0:56 "Dies from too much whiskey and leaves me with these three faces to feed. . . . "
That line makes me cry every time I hear it. . . I'm a 72 year old man and it tears my heart out. . . . . every time

What a privilege for every musician on the stage and every person in the audience...almost sacred! I've been to many of James' concerts - at one, it was only him and his guitar, another included his backup singers, etc. Never experienced a full complement of musicians like this, so I'm thrilled to have found this video! God bless you and your talent. James, you've gotten me thru many stages of my life to my old age now. There will never be another you❤❤❤

What a beautiful song, and one that also very much pertains to the plight of the American low wage worker today. I miss the days when music was an art form that also told a story (i.e. Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”) and not the shit that we hear today.

James is one of my very fav artists and I think Millworker might be my fav song by him, it is just so lush and melancholy, the instrumentation are perfect and James vocals are perfect. The bass part is really distinctive here. I really love those twiddle-y bits at the intro. Perfect song. Perfect performance.

    Millworker
Now my grandfather was a sailor
He blew in off the water
    My father was a farmer
    And I, his only daughter
Took up with a no good millworking man
    From Massachusetts
Who dies from too much whiskey
And leaves me these three faces to feed
    Millwork ain't easy
    Millwork ain't hard
    Millwork it ain't nothing
    But an awful boring job
    I'm waiting for a daydream
To take me through the morning
And put me in my coffee break
Where I can have a sandwich
    And remember
Then it's me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
For the rest of the afternoon
And the rest of my life
Now my mind begins to wander
To the days back on the farm
I can see my father smiling at me
    Swinging on his arm
I can hear my granddad's stories
Of the storms out on Lake Eerie
Where vessels and cargos and fortunes
    And sailors' lives were lost
Yes, but it's my life has been wasted
And I have been the fool
    To let this manufacturer
Use my body for a tool
I can ride home in the evening
    Staring at my hands
Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl
Ought to stand a better chance
So may I work the mills just as long as I am able
And never meet the man whose name is on the label
it be me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
And the rest of the afternoon
Gone for the rest of my life

Music and Theatre Lesson if you care...
Studs Terkel wrote a book, I believe an Oral History, much like EDIE, about Edie Sedgwick, but maybe not. Anyway, Studs’ book is called called WORKING, where he interviewed "regular people" about their jobs. It was turned into a musical of sorts as there was not one lyricist and one librettist, but many contributing songwriters. James Taylor wrote this song for the musical from the point of view of a female who works in a factory and "never meets the man who's name is on the label". Just a little background about the song and its journey to all of us.
