Affordable 1440p Gaming?

  • The last time we looked at the AMD RX 570 we tested it at 1080p. At this resolution it was still more than capable at playing modern games. But what about 1440p? 60 FPS might be too much to ask for, but can this graphics card provide a somewhat playable experience at 2560 x 1440, and how much of a sacrifice must we make to in-game graphics settings?

I advised a friend to get an 8gb 570 a few years back when GPUs were normal prices and I'm so glad I did. It's a mighty impressive card by today's standards considering how old it is and the 8gb memory buffer is allowing it to hang on even longer. Polaris was a really solid product.

Normal prices. Bruh a few years ago the RX 570 8GB cost as much as a GT 1030. They physically could not sell them in my area. Then the GPU shortage hit and suddenly they were selling for hundreds more.

@@xorkatoss for the 30 series I'd wait until closer to the release of the 40 series nearing the end of this year. Likely will be far larger reductions than there are right now. Because at least in my area neither the 3050 or 3060 are even at MSRP and the AMD offerings are far cheaper coz they're below their retail price. Example being the RX6600 is selling for less than the RTX3050 and the RX6600's competitor for its performance is a lot closer to the RTX3060.

Had one of these since mid 2020. The memory modules on these cards are almost always taken from the RX 580(since it has 8GB too), so they can do 2000mhz(stock is 1750mhz). The Polaris architecture is very memory-bound, so by setting the VRAM at 2000mhz, you get a nice performance boost and it will be stable, because the memory modules are rated for 2000mhz. You can gain even more performance and less heat by tweaking the BIOS. Mine now performs like an RX 580 thanks to tweaked memory timings and a slight overclock and undervolt.

I have a used GTX 1080 Ti that I've set to -50% because 250-300 watts is a room heater! :-). At 125 watts it doesn't crash and I get great performance.
I'm just using the card manufacturer software driver which has an "overclock" performance software. I think it's Gigabyte Aorus, might be wrong. I set power to -50%, I think I turned produce up but I'm not sure. I did save 1 - high performance, 2 - up to 20% power boost, 3 - -50% power.
Pleasantly surprised that -50% power works so well in games, really well.
So when people talk about under vaulting and increasing memory performance I believe it now.

@@tourmaline07 The RX 6600 should be only a little less powerful than the Vega 64 so that makes sense. I debated getting one for a revamped build (I only kept motherboard CPU and RAM from old build) because it cost basically the same price as a Xbox Series S at the time and I thought that may be a better deal but honestly I'm glad I went with the 6600 build. It performs MUCH closer to a PS5 (the 6600 xt is actually pretty much on par with a PS5 from what I've seen so the non xt isn't far behind).
It works well with my Ryzen 5 2600 as a super budget 4k and 1800p gaming PC lol.

Hello Dave, I noticed something strange about this video. No big deal, but I still would like to show you, because maybe it is due to the video editing:
As from RDR2 - about 4min 40sec into the video - you show average frame rate numbers above 40 or even 50 FPS. But when you look at the Afterburner, it shows around 20-25 FPS. Same goes for the game which comes after RDR2 in the video... I forgot the title. :-) The video is smooth though, so I guess the average you show is correct indeed. Maybe the afterburner overlay was the wrong one. Maybe it started earlier in the video, I just noticed it as from RDR2.
But thanks for letting me know that my RX570 and RX470 could do 1440p if I decided to buy a screen with that resolution. I currently only have 1080p displays.

I bought one of these (4GB) to replace a dying GTX 970. Mine was marketed as a mining card though and only has a single DVI port capable of early HDMI with an adapter.
Caught it cheap after the last crypto crash.
So it can't drive my 1440p monitor. Sadly. Nice to see what she can still do without that limitation though!

3:15 - Wow. - In my mind, when playing racing-games at a solid 60fps, I've already decided that "Yea, I can see why you'd want at least 120Hz for games like this.". - I mean, you start realizing there's a certain blur at 60Hz. And I've never even seen/used 120Hz/fps refresh-rates, but I know what the effect or difference is supposed to be. - Besides, even before higher refresh-rates than 60/75Hz on LCDs were a thing, I felt that 30fps was just really sluggish for high-action games like racing.

The shadow pop ins in the Spiderman game actually were worse than the web he was swinging from being stuck to an offscreen building that was only three floors tall when he was swinging past it a moment before and he is 8 floors up. Actually scratch that the swinging from a web that always shoots off screen and behind just breaks the immersion because to swing the way he does it needs to be attached ahead to create the swing arc.. and he can swing over 2-3 buildings that are well below him just fine before the game realizes it.

I have a GDDR6 1660 SUPER OC clocked at 2ghz. Usually, what I'll do is super sample. I'll leave the display resolution at 1080p, but I'll turn the internal game rendering up to 1.25x. Maybe 1.5x if the game is a bit older.
This is useful for me because I have a 4k display, but I don't have the power to drive that kind of pixel count. However, with super sampling, I get a cleaner image than 1080p usually produces.

When they were released, they were heaps of crap, but now, after GPUpocalypse, RX Vega 56 actually seems like it could make some sense. At least in my area, AMD RX Vega 56 goes for about 140 euros, or ~20% more expensive than RX570 4GB, which is what I'm currently using. I've looked at few (out of very, very few) tests, and it seems like RX Vega 56 offers about twice the performance of RX570 in games. Maybe it would be a good card for a video?
