I know! My art would be nothing if I didn't use anatomical references! If you were to TRACE the reference then yes, that could be called "cheating" but even the most skilled artists have to see a bowl of fruit in order to draw it!
Wolfie Belle you must have got me wrong. I was saying when people say drawing with refrences is cheating I find it annoying because people draw with refrences to get better and pratice. I do it to and I see nothing wrong with it as long as you dobt claim it 100% yours and say its not done with refrence because thats stealing from the original artist.

One time I threw my drawing on the floor and somebody picked it up and put it on the front of her binder and told everyone that I drew it. Let's just say I got a LOT of money that day.
This new kid would always snatch my sketchbook and wouldn't give it back and it was the most annoying thing. I would be drawing, minding my own business when *FWOOP!* my sketchbook disappears. So one day, when she asked me, "Can you draw me?" I was about to say no when I got an idea. "Sure!" I said and got to work. The next day I gave her an incredibly detailed sketch of a bag of trash, and she was looking at me like ಠ_ಠ. She didn't talk to me again after that and she stopped taking my belongings. (No regrets)

Annoying thing someone said & did: I was casually shading in my flower drawing a specific way with my pencil and this guy said "I took a drawing class in high school once, you have to shade it like this" *grabs drawing and rubs finger over the shaded areas to spread it everywhere* Like dude! Once in the Cafeteria I was drawing a mermaid in my sketchbook, halfway through, my “Friends” were saying things like “Can I see? Let me see! Show it to me!”. At one point they ripped the Sketchbook out of my hands and looked at the drawing. They threw it back in my direction saying “Eww, put some seashells on her or something!” All because in my imagination, a mermaid wouldn’t have a bra because no fish would manufacture them.

My best friend who was really good at drawing always got forced into making drawings for random people at my School because she was quiet and couldn't say no, I understood that she may not wanna draw certain things, her main interest was drawing Anime. I didn't ask for them but she'd always draw me stuff on special events of my life, like my birthday she drew a really cool Attack On Titan art for me for my birthday, which I was so happy about. After that year she moved to Guam, My birthday is November 11 which is in 6 days, I still have her drawing hooked on my wall after a year, I have all of them on my wall, I'll never forget her, and I think we should appreciate the things that people draw for us, that they went out of their way to go draw it for us, money or not, she did a great job and I hope she'll never get forced to draw again. Thought this was a cool story to tell~ ^^

I really dislike it when other people ask 'Why is her hair pink?' Or something of the sort. If they don't look somewhat like a normal person, everyone considers it 'weird'. I also start drawing people with circles, and add the face along the way. They think I'm drawing aliens or something... It's just an art process. I just thought of some of those questions as compliments. Like, "Who are you drawing?" I'd just tell them interested in if they knew the person I was drawing. "You should put the _____ more that way because it looks better." I'd think that would be somewhat constructive criticism. I would be offended if they just said it sucked without any detail behind it. "OMG how do oyu draw so goooooood?" I would tell them I'd put effort into my skills, simple. "Can you teach me to draw so good?" That is a compliment. Because out of everyone they seen draw, they would ask you for advice. And I wouldn't care if someone tried taking my art style, because everyone should know with time everyone develops their own art style. And they might say they were inspired partially because of my art style. "Can you draw me or this thing?" I would just say that I can't really do commissions because I'm not sure if I'm that proffessional, but if they really beg me I would just do it for practice. "*Blocking view* Can you draw me this thing?" I'd kindly say depends on what it is, because I can't really draw as good yet. But I could make an exception. And hopefully it leads to a positive conversation. "Why do you only draw this?" I'd simply say because either the topic of it is interesting, something I want to advance in doing and/or simple practice until I can move on from that point. Dont ever say "Can I see your sketchbook?" if the artist clearly JUST took it out. You might be plugging their creative tubes. Instead, say "can i see what you're drawing" after they have started and THEN ask the former question when they have paused for at least 10 seconds.
I once saw some debate on a picture of some super-detailed drawing about whether art skills are learned or if you're born with them (obviously learned)and some kid that said "Definitely learned, I've been trying for two months and I can't draw like this" -.-
My mum and I have an on going joke about it being a gene that's passed down, but it's definitely a learned skill. (A lot of people on my mother's side do things artistically.) Creativity and brain composition may be hereditary, but determination and drive are learned. :P

I don't hear any of this at cons, because I don't work or sell at cons, but just in general. If I'm at Starbucks, and have my laptop and tablet with me, I'll do some sketches or something, and INEVITABLY, someone will stroll over and ask me to draw them! And there was one guy who wanted me to ANIMATE SOMETHING FOR HIM!!! Not draw...ANIMATE! I was nice to him, because that was a new one, and explained that animation takes a LOT of time, and it's not something I'm too well-practiced in. But that's the sort of thing I usually get. Of course, I do get a few polite people too, who ask if they can watch, and actually DO keep a respectful distance. That is one thing I don't mind. As long as someone doesn't hover over me like Navi from Legend of Zelda, I don't mind an audience.

