  • I've owned a couple of Fiat X1/9s in the past, and ‪@x19australia‬'s channel inspired me to look for another one. After all, they're getting pretty hard to find in nice condition.
I think I lucked out on this one - it's in pretty good shape both mechanically and most importantly, the body is in good shape.

X1/9 with a Dellara wide body kit and a Honda K20 swap.... Poor mans Lancia Stratos. My next project after I finish my Triumph is going to be an X1/9

very cool car, looks stratos ish. i was looking at either a c3 vette, or a mr2, but i guess i can add this to the list of potential project cars. dropped a sub, keep these videos rolling, i love learning about cars ive never heard of.

I once had a chance to drive the car decades ago here in Japan. One thing that scared me was that the breaks were so poor. I am not sure it was a problem only the X19 I drove had or all the X19s had.

The brakes are certainly not spectacular, but in my experience they're decent enough. If you're not used to non-power assisted brakes, they do feel pretty weak though. You have to put noticeably more pressure on the pedal than with most other cars.
That said, the brakes have some weak points that can lead to the calipers partially seizing (mostly if they're not maintained frequently) and that doesn't help braking performance at all.

I have an Arctic Blue 2-Tone '86 of my own with the ugly "Tron" wheels. Still one of my favorites!

Cool. I love the two tone colours on these, especially the proper 1980s hues!

ISTR that fitting a Fiat twin cam derivate engine into these wasn't that uncommon in Europe, especially in the UK as they can just about/barely be fitted.
Problem is that over here in the US, the supply of the FWD twinks pretty much dried up with the Lancia Beta as the later models were never available over here.

...and Toyota seized the opportunity to build a better version - MR-2 , later on Mazda built a better MG sports car called MX 3 / Miata .

They did - it's a pity that Fiat never really developed this car any further, and as you said the MR2 is objectively a better mid engined car.
The X1/9 oddly enough is probably still more practical, plus at least I don't buy classic cars or motorcycles because they're better, but mostly because I like them.
Wouldn't kick a Mk1 MR2 out of the garage, especially a supercharged one, but alas, the garage is full at the moment.

can a 2 liter Lampredi fit in there?

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit  ปีที่แล้ว

I think that was a semi-common modification in the UK at some point, but it's not an easy fit without body modifications. Plus, decent FWD twin cams aren't that easy to find anymore.
There's a kit to K-swap these, but it requires body modifications and this car is way to nice for that.

Heh. The Alfas I'd like are out of the toy budget at the moment :). Plus it's nice to have a good example of one of these as the previous two I owned were in pretty mediocre condition.

Enjoy the X19 , cracking little car.
With unlimited space I'd have one myself...
