I can remember my mom refinishing and “antiquing” some of our furniture back in the 70s. Yup, this method has been around a long time. Great job giving that old tired look an update.
I use a product called Retique It. It’s like a paint made with 70% wood particles so you just paint it on, add wood grain and then you can stain with normal wood stain. Looks awsome.
I think I will try the Re-tique process on a brand new, small, painted particle board "Furrino" brand bookcase. It looks like Re-tique is an expensive product, requires several steps, & is fairly involved - from the video I watched on how to use Re-tique. However, if ones takes one time, & does all steps correctly, it looks like it turns out very well.
Katie, I have got a cedar chest my brother built in shop class in 1958. I would love to do this to that chest, but I have never done anything with a tool like that. I can only imagine the mess I would make of it! Lol. This is, like everything you do, gorgeous. Thanks for sharing

I love how the box turned out it looks so nice . I have a three drawer chest that my father made for out of a packing crate I think I will paint it like that I have been trying to figure out how to to repaint it for a long time it is stained wright now I have two different sanders which will work fine for this project. I have an old cabinet my dad made some 60 years ago. I was thinking I would sand and stain,but I may try this. I hope to put legs on and use it as a small linen closet❤
This turned out great! I like this technique with battered pieces because it’s so forgiving when your piece has minor damage. In retrospect, could you have left the original wood grain and worked with it and the dents to create the wood grain look, or was there too much damage you needed to sand through?

I have a question. When you pulled the wood grain look through with that tool I saw some large oval target like "knots". In the finished product I don't really see those. I love your finished product and would like to do my front door similar but I don't want those large "knots" showing through. Is it just a matter of smoothing them out or what? Are there choices of the wood grain tools depending on what look you want? Thanks!

It’s definitely a hard enough finish for a table as long as you take care of it. Just like any other furniture surface, you have to be cautious about heat and water.

Hi Katie, I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. We put in our engineered hardwood floors ourselves and glued our floors down as we have a concrete slab on grade base. We accidentally got some of that glue on our floors and it is now dry. In your best opinion, what product would work best to remove the glue without damaging the wood finish? I clean before I start sanding because used furniture is GROSS 😂 and I don’t want to grind and dirt or oils on the surface into the porous wood…cuz then you can’t get it out!
Hi! I used this technique on a dining table top. I used the same water based stain as you and tried the same water based polyurethane finish but as I was applying, it was lifting the stain. It had been dry 24 hours prior so I’m not sure what’s going wrong. Have any suggestions?

Did you toss around the idea of cutting the curves off the apron to modernize it, or did you always know you were going to keep the original base?
NO! I love the bottom curves on this. It’s a feminine piece and they suit it well.

Hi Katie, can I ask why you clean prior to sanding. Why don't you clean after sanding so you don't have to do it twice?

Hmmm. I’m not too sure. I guess if the stain didn’t bond to the paint you could try a spray can of poly to avoid it lifting.
Why use the wood grain tool if you can't see it on the final project after staining?
because you CAN see it and feel it in the finished product
