For a variety of reasons the film didn't perform that well in the box office originally but over time became a cult classic that's earned the praise of celebrities, actors, film critics, and audiences world wide for decades. It was even nominated for 7 academy awards and sits comfortably on almost every top list of films. It was even added to the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress for being so exceptional.

It was one of Stephen King's stories in his book Different Seasons, a four story back, under Hope Spring's Eternal. The name was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. This, and Green Mile, a miniseries of books by Stephen King, are two of the best prison movies.
Probably deliberate, but when Brooks is released the shot still shows the prison. When Red is released, it shows the outside. Very clever. Great reaction.

The movie is about both of them. They are polar opposites of each other, yet they needed each other. Andy is innocent and Red is guilty. Andy has hope and Red does not. Andy has the strength to keep his mind free and Red does not. If it weren't for Andy, Red would have never regained hope and the will to live.
I'm making a movie about a rogue cook who serves sub par meat in his restaurant. He finally reforms his ways. I call it "The Flank Steak Redemption". No studio has bought the script yet. Seriously, I have never been "into" prison films, but I truly believe that this is one of the best movies ever released.
When this movie came out in the cinema's, there wasn't much inerest. But when it was put for rent and shown on the tv, millions of people watched it and liked it and that how it became the best movie ever made.
Every once in a while I’ll learn something new I didn’t see before in one of my favorite movies. From your reaction video, I learned that 1) the justice system - more importantly, the surveillance system - has made it nearly impossible to get away with what Andy and Red were able to, (as a caveat, it’s probable that there’s a new way to escape Big Brother’s eyes, but it’s certainly not the same) and 2) a very realistic explanation for how/why Red was able to remember the name of the town Andy had mentioned. Shit, right before I watched your reaction, I’d seen another, and the guys were joking about if Red hadn’t been able to remember that name - it’s something I’ve always thought, “How in the everloving f could anyone remember that name?” and y’all NAILED it. Of course Red would remember it so immediately, because there would be so little that would differ from the day-in/day-out routine - you’d remember very well anything that wasn’t a part of that. Very cool. Thanks, you two! Your reaction has been so enjoyable for me. I am glad to have seen it!
Not only do schools look like prisons, they feel like one too. A place you are forced to waste a good chunk of your life learning pointless and useless curriculum. I recall when leaving school I learned more in the month following than I did 3 years prior. At least this was the case in the 80's/90's. Nowadays it seems like schools/universities are more interested in telling you what to think instead of teaching exercises that make you think for yourself.
Learning to read, write, think critically, and socialize in a variety of ways is not a waste. Perhaps you went to a terrible school with little opportunity. But schools are only as good as the community they are in. So look around your community and see what’s wrong if you are so unhappy.
Great reaction guys, thank you. Fresh fish, reeling em in... That was Morgan's son, as was his picture on his jacket. One of Stephen Kings' best nonsupernatural books written. There was also a deleted scene in this movie, where during lights out on the day Red finds out Andy escaped, he was laughing super hard. Got 2 weeks in the hole for it
That was one of the best scenes in the book. After the tunnel was discovered, they sent a skinny guard in to find out what happened, and he could be heard saying, "Smells like sh!t...oh sh!t, it IS sh!t!..." and puking up his guts. Red fell down laughing, and Norton promptly sent him to solitary...but Red didn't mind, because he'd just think of it and start laughing all over again. That scene was filmed...but fell flat with test audiences. Frank Darabont figured out why...as well-liked as that scene was in the book, it just didn't work onscreen, because once the audience saw that tunnel, they wanted to know how Andy did it, not take a five-minute detour with some character they'd never met. It worked a lot better with the poster being ripped off the wall...then smash-cut to the police cars racing towards Shawshank.

Clancy Brown is the sweetest man on the earth. I know he played the head guard in Shawshank, but I was fortunate to know him personally. His brother and my ex played division 1 football together. He couldn't be at the games all the time, but he was like a big brother to me when he could be at the games. He was great! Clancy Brown is underrated at what I am an amazing actor and person he really is!
@@patrickbateman7369 That's true of a lot of actors who regularly play villains. From what I hear, most of them are great people IRL. My theory is that they get to exorcise the dark side of themselves in their performances, where it doesn't hurt anyone.

