Stargazer is a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar built in 1974, that was modified in 1994 for use by Orbital Sciences (now part of Northrop Grumman) as a mother ship launch pad for the Pegasus launch vehicle. As of October 2022, 45 rockets (containing nearly 100 satellites) have been launched from it, using the Pegasus-H and Pegasus-XL configurations. As of 2023, Stargazer is the only L-1011 airframe still airworthy.
The first Pegasus launch to use Stargazer was conducted on 27 June 1994 as the maiden flight of the Pegasus-XL. Previous launches used the NASA-operated Boeing NB-52B Balls 8, which was also used for four subsequent launches, as the original Pegasus could not be launched from Stargazer due to clearance issues. A modified version, the Pegasus-H, was introduced to rectify this.
Stargazer was also used for captive tests and transportation of the X-34 hypersonic research aircraft; however, drop tests used Balls 8. Orbital Sciences also offer the aircraft for research flights.] It is capable of carrying a 23,000 kilograms (51,000 lb) payload to an altitude of 12,800 metres (42,000 ft).
Pegasus launches using Stargazer are usually conducted from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Launches have also been conducted from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the NASA Kennedy Space Center, the NASA Wallops Flight Facility and from launch sites outside the US: Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands and Gando Airport in Spain.
    In 2010, Stargazer was reengined with 50,000 lbf (220 kN)-thrust Rolls-Royce RB211-524B4 turbofans to replace its original 42,000 lbf (190 kN)-thrust RB211-22Bs.
2015, Stargazer was repainted to reflect Orbital Sciences' merger with Alliant Techsystems.
On 15 December 2016, Stargazer successfully launched CYGNSS on behalf of NASA on its second attempt. The first attempt on 12 December was scrubbed due to issues with the hydraulic system responsible for separating the Pegasus rocket from the launch aircraft.[9]
Stargazer appeared in Northrop Grumman livery in 2018 following the acquisition of Orbital ATK.] Stargazer launched the Ionospheric Connection Explorer on 11 October 2019. The launch was originally scheduled for June 2017 but was scrubbed when an anomalous piece of vehicle data was observed during a ferry flight. The data was related to the rudder position of the Pegasus XL rocket and was observed during a routine in-flight vehicle health check. The launch was delayed multiple times from 2017 to 2019, finally occurring October 11, 2019.
As for the future of the last airworthy TriStar? Well, its 50th birthday is coming up in 2024.

Those are some very healthy RB211 engines to not be putting out hardly any smoke on start up! Love the low rumble they make when fuel is introduced into the engines and at ground idle. Miss working on these things. Worked the Delta L-1011s in the mid-90s before they were retired.

Would love to hear more info on rb211. I like how advanced the L1011 was. This is a good video. Would the rb211 be considered a low bypass turbo fan or hi bypass? It’s a big cowling on them. It was the previous comment about smoke I was confused about. By my limited understanding it’s typically low bypass engines that creat that. But what do I know. I just enjoy watching planes. Thanks

Purely majestic, OMG, how I love the L-1011.
As a kid flying between Trinidad and London to go to school in Oxford, BWIA flew that bird.
My stepmother was a senior F/A, and I got to sit many times in the cockpit for take off and landings.
Now that I am a pilot, I wish I could fly it once as a bucket list item, but I do know that's impossible.
Take to the sky's my dear lady L10 and be as glorious as the days you served the airlines of the world.

Back in 1982 I flew in an Air Canada L-1011 from Montreal to Calgary, and it was the nicest flight I've ever been on. Smooth, roomy, quiet, it was a joy to fly in. They really should bring them back, it was better than anything Boeing currently has.

Anytime an L10 takes to the skies these days is an extraordinary historic occasion. Great job being there and capturing history! As you probably already know, this is the last fully airworthy L10 anywhere in the world. This aircraft is the only survivor! One element of this aircraft I remember as a kid, was the earth shaking engine starts. Could never get enough of them. With that said I was wondering if you by chance have the other two engine starts videod from this event. Looks like you edited a beautiful video, and I think it’s great, but if you have all three engine starts in succession, myself and other L10 start addicts would greatly appreciate seeing it. Doesn’t need an edit, just first through third. Thanks in advance if you can accomplish that!!

Hi, a really lovely video of the last of a truely great aircraft. I live just down the road from the airfield in the UK where the last six RAF Tristar's flew into a few years back now. There was high hopes they would be bought and ferried back the America but after many years in the open they all got scrapped, leaving this one in your video the only one left. I hope this one flies on for many more years to come.................Now if you could get a flight on it, how awesome would that be! All the best Dave.

Very nice to see the TriStar still flying.
Such a magnificent and elegant airliner.
She may be old but she's still technically probably on par with todays airliners.
Boeing praised the dimmable windows on the Dreamliner as significant....
The TriStar had this feature already tested and installed some good 30+ years before...
I dont know if this was installed in airline service but it existed already.
Lockheed was much ahead of time with the TriStar.
I wish the last of these beautiful ladies many more flights so that we enthusiasts can cherish more videos with that magnificent sight and sound

Sadly this plane is in the process of having its interior removed and converted into a cargo plane. From my understanding the reason there are none of these L1011s flying is because there are no spare parts and the parts that are available are cost prohibitive. Combined with the high cost of maintenance on the L1011s this wont last very long as a cargo operator either... it will be parked or scrapped in the very near future.
Thankfully the Air Museum in Kansas City and the old Downtown airport has saved one of the last flying L1011 ans plans on preserving it.

OMG! Who ever created this video does really know how to irritate viewers! So many cuts and black flashes.
It took the flavor of the Tristar memoirs away 😢

I believe the creator has really good patience, based on that reply. No need for that negativity @ricardoallen4381. Did you pay for his content? Could you please explain your L10 memoirs to us…? (Or the flavours 🤯)