I feel like this isn't that relevant but it REALLY pissed me off today. So I'm going to rant a little. So I'm on Facebook and i find this article about this 17 yo artist who drew this amazing Demi Lovato art piece of her as a mermaid. The realism in her face and the shading were goddamn glorious. The only thing that was kinda off was the boobs ( cause she was half naked) but overall it was an excellent piece. Then Demi Lovato actually commented saying " its gorgeous but it doesn't look like me" "that isn't my body" "is that how my boobs look?" And everyone started defending her saying "she has the right to be portrayed correctly" It isn't goddamn Photoshop, and the artist isn't getting paid to 'portray' her 'correctly'. Its fan art!! I would understand if the artist was getting paid by Demi, but he wasn't. Plus what made me really mad is that the artist had mentioned that he no longer felt proud of the piece, which is so heartbreaking because it was a really good drawing. I know Demi had eating disorders and maybe she was upset but did she really have to comment and ruin an entire piece which probably took so many hours to do for a 17 yo kid?
I agree, that is disrespectful of her to say. i get criticism because it was of her, but she should be happy that someone took the time and effort to draw her. period. Even when I get a piece of fan art from someone portraying me, I've been very greatful even when the piece was slightly off. That's why I tell others not to worry about what others think.

I was always afraid of doing "fanart", many of the cons have a ratio of original to fanart pieces so I preferred original. I tested it out and make a lot of conversation from it so it made sense. XD

I was also always wondering if there's any special requirements to selling fanart at cons because in reality, it's your work but it's not your character design and if you need a different license or some shit like that? It's a rule at every con but the ratio's very per con. Katsucon may be 70% oc & 30% fan and smaller cons may be 50%x50%. You're allowed to do character fanart but company names and company emblems, etc may not be used due to copyright. (IE: If I drew Zelda, I wouldn't be able to use "Nintendo" anywhere) No license is involved, I have an EIN but that's for tax purposes. You're good. :3

This new kid would always snatch my sketchbook and wouldn't give it back and it was the most annoying thing. I would be drawing, minding my own business when *FWOOP!* my sketchbook disappears. So one day, when she asked me, "Can you draw me?" I was about to say no when I got an idea. "Sure!" I said and got to work. The next day I gave her an incredibly detailed sketch of a bag of trash, and she was looking at me like ಠ_ಠ. She didn't talk to me again after that and she stopped taking my belongings. (No regrets)

My best friend who was really good at drawing always got forced into making drawings for random people at my School because she was quiet and couldn't say no, I understood that she may not wanna draw certain things, her main interest was drawing Anime. I didn't ask for them but she'd always draw me stuff on special events of my life, like my birthday she drew a really cool Attack On Titan art for me for my birthday, which I was so happy about. After that year she moved to Guam, My birthday is November 11 which is in 6 days, I still have her drawing hooked on my wall after a year, I have all of them on my wall, I'll never forget her, and I think we should appreciate the things that people draw for us, that they went out of their way to go draw it for us, money or not, she did a great job and I hope she'll never get forced to draw again.

I just thought of some of those questions as compliments. Like, "Who are you drawing?" I'd just tell them interested in if they knew the person I was drawing. "You should put the _____ more that way because it looks better." I'd think that would be somewhat constructive criticism. I would be offended if they just said it sucked without any detail behind it. "OMG how do oyu draw so goooooood?" I would tell them I'd put effort into my skills, simple. "Can you teach me to draw so good?" That is a compliment. Because out of everyone they seen draw, they would ask you for advice. And I wouldn't care if someone tried taking my art style, because everyone should know with time everyone develops their own art style. And they might say they were inspired partially because of my art style. "Can you draw me or this thing?" I would just say that I can't really do commissions because I'm not sure if I'm that proffessional, but if they really beg me I would just do it for practice. "*Blocking view* Can you draw me this thing?" I'd kindly say depends on what it is, because I can't really draw as good yet. But I could make an exception. And hopefully it leads to a positive conversation. "Why do you only draw this?" I'd simply say because either the topic of it is interesting, something I want to advance in doing and/or simple practice until I can move on from that point.

Dont ever say "Can I see your sketchbook?" if the artist clearly JUST took it out. You might be plugging their creative tubes. Instead, say "can i see what you're drawing" after they have started and THEN ask the former question when they have paused for at least 10 seconds.
I once saw some debate on a picture of some super-detailed drawing about whether art skills are learned or if you're born with them (obviously learned)and some kid that said "Definitely learned, I've been trying for two months and I can't draw like this" -.-
My mum and I have an on going joke about it being a gene that's passed
down, but it's definitely a learned skill. (A lot of people on my

If I'm at Starbucks, and have my laptop and tablet with me, I'll do some sketches or something, and INEVITABLY, someone will stroll over and ask me to draw them! And there was one guy who wanted me to ANIMATE SOMETHING FOR HIM!!! Not draw...ANIMATE! I was nice to him, because that was a new one, and explained that animation takes a LOT of time, and it's not something I'm too well-practiced in. But that's the sort of thing I usually get. Of course, I do get a few polite people too, who ask if they can watch, and actually DO keep a respectful distance. That is one thing I don't mind. As long as someone doesn't hover over me like Navi from Legend of Zelda, I don't mind an audience.