Great reaction you two! I'll offer some info on one of the things you said. You said Andy's wife should've just divorced him and that is in fact what she wanted, but back then, unless there were extreme circumstances like obvious signs of physical abuse, the man not making a living, the woman not being able to get pregnant, etc you needed the consent of both partners to get a divorce. It wasn't until the 80's that only one person was needed to get divorce proceedings started.
Watching so early from Aotearoa New Zealand, I was 23rd Like. I really admire the symbolism of the Warden snatching the unfinished cigarette out of the kids mouth, a young life stubbed out too early.....
Great reaction guys to a great movie one of my top 10 movies of all time and I have watched over 2500 movies in my lifetime. Just a few facts about the movie and info. 1. When Andy meets Redd for the first time in the yard, he asked him why they call him Redd, he tells him maybe because I’m Irish. The reason was the part of Redd was to be played by a white guy who was going to be Irish and his last name was Redding, but in the end Morgan got the part and the director kept that line in.. maybe because I’m Irish… so Redd was short for Redding. 2. The young photo of Morgan in the beginning, was a photo of his real son. 3. His son is also in the movie for one scene and that was or he was the guy behind the fence doing the fishing pole gesture with a hat on. 4. The posters of different women was a sign of time passing and years. 5. When Brooks is let out of prison, as he steps out, you see the guards behind him. This represents that he was still stuck or trapped in the same place. That’s why he killed him self. 6. When we see Redd leaving, you see the guards are in front of him as he steps out, meaning he was free. 7. The ending of the movie was Andy driving away with the top rolled down. When it was shown to a test audience they did not like it, they wanted Andy and Redd to reunite… so they went back and shot that ending on the beach as we see… that makes the movie complete. Another great movie from the same director and one of my top 5 movies of all time that you guys should watch and react to is The Green Mile…. Both movies are from Steven King Novels…. Thank you.
Morgan freeman and Tim Robbins were perfectly cast for this movie.
They used Morgan Freeman’s son for Red’s mugshot.
He is also one of the prisoners cheering the arrival of "Fresh Fish" at the beginning.

“Remember Red hope is a good thing maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies”. That quote always sticks with me ❤❤❤❤❤. Love y’all.
In the book, Red IS irish. Thats the joke. But.... its Morgan Frickin Freeman! They couldn't have cast that role better.
Yeah!
Also, the redemption is Red's, not Andy's. It's in the title (REDemption), and he's the one narrating.
I get what you're saying, but it's a little bit of injected levity when Morgan Freeman says it, it's a nice touch to put life in the character.
The Shawshank redemption is one of the best movies ever. Sadly, it was robbed of Oscar.
You can blame Tom hanks and Forrest for that one!
Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, and Forrest Gump all came out the same year. Any of them could have won best picture, Forrest Gump took home the award. All 3 are phenomenal movies
Not robbed, 1995 had some of the most iconic movies in history competing and Shawshank came out later in the award season and wasn't overly promoted.

Another little touch,,, in the time,,,, Red rode on the BACK of the truck and the back of the bus. Andy's hammer was hidden in Exodus! The escape or deliverance.
The movie is not about Andy. It's about Red. He is the one redeemed in Shawshank. Andy didn't need to be redeemed, he was innocent.
Interesting.. never saw it that way!
Yes, I think Andy helped redeem Red, by giving him hope again and ultimately saving him from ending up like Brooks.
I don't know if he was a alcoholic or was just drunk that night but either way it got helped him stopped drinking if you want to count that.
Maybe its about the warden?
When Red tells Andy going to Mexico was “shitty pipe dreams”, it foreshadows Andy crawling through a pipe of shit to escape.
Yeah, that's right. I like how the first cut out page of the many cut out in his Bible to hide his rock hammer is in the Book of Exodus.

