I’m from Florida and grew up three doors down from Tom, he was friends with my oldest brother who was murdered in 2001 on September 1st. So to me I was a bit numb when 911 happened. But Tom showed up at his funeral as I had messaged him to let him know. He and my brother played music together in school and he was at our house all the time growing up. He showed up to my brother’s funeral and came in and we sat in the back corner of the funeral home and he sat with me talked about my brother for a solid two hours. Every time he came to Gainesville we always saw him and he would come over and we’d talk and laugh for hours. I tell people this and you always get the same thing. Oh man he’s so cool to just hangout With normal people. But to us he wasn’t “Tom Petty” rockstar. He was just Tom, the guy who got me high my very first time on an old dirt road as he and my brother would hit that road to roll up a J and get stoned. I say this because when he came to my brothers funeral and he hid in the corner w/me wearing his shades and an old hat looking more like a bum that walked in than a superstar. But that’s just the guy he was. He didn’t want to distract people from my brothers funeral and he wasn’t even going to come because he didn’t want that at his funeral with my mother there and her son in a casket and people just focusing on him. My mother said she’d never forgive him if he didn’t come. So when he had n9 choice he agreed. My mother didn’t let anyone but immediate family come because she understood. So we had a service and then sat around talking about the good times and how crazy my brother was. Two days later my mother went up to the funeral home to pay them. But it had been taken care of, Tom paid for the entire service, paid for everything and never said a word. That was the type of man the real Tom Petty was. He was good to people he cared about. I saw him about four or five months before he passed. During that conversation he thanked me for my friendship. He told me that he knew at least between him, me and my brother that he knew he had at least two true friends. I asked him why he would say that? He said this “in all the 60 plus years we have known each other, you, your brother and your family, have none ever asked me for a single thing,” he said when he got famous all the people that had been his friends from childhood all acted as if he owed them something because they knew him. I told him, that’s because they where friends. You and me, we are brothers! And your brother you don’t have to ask for anything. Because he’s going to know what you need.. but i told him I had to prove him wrong that I did want something once. this girl I had a huge crush 9n in 11t( grade loved his music. So to try worming my way in her pants(I was young and dumb ok) but I asked him for an autograph for her.. he laughed and asked “did it work? Did it get you laid” hell yes I told him. Then I asked him, how did you know what it was for? And he seriously said “brother don’t have to ask for things, they know what you need” God I miss my two brothers!! Every day..

I've always liked this song & Keith Urban, with what he does performing. I'm not a huge country fan but, gotta recognize talent when you see it. He performs everything & anything, with the possible exception of opera. (HA!)
I am a huge Tom Petty Fan and this is one of my favorites by him and being an even bigger Stevie Nicks fan her version is fantastic too, but this one is AWESOME!!! I love my Keith Urban and he proves here that he is the real deal.
This literally made me tear up due to onions in front of me and definitely not because of the amazing rendition of one of the greatest rock songs of all time. @tompetty would be proud.
This is probably the best version I have ever heard of this song, the accent is Aussie, since he is one naturally. Musicaly it´s great. Why he´s not taking the high note in this song is because of 2 things, first he wants to let his fellow guitarist get a little shine and also he has a very long tour and he wants to save his voice since he sings so many songs totally. But I guess you have to have been on tour to understand that!
8:25 is awesome! (It all is actually.) I remember him doing this when opening for Kenny around 2004 at RFK Stadium, he had us all up and singing it too.
Yes absolutely awesome. It’s such a delight watching him. How are you doing. Hope you are fine and staying safe out there. I am Eric. Where are you watching from?
@cannonboll a modulation is another word for key change.. that wasn't a key change. I would agree with you if there were some continuity.. like he did it somewhere else in the song.. also considering the fact that that isn't in the original Tom Petty song.. accentuating an unusual note in the chord for a single quarter note of the song hardly constitutes as "artistic interpretation".
@mcchick49:I disagree!!! well performance wise this was better but song wise john's performance was the best better than the original aswell.... and Im a keith and john fan too.... and i Just love Keiths voice!!! :D
No, this a cover of the late great Tom Petty. John Mayer went on to cover it with his interpretation of the song. This is a tribute to the original written by Petty 🤘🏻
@nvcfc18 what's funny about this one is that he hardly did anything different to it.. he almost played exactly as the record.. except Keith Urban is way fuckin cooler than Tom Petty so that made it cool enough as it is! lol

Don't know any Keith Urban songs, but this is a good cover.
the model of guitar is a Fender Stratocaster in Ebony and White that Urban is playing in this clip.
Fantastic Cover ..... and live at the Wiltern Theater in LA

It´s not a fuck up, it´s just a modulation since this song has the same chords over and over again to make it sound a bit different.
