      That is a misconception, Frieren hid her strength even from the heroes until they faced the demon king so that the alertness of demons won't go up.
      Frieren has a habit of belittling herself and were she ranks, but also her deception.
      She wouldn't have wanted the demons to realise how powerful she truly is by outright beating somebody like Qual.

    Things to note in this episode:
    - Frieren is wearing Flamme's earrings.
    - Frieren's favourite spell is a spell that creates a field of flowers which was Flamme's favourite spell.
    - Flamme used magic without a staff

    The crazy part about this is that Aura won't live to tell the other demons how powerful Frieren truly is. So Frieren's mana remains a secret.

    • @Moskarth
      @Moskarth ปีที่แล้ว +405

      That’s why it’s like cheating and dishonorable because no demon will ever live when they come up across it and therefore can’t learn to anticipate it. It’s simple but beautiful

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +223

      Lügner can’t tell anyone either even though he was smart enough to actually figure it out, just a tad bit too late.

    • @dl8571
      @dl8571 ปีที่แล้ว +240

      That is why Flamme told her to suppress her mana her whole life and to live in obscurity, it's all a ploy to trick demons into lowering their guard. Notice how Lugner never saw Fern as a threat (even turning his back on her) until it was to late. Same thing happened with Aura. That's probably why Frieren never bothers to explain to people who she truly is, just in case word gets around to other demons.

    Another thing to note as said in episode 9 if you have a strong enough will you can overcome the scales, however Aura was so flat footed by the reveal that it shattered her will to fight, hence why she could do nothing when she "guillotined" herself with the sword because she was in too much disbelief.
    Another side note, if you look carefully, you can see Aura start to sweat on her cheeks just before the reveal.

      Just a slight "correction". A strong will doesn't allow you to overcome the scales, only resist a bit.
      That is why Aura told the people wjo were able to resist to kill themselves, since they still had enough will to perhaps try to attack her if given the chance, but not enough to resist that order.

      Aura was cautious when facing Frieren, carefully observing her and whittling down her mana to make sure that her spell worked without a doubt, not her fault for not seeing through a thousand year deception concocted by two of the most brilliant mages is history, as was intended.

      I adore this storytelling. Instead of trying to build tension around how Frieren could possibly defeat this overpowered opponent (Oh no she's going to die!)and then pulling some cheap twist with hidden powers, the storytellers made it quite clear that Frieren was going to win and also how. They instead hyped us up for the reveal of just HOW MUCH more mana she has - and damn if this wasn't epic and satisfying.

    Hiding mana seems to be the equivalent of a black belt going into a 1 on 1 karate match wearing a yellow belt
    All the work and effort to earn such a high rank, something to be proud of, being hidden away for a “cheap trick”
    Disrespecting yourself, your opponent, and everyone else who achieved that rank or above

      @@vhaelen326i think thats just in terms of demons preferences, they can go stealth mode for a while to ambush people but only for a time. There's a future moment where frieren completely hides her mana and it's shown to be somewhat hard I guess, will probably be covered in this season

      @@Despotic_WaffleWell like Aura said, it's pointless for them. You either have it on to assert dominance or off to completely hide yourself. Lowering it wouldn't achieve anything for demons

    • @vhaelen326
      @vhaelen326 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Despotic_Waffle i mean we have statements from aura saying she would be able to recognize if someone were to deminish their mana rather than hide it comepletely because it takes on a sort of unstable flickering property (she was just out of luck that frieren probably spent more time with her mana deminished then with it on full blast) but we saw even fern who is by all intents and purposes still a very young mage and she managed to supress her mana entirely, i mean i would imagine the hiding it completely is more physically taxing over long periods, if compared to muscles it would be difference between strength and endurance, hiding it comepletely for longer periods of time requires strength and deminishing it for long periods of times requires endurance, or it might be a case of the more mana you have the harder it is to hide it completely, or on the other side you might be right and its a case of either an unreliable narrator or a somewhat inconsistent worldbuilding, neither of which is a big deal imo

    I love this philosophy of demons. How their strength is so tied into their pride, the notion of constantly hiding it is utterly alien to them. The best equivalent I could think of is this: It would be as if an animal spent it’s entire life, pretending to be an undesirable mate, it’s just something they cannot comprehend; pretended to be…”lesser” for more than just a brief moment. Just shows that these demons truly are just beasts.

    i see why the demons hunted down the elves race. Feiren in a previous episode states she hasn’t seen another elf in over 400 years, and that girl likes to travel, she would have found some if they existed.

And any demon that comes across her got absolutely clapped anyway. No demon ever lived to tell the tale of "oh, this is how she beats us" or "this is what she did" and such. Then cutting to the point of 50 years into the apprenticeship, her suppressed mana looks a lot smoother, showing how she has improved. Then, looking at Frieren's reflection in Aura's eye, her mana is completely smooth. That's some insane detail
    Fern's mana when looked at by Lugner has smooth outline as well. She can do what took Frieren 50 years to do, but, i don't blame Frieren since she's suppressing an amount that's like 10x Fern's lol

    A good thing about Frieren is that mana=stamina, not power, so even though someone has a absurd amount of mana, it doens't mean they are stronger, just like Qual had less mana than Frieren, but was a stronger mage/fighter than her.
    This make the fights and power levels more balanced in this universe, if not, there would be no way a human could ever beat a demon, elf or other race that lives for hundred of years, so making mana be more like stamina than power, help's a lot.

    I like that this anime shows every fight in an unique way. What I'm saying is that it don't use the full of action and movements scene for the fights like JJK, instead it goes to show them in like an epic and even dare to say in a poetic way which, at least for me hits me more deeply.
