- Let's take an In Depth look at Coal Mining with a Private Mine tour with the UGM (Underground Minders). The tour takes place at the Lansford #9 mine which holds the record for the longest continuously operated coal mine in the world. Part 1 starts off with an introduction from the UGM crew, who then take us into the mine with the lights off. Once inside we learn about different equipment that was used, methods of mining as well as the history about this particular mine.

So fascinating! The medics in a Kentucky mine saved my grandfather's life. When momma was 4 years old her dad, my grandfather lost 3 fingers from the coal cart rolling across them. Momma remembered it like it happened yesterday. I believe it was in 1932 when the accident happened. Momma had just lost her mother a few months prior. Momma said she heard the siren go off in the mine and she had a straight shot view to the mine opening. She said she knew immediately in her heart that it was her daddy. She got really scared and dropped to her little knees and started praying for God not to take her daddy too...when she saw the mantrip come out and her daddy laying on the front she new he was going to be ok. She said he couldn't walk due to loss of blood so the medic in the hole threw him on the front of that mantrip holding his wrapped hand above my grandfather's head because he was to weak to do it himself. The medics in the hole deserve a lot of praise for saving lives. Can't wait for part 2.
Awesome stuff. My grandfather was a mule boy back in 1900s to early 1910s, tough life for a kid. It's great that this history is saved like this, for people like myself and others who has family members that worked in the mines. Thanks Jay for sharing this.👍
Hard to imagine a kid having that type of life. The UGM guys do a great job at preserving coal mining history.
Having been in this mine on one of their regular tours, I am amazed at the long version. I thought our tour was fantastic...wow!!! This is so awesome! I can hear such well deserved pride in their voices as they discuss how they rescued this mine. It's like you are in their house, that they restored. I can feel the love, for sure! I agree. The regular tour is great, but this experience was fantastic.
lt is amazing to me that more miiners were not killed ...such a dangerous place to work . Never realized how complicated coal mining is . (especially antracite ) Just having a way to have light underground is mindblowing ....working with candlelight ...hard to imagine . Little ten year old boys working down there ..unbelieveable .What an "eye-opening " tour . Miners are an amazing group of people . Thank you for making us more aware of the dangers they faced ( and still face ) every day .. ...looking forward to Part two .
I learned more than I ever knew while taking this tour. The UGM are doing a fantastic job at preserving and educating everything there is to know about coal mining.

Great vid, best one ever. I’ve been working the mines for 30 years, very hard work, even with the modern equipment. J.P I’m surprised the tour operators did not require all the guests to wear Hard Hats and have safety lamps and Rebreathers in case of no fresh air? Glad nothing happened.

Fascinating JP! My grandfather was a coal miner. In a mine in the Johnstown area. He died of, as many did, of black lung.

I tell you this, I have an all new respect for Miners..Wow. Not a fan of the Mule treatment though.
I was told if you abused a mule you were 'black balled' from working in the mines, you buy mules, miners were hired. Cheaper to replace a miner than a mule!
@@coalcrackerchris Being kept down in a dark mine all its life never to see light if day is Abuse enough.
I feel sad for the mules, never seeing sunlight, breathing in all that dust and poisonous air. They didn't have a choice. So glad they don't abuse mules anymore. I wonder how their eye sight was, being in darkness all the time.