I actually have a thing for thick eyebrows, whether I'm drawing them, or just admiring them from a distance. Seriously though, Karamatsu (from Osomatsu-san) and Satsuki (from Kill la Kill) have some sexy eyebrows.
I hate it when people ask me to draw something just out of no where. I mean I'm not a drawing dispenser. I draw out of inspiration not on what ppl tell me to but if the suggestion is a good idea then i will do it

I feel like this isn't that relevant but it REALLY pissed me off today. So I'm going to rant a little. So I'm on Facebook and i find this article about this 17 yo artist who drew this amazing Demi Lovato art piece of her as a mermaid. The realism in her face and the shading were goddamn glorious. The only thing that was kinda off was the boobs ( cause she was half naked) but overall it was an excellent piece. Then Demi Lovato actually commented saying " its gorgeous but it doesn't look like me" "that isn't my body" "is that how my boobs look?" And everyone started defending her saying "she has the right to be portrayed correctly"
It isn't goddamn Photoshop, and the artist isn't getting paid to 'portray' her 'correctly'. Its fan art!! I would understand if the artist was getting paid by Demi, but he wasn't. Plus what made me really mad is that the artist had mentioned that he no longer felt proud of the piece, which is so heartbreaking because it was a really good drawing.
I know Demi had eating disorders and maybe she was upset but did she really have to comment and ruin an entire piece which probably took so many hours to do for a 17 yo kid?
I agree, that is disrespectful of her to say. i get criticism because it was of her, but she should be happy that someone took the time and effort to draw her. period. Even when I get a piece of fan art from someone portraying me, I've been very greatful even when the piece was slightly off. That's why I tell others not to worry about what others think.
These are some phrases that get on my nerves or annoy me. However, I decided to type them down cause my ipad has no charge and I can't finish my digital drawing. So..........

Man, a lot of people are ignorant towards artists. I could go on for weeks. Lost count how many times my nerves snapped and my eye twitched when somebody said stuff like this to me.
OMGummyBears I draw anime and I hate it when people go... "Draw me in anime form! " or "Draw something which actually looks real". I'm not going to just draw you on the spot it takes me at least an hour to draw a pretty bad drawing and no I'm not just going to change my art style, I'm comfortable with it.
OMGummyBears so, you couldn't in ANY way take the phrase "OMG that's so pretty" as a compliment? seriously, like wtf. so if someone says your drawing is pretty it's offensive? so what if its your worst drawing this month? they find it pretty and you shouldn't be getting on your nerves for constructive or positive criticism.

Well of course I say thank you, but it just gets me a little mad (in my head) that I can do better and I haven't done that, so when I feel like my art could be better, I end up wanting but never actually starting over.

- Almost everyone does this, it's really annoying when i'm drawing and every time someone sees it they're like 'Why can't you draw more realistic?' because maybe they think all artists MUST be like Picasso or so. Only my family and closest friends know my style.

Kay can I just say that I loved the way you described your fanart piece as "conversational"? Shit, maybe something got lost in translation but that is probably the best purpose description for fanart I've ever heard.
I was always afraid of doing "fanart", many of the cons have a ratio of original to fanart pieces so I preferred original. I tested it out and make a lot of conversation from it so it made sense. XD
Yeah, that's why it was so to the point, I guess.
When you say a ratio, is that like.. a con rule? That you can't have more than x percent of fanart?
I was also always wondering if there's any special requirements to selling fanart at cons because in reality, it's your work but it's not your character design and if you need a different license or some shit like that?

It's a rule at every con but the ratio's very per con. Katsucon may be 70% oc & 30% fan and smaller cons may be 50%x50%.
You're allowed to do character fanart but company names and company emblems, etc may not be used due to copyright. (IE: If I drew Zelda, I wouldn't be able to use "Nintendo" anywhere) No license is involved, I have an EIN but that's for tax purposes.

Hahaha, know this too well. One Guy asked me for a Picture, he wanted me to draw his OC, so I asked him to tell me how it looks like. A Artist would tell you all kinds of colors and shapes, would show you Pictures and tell you every single detail, so you know as good as possible how to draw their Character. All he told me was "She is a Elf (Haircolor?Eyecolor?), wears Clothes made of Nature (What is this? Leaves?) and is a bit taller than a dwarf" So, I tried to get more details and asked "Could you please tell me a bit more? Or send me some Pictures, so I know what you have in mind" and in return I got this "Im sorry that I cant write down every singe detail but its simple, just a Elf with Clothes made out of nature. And sorry I cant send you any Pictures, because the only Picture I have is in my head" ..... yeah, now work with that xD

kids at school ask me to draw them and the only reason I say sure is because I need to practice humans, so I'll draw kids every now and then
