The Lansford #9 mine actually holds the distinct record of being the longest continuously operated anthracite coal mine in the world, operating from 1855 - 1972 when it was put out of business from Hurricane Agnes. My grandpa worked that mine. I would visit that area as a kid and always felt like I was going back in time. I toured it once as a teenager but my curiosity and appreciation was not what it is now. Thank you for the video..hits home. 🙏

Enjoyed the tour so much ....lots of history there .Seeing the basket of RR spikes reminded me of the Thanksgiving day many years ago when my sisters and I decided to walk along the track near our house. They had recently done maintenance on the track and as we walked along .we picked up the old spikes that had been tossed aside and put them in our pockets .Our jeans became so loaded down we could hardly hold them up on our walk back home . . Daddy thought we were crazy to be so excited about a bunch of old rusty spikes. ...but to us they were treasures . Watching your videos is like a "treasure hunt " , Jay ...thank you for the fun.

My grandfather worked that mine. He lived up in Summit Hill. Ive been to that mine many times.
Pennsylvania, land of coal mines and steel! That was an interesting tour. Never been in a coal mine before only a gold mine. There are obvious similarities as they all follow the vein. Interesting when he was talking about how far the vein goes all the way to Harrisburg, where I was born. Great tour JP, thanks.

This was a excellent tour these mines are so interesting that's all I can say. One will never find this information in a history book.
So in a sense the entrance is an incline slope.

I would love to tour this mine. I was a coal mine section mechanic for a few years before hitting the gold field. I loved my time spent in the mines it was a whole different world underground and the guys you work with are your work family. You spend as much time or more with your fellow miners then you do at home. Thank you for the awesome footage.
Thank you for this video. It was done beautifully. I was born and raised in this coal region yet have never been on this tour. It’s now on my list to do. I must say I got emotional watching understanding what my great grandparents, uncles and many family members had to endure to put food on the table.
I appreciate you watching. Taking the tour in person is the best way to appreciate the hardship of those who risked their lives for a few cents a day.
This is one of the best videos you've done yet. I'm doing my best to make sure that people know about your channel. The rail yard video you did was also a great one (amongst many others), so please don't leave TH-cam. Christmas is always a busy time for everyone, so don't be discouraged. This is also the stuff that needs to be documented. Anthracite coal burns hotter and almost 50% cleaner. It's still a viable option when modern technologies are too expensive. Catalytic converters can destroy the toxins easier, and reburns the smoke, producing even more heat, reducing the amount needed to provide the equal amount of heat.
You can reuse almost anything if you really need to. We need to all have the same hope. It makes sense biologically.
Why don't they utilize that or a form of that tech to continue to use coal and save an industry that they say is mostly responsible for carbon emissions? If my question is a little vague I can elaborate.

I took a course in college Marking Art & Design and we made things like at 7:10 but they were mostly buildings.
I know how to use an old stove like that. The baby looks like it's in a bath tub of ice cubes. At 8:37- the one with the wringers is what we had to use Up State New York to do our washing in when I was eight. We had the old wooden phone hanging on the wall that you had to pick up the ear piece, wind the phone then talk into the mouth piece and speak to an operator. How things have changed.

My father his father and his siblings all were born in Lansford, both my grandfather's and some of there sons worked in the #9 and #8. My Great Grandfather was killed in the #8 in 1948
It is so amazing. We have basements and sometimes live there, but I'm mind boggled at how they almost build complete cities underground and all that massive equipment there. Your guide was very informative.
Its impressive what they were able to construct back in the 1800s.

The Pioneer Mine in Ashland is a neat tour because they have a small steam engine ride you can take and the mine tour has some really neat fossilized prehistoric trees. I also found Scott Crossfield’s signature on a wall. I’ve also taken the #9 tour and it is unique in its own way too. They said the escape shaft comes out above Boyer’s grocery store up on 209. Thanks for filming this.

that steam loco is a Saddle Tank design with the water tank on top of the boiler. Eliminates the need for a trailing tender
Back in the day my father was a coal miner. Never got to see the inside of it. Thank you JP it took 66 years to see one. Very interesting.

Pretty sure the lockers that were suspended from chains in the air served two purposes ,to keep Rats from getting into your stuff and to stop theft ! I delivered to foundries in Erie ,Pa in the 1980's and many locker rooms had open rooms with benches and chain lockers suspended in the air!
Went on the tour week before memorial day with my son was originally doing the Lackawanna tour but it was closed. Turned out to also be very good.
All 3 in the area are fantastic and offer something different.
Great video, very interesting. Thanks for posting. I used to visit the White Scar limestone caves in North West England, and at the original turn-around point, they used to kill the lights and what an atmosphere that was. It allowed us to experience how it must have been for the man who scraped though tiny holes from the original entrance. They had a figure laying on its belly,. All he had for light, was a couple of candles fixed to the front of the bowler hat. Thanks again. Jack UK.

Awesome footage. Horrible how young the kids were when they starting working in the mines. The elevator shaft was unreal.

Cooking on a woodburning stove sounds like fun ( and tricky ) ... .have never done that . We have a reproduction one..castiron in antique mold and wired for electricity. ....just love stuff from "the olde days " ..

I grew up just up the hill from here on Ridge st. My grandfather was a miner in this mine and possibly other ancestors. I know many of the people who helped clean and open the mine to the public.

I really loved the photograph you took of the steam train with the sunset behind it, awesome. You are 38 ???, I thought you were younger, I beat you on age as I turned 51 yesterday ;). Thank you coal miners of yester years and also today and their family's. They suffered much and also today to bring light and heat into homes that without their work those homes would have remained dark and cold.

At-39:51- Isn't that where they showed in a picture that a steel structure was, kind of looked like an oil rig and they said it was no longer there, but maybe the hole is still there and they have it blocked off for safty reasons and maybe to help keep the water out.

I don't know if you still can but, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago was built over a mine, and had tours. Haven't been in it since i was a kid, long time ago. lol Some of what you showed reminded me a lot of that tour.

I wouldn't recommend taking a baby, but it's definitely worth seeing.
2:11 Ranchleers and farmers use a similiar alignment of rails as a "cattle guard" because it eliminates the need of a gate to keep cattle in, their hooves can't negotiate the rails.
There was a Colorado rep or sen who thought the cattle guards could be retrained for other jobs.
That old steam engine looks very interesting
I can't even begin to imagine the life of a miner. I mean we all complain about our jobs and/or employers now but it's nothing compared to the hard and dangerous work the miners did. And it's disturbing to hear that children were put to work. I know it was a different time, but it's still hard to understand that adults thought it was okay to treat children like that. Same as with old mental asylums where people were treated horribly. I guess it takes centuries for common sense and compassion to keep evolving in humans.
You ain't kidding. It's unlike most professions out there. Although most mine is done on the surface now, there's still deep underground mining taking place. Im fascinated by how they did all this work with very little modern equipment.

I enjoy all your videos this one is one that really hit home though because im from KY and 5 of my brothers worked in the coal mines there for years . One of my brothers got hit in the head with a big piece of coal and he still has coal particles in his head that can be plainly be seen and one of my cousins was killed in a coal mine
