Would You Do This?

  • Anyone with any experience with ponds will tell you, the number one thing that can be fatal for your pond is having the dam breached by flood or rush water. ‪@SawdustandSweatNC‬ we are fortunate in that a few years ago we were able to build a pond and enjoy all the benefits it provides. Not only is it an excellent source of food, the pleasure derived from the pond environment is virtually priceless. For the past three days the southern US has been the target of a rather severe rain maker called Debby. It made landfall in Florida as a catagory 1 Hurricane. Following a route up through the northern part of Florida then skipping out onto the Atlantic for a brief bit it made a second landfall as a tropical storm just north of Charleston, SC. Extremely substantial amounts of rain was packed into this tropical storm. Concern arose for me as I remembered I had not made sure the drains on my pond were cleared for heavy amounts of water. But after today, I'm feeling really good about my pond situation. Check it out. Thanks

@SawdustandSweatNC how long did it take to dig and did you line it with anything.

@zactillett9820 Contracted a friend to clear the area (pre-sawmill days unfortunately) and build the dam. The soil was perfect for construction. He brought in, I believe it was a Cat D-6, Backhoe, Packer, and Skid Steer. He, along with his helper, as I remember it, were on site approximately 80 hours, it's been a few years so I could be missing this a bit.
Fortunately, we had a good dry spell after they got the dam in so I had a couple of good weeks to chisel around and spot shape and dig as desired. All toll, it probably was around 5 weeks before water began building. My goal was to have full pond covering approximately 1' of the bottom of the boulders shown in the vid. This was my finished elevation goal and fortunately we were able to make it happen, Eve with a little room to spare
