming. I can't understand why gamers prefer to constantly lift their mice up off the table every second, when fast moves can be done with a simple flick of the thumb on a trackball. My vote for best trackball is also the Logitech MX Ergo

    I think ergonomics are important but I have mixed feelings about ergonomic peripherals since they often are more expensive and I am not sure they actually add any advantage. Take an ergo mouse. you can have the same grip on a bog-standard mouse by using the side of your hand to stabilize instead of the palm and having your pointer finger over the scroll wheel and the primary click button. Also, I don't like that usually there aren't any left-handed ergo mouses.

  • @njf1410
    @njf1410 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't believe that one is particularly ergonomic. It still twists your arm to a vertical position. You should try a normal flat trackball, like the Logitech MX Ergo or one of the earlier Logitech trackballs like the M570. Your arm remains flat on your table or other surface. I would never go back to a mouse. A trackball is far more convenient. It uses up minimal space on your table. It can be used while you are in bed as it does not need a flat surface. On occasion, I hold the trackball in my left hand while I operate it from my right. So much better.

    I have the same issue as your husband, but instead of changing my mouse, I tried something else. Instead of putting the mouse on the side of the keyboard, i put the mouse in between my chest and the keyboard. I'll be sitting as if i was eating: with the top of my lower arm (just beneath the elbow) resting on the edge of the table. this allows me to move between mouse and keyboard faster. set the DPI higher to counter the lack of space between keyboard and the edge of the table.
    the mouse is then turned 90 degrees, as my hand will be as if it's resting on my desk. while i still have to rotate my cuffs, it's much more relaxing than having them straight if the mouse is on the side of the keyboard.
    another caveat is you will need to sit straight at the edge of the table, and won't be able to lean back as much. to overcome this, when i want/need to lean back, the mouse goes back to beside the keyboard and typically leaning back is not when I'm engaging as much on the keyboard except when gaming, which is okay since the key being used is typically limited to the side.

    First of all, forget every you know about using a mouse. I have used trackballs since they were invented. The key to ultimate comfort and efficiency with trackball is not using the tip of your thumb. You want to put the middle knuckle of your thumb near the top of the trackball. That knuckle is virtually round and you'll find moving your thumb with very light pressure will yield a very satisfactory result. After all, the trackball only weighs a couple grams. If you put it on the floor and blow on it it would go across room. Rolling the knuckle over the top ball takes takes virtually no effort at all.
    The next thing you want to do is increase the sensitivity and speed of your cursor to your maximum tolerance. You're no longer making movements of a mouse you are making tiny adjustments with your thumb. When you increase the cursor acceleration rate, a small push of the trackball will send the cursor to the other side of the screen. Does take time to get used to? Yes, but using it with the proper setup will decrease that time dramatically. Moving large distances on the screen should not mean you are picking your thumb off the ball to continue moving to the other side screen. Surprisingly enough you'll find your ability to move your cursor from letter to letter with a high level of sensitivity with a very light touch generated by small movement easy and accurate.
    The hardest part is getting used to the sensitivity. Mine is set up so that when I quickly move half the width of my thumb my cursor jumps to the other side of the page. Slowly moving the ball half the width of my thumb goes about 1/4 of the way across the screen. I guarantee, once you get used to this will never want to use the mouse again

    I disagree with all her gripes on this mouse as I’m extremely accurate with it, game with it, and move faster than all my friends with their normal mice when I use this. But the one thing I WILL agree with her on is thumb fatigue. After using this for 15 years, I now have arthritis in my right thumb only. Geesh I wonder why? But 15 years of a normal mouse or anything repetitive while hurt you. Since I used this, the hurt was in my right thumb. Take that for what it’s worth. But for her telling you it isn’t as fast. She used it for testing.
