    I’m so happy that entire property is still standing amid all of the development surrounding it.

    For me, my context is, my Grandfather was born in 1889. He lived during that transitional time. This project is so cool, and am so looking forward to this. Thanks for the video.

    Having the stabling so unchanged in a developed area like that is astonishing. How fun to see!

    In St. Louis, the horse and carriage houses also had their own underground gas tanks and pumps because gas stations didn’t exist yet. As for repointing, be sure to use Type O on the soft interior brick and Type N on the exterior. My full masonry house is 1903.

    • @jennafarrell4755
      @jennafarrell4755 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What type would you use with new brick on an old house? Have to remake the piers under the columns when house is moved.

    • @maudessen573
      @maudessen573 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jennafarrell4755 Your mason should know how to handle modern brick…it’s probably Type N, which contains Portland. But I only know about old brick like mine. Sorry I can’t really help.

    • @jennafarrell4755
      @jennafarrell4755 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries, just making sure it won’t look too “new!”

    • @maudessen573
      @maudessen573 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jennafarrell4755 You can color the mortar to match the rest of the house. The type of mortar you use has to do with hardness. You don’t want the mortar to be harder than the brick or it will cause the brick to break apart.

    Hey Brent, when you re-tuck the brick are you concerned that the new mortar will be harder than those old bricks and with freeze and thaw cause the brick face to spall off? I've seen that happen before and wondering how you accommodate for that with new mortar? Its an awesome Carriage House by the way.

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, we will match the historic mortar and use lime not portland. The spalting you are describing happens when the mortar is harder than the brick. Our lime mortar is a soft mortar. That is one reason why it is no longer there. Thanks.

    Enjoyed the tour of the main house last week. This was so interesting. You were like a kid in a candy store, and I don't blame you. Those puzzles (what is this and where did it go?) really engage the mind. There are still iron horse tie rings set into the cement curbs in front of several of the 1911-1914 houses up the hill from my street, which was still an orchard in 1925.

    the mortar has to be softer than the bricks. if the mortar were harder than the bricks, then the bricks would fail. i learned this years ago working in the french quarter.

    What kind of mortar are you thinking of using for the repointing? Will you go with an NHL mix mortar or replicate the original mortar exactly?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We will test the mortar to get the exact formula then match exactly. Thx.

    It’s such a stark difference between this property and everything surrounding it. This house has character and vibrancy. Everything surrounding it is bland, soulless and depressing.