The way she looked at you when you said yahh when she asked, love you two.. :-)
my daughter was on vacation near the Mexican town Zihuatanejo mentioned in the movie since the movie's release it has become a stop for tourists
Sweetest man!??? You must not know him
@@patrickbateman7369 That's true of a lot of actors who regularly play villains. From what I hear, most of them are great people IRL. My theory is that they get to exorcise the dark side of themselves in their performances, where it doesn't hurt anyone.
1 of the best movies ever made.
Really enjoyed the reaction, new subscriber here. I wish more people edited the way you guys do. That 50/50 screen is the way to do it. Never understood these reactions where the movie screen is tiny.. I ain't trying to see their boring ass wall taking up 75% of the screen when I'm watching on the small screen of my phone! Thank you for the content now I can see what else y'all have put out there. 😎👍💯🔥
But y'all liiiiiiiieeed.... You absolutely thought Andy did it up to the point Elvis JR said he'd heard from the real killer ehat happened! 😂😆
That was great y’all 😊thank you for sharing 😊👍✌️🇺🇸
Brooks had family, he murdered his wife and daughter after losing all his money during a gambling binge.
Shawshank is at N°1 as best movies of all time on IMDB. It was directed by Frank Darabont who also did The Mist and The Green Mile both based on Stephen King books. This movie was based on the short story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King which can by found in the Diffirent Seasons book. And Tim Robbins is 6"5. Same height as Michael Jordan 😂
One of my favorite movies. I watched this when it came out.
The original title of the book was, Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption. The movie is actually about Red, not Andy.
Fun fact: they have a music/tattoo festival there every summer. There is also a new prison right next to where this one is.
Fun fact the pic in Reds book is actually Morgan Freeman own son!!! And i loved yalls reaction you showed a lot more of the movie and yall made sense out of shit other people didn't seem to get at times!! Thanx
Fun fact Captain Hadley is Clancy Brown The guy who voices Mr Krabs

Great reaction
30:41 😂I hope if they do a parody or remake of this movie in a modern setting they do this scene to that song. 🎶 Excellent.
Great Reaction!
1:00:35 Nat had me cracking up talking about the thing Andy left for Red being a Jack-in-the-box. Imagine that being the big payoff? 😂
I love your commentary throughout the movie. Made it more interesting.
Love it🎉❤ happy for full reaction, 🫶🏻 from Prague, CZ
Tim Robbins (Andy Dufresne) is 6'5" tall.
I love the fact you put F the police in ... When expecting to hear a operatic woman...... It sparked my brain it was awesome I would love to see him scratching the record... Hilarious And I needed a laugh
"He got the castaway 7's on". Lol
Hahaha that side eye with sound effects was fuuuuuhkin' spot on. Real.
ETA: "what if he was under there",...hahahaha shit made me laugh
ETAagain: The Cast Away Sevens! Hahaha, the banter betweens yous twos, the quips and the cuts just add to the realness and enjoyment.
Peace and blessings
I don't comment much at all but I have to tell you I loved your reaction. It's my first time here but not my last . God bless you both.
This is the first reaction video of yours I watched and I was not disappointed. Glad you loved this great movie.
I would love to see your reaction to Pulp Fiction. Samual Jackson was amazing and the story is quite an adventure.
thank you so much!!! We’ve seen Pulp Fiction already! wish we hadn’t ! would had been great to to react to
Great reaction thank you
Thank u! Finally, someone who didn't flinch at the thought of going thru rhe sh¡t pipe! 😅😅 The number of ppl who say "o no. I could never!" Yes, u could! Think about it! I know i could climb thru 5 more if i knew i was for eure getting out on the other side!
Amazing story by Stephen King, incredible directing by Frank Darabont 👏
I would recommend The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.
Dai is smart and emotionally intelligent. Refreshing to see reactors like this :)
❤❤
" snuffed " out too early. Just FYI
😢@@Dai.Natreacts the money he got from the banks would be around $3.5m today
@philosopher0076 in my mother tongue the phrase to stub out a cigarette is really used. Of course other verbs or colloquialisms are valid too.
21:05 Hadley didn't really do this for Andy, it was because without him the money stopped flowing. They did it to send a message that he is protected.
Thank you.
