    This is golden material my friend, and you're very generous sharing that. Finished a knife a couple days ago(after a 30 years pause) and now going for the micarta handles. Definitely I'll try your method sooner or later(maybe grinding the mold to get some tiger camo pattern). Subscribed to your channel for this material and also because you're an atheist like me haha.

      Thank you sir, I allready made a video were you can see how it runed out, i would recomend to use some softer paper so you can press it deeper for more contrast :-)

    PVA is water soluble in water so soak the cured assembly and it will separate easier and clean up too.
    Why not use one shaped block and a flat one to press together as you don't see the flat side after attaching to your knife. Slick video thanks

    • @WildStyleWorks
      @WildStyleWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ,yes i konw its water soluble, thank you :-) hte idea of only one shaped block is good, but it will not press the material in such a nice way, since it will compress it in one spot and not compres it in other spots, so the layer thickness would not be same thru the piece ;-)

    • @bigirish4886
      @bigirish4886 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WildStyleWorks Then in place of flat sections cut it in ribbons so it can move around in the mold. Look at how some make marbled Micarta, this will allow the material to fill out the shape of the bottom mold and a flat top. Using the same fabric will give the result you have, with less waste.

    Great job with a very interesting pattern. When you pried those apart I don't think you were wearing safety glasses, I was fearful for you, I have learned the hard way that safety glasses are really a necessary thing in the workshop. All the best with future projects.

    • @WildStyleWorks
      @WildStyleWorks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, if you look close i was wearing them, just not the way they should be worn ;-) when my eyes are endagered i wear my glasses for sure, but in this case it was not necessary becuase i was using very small force to remove the pieces. i had aceton, super glue, metal shavings, wood splitners, stone shrapnell and lots of other stuff in my eyes, thats how i learned it :-) and the thing that burned itself the most into my thoughts (my eyelens) was a very tiny piece of glowing hot scale form a knife i was forging. that was really not comfortableand but a good lecture in wearing glasses. thanks

    • @hardrock1826
      @hardrock1826 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly didn't have the intention of lecturing you, but like you I have caught a few things in my eyes, so perhaps now I'm a little overly cautious. Keep up the good work, very creative, I appreciate learning new techniques, thanks and take care.

    Awesome work ! Man , i´ve a question . I´m using denim or jeans for my micarta and polyester resin . Once it's hardened , it has an awful odor , How do you get rid of that stink ? I think it´s because the styrene monomer gets out but how do you eliminated that ?

    • @WildStyleWorks
      @WildStyleWorks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you, now first of all i dont use polyester resin, i only use epoxy resin, wich has no smell once its cured. polyester resin will allways have that smell to it in the beginning, but i guess it will disapear over time. but normaly you get better results with epoxy resin.

    • @RaulAPPeruRazona
      @RaulAPPeruRazona 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply ! I´ll try the epoxy resin then ! Btw what is the brand that you are using ? i´ll be glad to know because i want to compare it with the resin i´ll buy tomorrow .

      I´m back , thanks for the reply ! I just finished my micarte , i made it with 7 layers of blue denim and transparent epoxy resin . I´ve got one question , when it´s done , it has a white stain on my denim , did you have the same problem before ? or do you know how to get rid of that ?

    • @WildStyleWorks
      @WildStyleWorks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sorry never had such a problem but i guess it is from the dissolvent in your resin. maybe try some other resin. i dont know what else it could be.

  • @royehuckaby335
    @royehuckaby335 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good Technic; have you ever tried using waxed paper between the mold and the micarta?

    • @WildStyleWorks
      @WildStyleWorks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you . that could also work but i dont know how the resin reacts to wax, that could go wrong, i use a PVA-->Poly Venyl Alcohol solution. that works very good and is pretty cheap. and aslo the manufacturer of the resin recommended to use PVA. because its a very good seperating agent.

    • @royehuckaby335
      @royehuckaby335 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wax paper doesn't stick to the molded micarta or the mold as much. Less harsh chemicals also. It is less clean-up too!
      May the LORD GOD Almighty, bless you and keep you; I pray LORD GOD Almighty, make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; and give you Love to Share, Health to Spare, and Friends that Care and Laughter always; it is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside. The LORD GOD Almighty, lift up HIS countenance upon you, And give you peace in Jesus Name, AMEN!

      well....... now you need to know, i am atheist, but thanks for your prayers. i respekt the believes of other people, but i dont realy understand it. i will try out how my resin reacts to wax. but i think next time i make micarta i will make it with linen or cotton because paper is not as flexible.

      i made it my self, its made of a HDPE cutting board and i carved it out with a tungsten carbide bit and a dye grinder. its pretty easy to make if you have a sharp bit. and the other half is made of 2k resin, cast on the HDPE piece so they fit perfect together.

      its a UV-light proof resing i had left over from stabilising. dont know hot its called i guess it was the UV 3200
      but you can use allmost every resin just look for a long worktime. at least 1 hour would be good cause it takes a lot of time to get all layers together
