  • I attempt to find out how hard it is to "Everest" (virtually) on Zwift, trying to climb over 8800 metres which is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest on a bike... apparently. How hard can it really be?

That's Mad. Looking at your old videos feels like watching a different person. Hearing you say you are 96kg was amazing considering where you were not 2 years ago. Congrats on the weight loss and thanks for the inspiration to follow. As a 115kg new road cyclist myself I love seeing your progression. Keep it up.

GREAT JOb..... I focused on exact watts 185,188,191,194,197 etc.....negatively splitting the effort....all be it starting quite low.....finished with PLENTY in my legs....returned 2 weeks later to finish the 10,000 m challenge. The focus on wattage was what helped keep me engaged. Love your attitude.

A massive acheivement! You did almost a 1/2 Everest, and that's no joke. If you do this again in warm weather, Ryan, maybe consider having a couple of water bottles on hand that are filled with ice water. When you start overheating, dump some water on yourself. The cold water will soak your t-shirt, which in turn will keep you cooler, especially if you keep the fan going.

Good effort Ryan! The thought of doing an everest without any preperation at all seems a bit bonkers to me 😂
I don't know if your daughter is right and you will attempt it again this weekend but a couple of tips for your next attempt:
One simple thing: you can do a turnaround with the Zwift Play controller (down button on the left).
Change your clothes. Last time I switched shirts after every climb and shorts after every other climb. It makes a HUGE difference in comfort.
Regarding food: you'll probably have to figure out a lot for yourself because everyone is different, but for me it was a big mistake to rely mostly on normal food just because you can easily get of the bike on the downhill. I almost quit my first attempt because I couldn't stomach it. After I switched to gels and bars it was much better.
Good luck next time, you can do it!

If I could add my two cents here, saddle cream or butt cream, or whatever you want to call it is a lifesaver on long rides. I think Assos makes the best. After many solo 24 hour races, I am well-placed to make a recommendation.

Way to go, Ryan! The hardest part of everesting is flipping the mental switch from “that’s impossible” to “maybe i could do that”. Now that you’ve cleared that hurdle, it’s just a matter of improving everything (all the things you described at the end) a bit until you get there. 💪

I’ve been training for unbound XL for the last long while and one thing that has helped me was to just eat something or take a bite of something every 5 minutes. It’s basically like a buffet on a bike! But for me giving a 5 minute rule helped me to eat more. Cause sometimes I’m on the bike having so much fun that I just forget to eat and an hour has already gone by!

Did the 1st climb at Z3/Z4 , 2nd at Z3 and 3rd + 4th at high Z2 , i prepared a lot of waterbottles , half of them with electrolytes and the other with carbs or water with gels , than Haribos , cookies and powerbars , changed bibs , jersey and cycling shoes , spinned my legs out on the downhills for a bit

Hi Ryan, brave man for attempting this! Haven't finished watching yet, but keep wondering if you've had a bike fit? Even some minor adjustments might make it easier to spend those long hours in the saddle. Speaking of which, a saddle with a relief channel can also be a massive help. And chamois cream!

Everesting is something I've thought about on occasion before quickly dismissing. I'm only 68kg, and I still estimate it would take me 14+ hours. Maybe some day in the future, but definitely not yet. Of course, I would do it outside; doing it virtually is a level of torture I have NO interest in. 🤣

I might train and attempt a v-everesting for next years strava/lecol 8848m challenge, it’s usually a free jersey if completed in one ride, you did well for not doing any specific training for it 👍 I will probably have to stick a 50-34 chainring and 34 or 36 cassette on the rear when I try it though and any time I climb I put the Trainer difficulty to 100%, like you I race with it at 50-60%

Putting food in your body when you are not hungry on a bike could lead to trouble. Shameless applications of chamois butter will eliminate the chaff. Great effort but I'm sure there's easier ways to ride 100kms!
The longer you ride the more critical your setup. Anything over 4-6 hours really shows if things aren't set up correctly. 3 main contact points - handlebars, seat and pedals all need to be right. Good padded shorts are a must too.
My longest ride IRL is 150 miles with 12,000ft of climbing, 2019 Coast to Coast in a day. It took me around 14hrs to complete but my backside was fine. My feet had hot sores for the final 3hrs. I plan to do Chase the Sun ride from Sheppy to Weston Super Mare, 205 miles in a day, if I can motivate myself.

Nice one! You’re really progressing. One point, you mentioned pants. If it wasn’t a term for cycling shorts, then fyi you don’t wear underwear under cycling shorts. You can then use chamois cream to help reduce chafing. Ride on👍

Unfortunately there’s not too much you can do to solve arse pain on a ride of this length, apart from getting fitter, the more power you can sustain the more weight you put through your legs, if your power drops you put less weight through your legs and more through your saddle

You should seek help from a professional trainer (or to a structured plan on trainingpeaks for example).
