  • Finally an easy project that mostly turned out the way I wanted it to. The crank vent on the valve cover was full of oil and rusting and the rubber fittings were either hard, cracking, or soft from oil saturation. So I decided it was time to replace the PCV, crank vent, and some fittings. I got all the parts from Rock Auto for less than $50 and I think it was money well spent. Here are links that I used for our 1977 403. Parts may be a little different on the 455 engine.

My 1976 GMC was equipped with an Edelbrock intake manifold that I had installed in 2013. That addition does raise the air cleaner a bit. The manifold was stolen as were many other parts. I had designed and built a custom engine cover with a three inch lift for the forward 2/3 with a drop back to the floor level at the rear. I have to make another one of these since the thieves took the cover also.

I've seen a couple cool engine cover modifications. I'm sorry to hear about the theft and damage, I hope you get our coach back on the road soon. It's awesome that there are so many of these GMC Motorhomes still being used.

Question, I noticed a clear impression on the air filter housing on the under side of the hatch. Does the hatch make contact with the air housing? Or has the foam/rubber/insulation(?) just been trimmed back leaving the housing outline.
If it makes contact, wouldn't that have a tendency to weaken the housing mounting points as the housing is prevented from moving with the engine as it vibrates?

Hi there, Yes I think the air filter has made contract with the cover. I replaced the body pads last year and this has helped. There is a little space now but I'm not sure how good the motor mounts are so there may be some contact when shifting into drive or reverse.
