Absolutely. One of those records that's greater by far then the sum of its individual parts. And the gong-crash at the very end of Nights In White Satin has a lot less significance when heard in isolation from the opening of the album.

“Question” is very much a US influenced war protest song from the Vietnam era that Justin wrote. Actually two separate works in the same key that, when merged, became both a soldier’s heartfelt lament and primal scream all in one epic tune. 💙💙💙💙💙

My Brother-in-Law helped them with their equipment when they first started out in Erdington, UK back when they were known as the MB5 (named after a brewery Mitchell and Butler's! He knew them very well; they are stunning musicians. After Justin wrote Tuesday Afternoon, he was here in S. FL for a few performances, and I met up with him, and have photos from that performance in the old Borders bookstore on the intracoastal, which they laid out like a massive living room, with wonderful couches and places to sit and enjoy Justin with his new solo. They are awesome people, and an awesome group.

Amber, your and my souls are so intertwined when it comes to heart-moving music. The music, the orchestration is important to a song, but if there are words, then there is a story to be told, a feeling to understand, a lesson to be learned, or a knowledge to impart. I challenge people all the time to not just listen to the band, although the band can start and direct the journey, but to really focus on what is being sung, or spoken. The deeper the message the more the soul responds and resonates. But if the message is missed, then the story is lost to that soul.

This is the song that really grabbed my attention the most and introduced me to this band. I was born in 85 so wasn't around for their inception, but my mom was a fan and used to play a tape of theirs that was recorded at a live show they did with a full orchestra backing. I'm sure i heard others before this one, but this was the one where i was officially enraptured.
It actually goes on a fair amount longer than this too with musical interludes... it's one of those albums where you can't really tell where one song ends and the next begins.

Jay's expression upon learning what ENT stands for: priceless...
Good ear Amber. The Moody Blues is a progressive band. Particularly with the release of this album "Days of Future Past". Prior to that they were part of the British Invasion with another lead singer & their 1st hit "Go Now." That singer Denny Lane (who passed away last year, went on to play with Paul McCartney in Wings. I recommend listening to "The Voice" & "The Story In Your Eyes".

My all time favorite is from the album, "In Search of the Lost Chord". called "The Actor". Incredibly moody (hee hee) & the flute arrangement is so beatiful. Even if you don't react to it, check it out. Love you guys!

The wildest thing is how the band finally made it. The song "Nights in White Satin" is longer than the normal back in the day so no radio station would play it. One DJ wanted to go outside the studio and have a smoke, so he knew the song was long and it would be just long enough for him to finish it. The next day so many people called in and requested it that they had to add it to their playlist and the rest is history. (This is pretty much the abridged version but all the facts are there)

This is from Days of Future Passed, one of those albums that is like one, long magnificent song you have to hear all the way through. The Moodys were mystical and psychedelic masters.

They were one of the first British Invasion bands, and they became progressive with a symphonic feel to a lot of their music. Very superlative band.

Justin Hayward, the singer here, had one of the finest voices to come out of 60s Britain, particularly for romantic material. "Voices In The Sky" and "The Actor" bear this out.
There were three other lead singers/songwriters in the band as well. Try "Legend Of A Mind" for flutist Ray Thomas, "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band" for bassist John Lodge, and "Lost In A Lost World" for keyboardist Mike Pinder. Pinder played the mellotron, a keyboard which triggered tape loops of strings or flute sound....that's what makes those "strings" sounds you hear. Moody Blues LPs tended to be divided up almost equally among the five bandmembers on songs and vocals. (Drummer Graeme Edge preferred poetic recitations.)

Love the Moody Blues and love your reaction channel! You always make smile. The Moody's have so many great tunes and have done many videos with full orchestras. I would really like to see your reactions to Departure/Ride My Seesaw and/or Question. It is wonderful watching you expose yourselves to music with which you were unfamiliar. My generation was blessed by killer music!

Quick bio of the Moody Blues:
The classic lineup of the band from 1966-1978 included:
Justin Hayward - guitar and vocals
John Lodge - bass and vocals
Ray Thomas - flute and vocals
Mike Pinder - keyboards and vocals
    Graeme Edge - drums
This lineup recorded 8 albums together with the 7 albums from 1967-1972 being considered the “core 7”. These albums had the more orchestral sound with thought provoking lyrics.
Instruments listed are their main instruments however they played a multitude of instruments on their albums. All 5 members wrote songs with Edge providing poetry for many of their albums. Tracks on the albums were split pretty evenly between all members. All 4 vocalists sang lead vocals.
As the group moved into the 80s they developed a more electronic sound with Hayward and Lodge taking over most of the songwriting.

This is from another "concept album" that were popular in the day. The album is "Days of Future Past" and is real enjoyable for a continuous listen (ideally back porch, rainy day, whiskey in hand). Here's how the album breaks down:
    A1 The Day Begins
A2 Dawn: Dawn Is A Feeling
    A3 The Morning: Another Morning
    A4 Lunch Break: Peak Hour
B1 The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?) / Time To Get Away
B2 Evening: The Sun Set: Twilight Time
B3 The Night: Nights In White Satin

The Moody Blues emerged as a pivotal force in the British rock scene during the mid-1960s, amidst the era of the British Invasion. Initially drawing from rhythm and blues influences, they swiftly evolved their sound into a distinctive blend of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and symphonic elements.
During the 1960s, their groundbreaking album "Days of Future Passed" (1967) exemplified their innovative approach, fusing orchestral arrangements with rock instrumentation, epitomized by the timeless hit "Nights in White Satin." This era also witnessed the release of memorable tracks like "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)" and "Ride My See-Saw," solidifying their status as pioneers in the psychedelic and progressive rock movements.
Transitioning into the 1970s, The Moody Blues continued to push boundaries with albums such as "On the Threshold of a Dream" (1969) and "A Question of Balance" (1970). Tracks like "Question," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Isn't Life Strange" showcased their versatility and lyrical depth, resonating with audiences worldwide.
As the 1980s dawned, The Moody Blues adapted to evolving musical trends while maintaining their signature sound. Hits like "The Voice," "Gemini Dream," and "Your Wildest Dreams" reflected their willingness to experiment with new styles while staying true to their roots.
In the 1990s, The Moody Blues experienced a resurgence, marked by the success of albums like "Keys of the Kingdom" (1991) and the chart-topping single "I Know You're Out There Somewhere." Tracks such as "Say It with Love" and "Bless the Wings (That Bring You Back)" showcased their enduring relevance and ability to connect with audiences across generations.
Throughout the 2000s and beyond, The Moody Blues maintained a loyal fan base and continued to tour and release albums, though their commercial success waned. Nevertheless, their impact on rock music, particularly during the British Invasion, remains undeniable, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential bands of their era.

I was introduced to the moodies in 1971 while stationed at Ft Sill, OK. Most of my friends were combat medics, back from Vietnam. We had an apartment in town where a lot of us hung out.
Two of the guys had fantastic reel-to-reel systems they had brought back from Vietnam, and plenty of Moody Blues tapes. We used to blare them out after work, and get high, on pot and psychedelics.. A wonder none of us got busted. When I got out of the Army got my own music which included both the Moodies first seven albums, and a lot of early Pink Floyd. Went back home, back to college, but never will forget those years and the wonderful friends I had and what we all went through.

No one sounds like the Moody Blues! "Nights in White Satin" (extended version) and "Tuesday Afternoon" are 2 of my favorite songs of all time. (I don't believe this video was made for this song). You must give a reaction to their "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band". Amazingly great and shows their genius even further.
