    Nice Jacob! One thing I noticed a couple years ago when using my Audio Technica USB Mic is that when the iOS device is fully charged the Mic would work but if the iOS power was less than 50% I got the incompatible error.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Jay Noggle Yeah I've noticed similar stuff too with external gear that isn't designed specifically to be connected with iDevices. I think I could be that iOS either limits or strangles power output completely when battery is below a certain level.

    Good advice. I have a whole drawer full of cables, adapters and dongles of various flavours. I have a purge occasionally but I swear they are breeding. My latest fun controller is a Novation Launchkey Mini ... I just plug it in and it works, no power needed and very well integrated with the Launchpad app ... Hassle free, no creative blocks, love it.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheVimFuego I also love the non-hassle types of setups. It's why I've got IKM stuff. Ships with lighting cables for connecting directly without a CCK. They're also very low on power consumption.

    Hahaha this is an old video but I actually tried this today!!! Bought a Focusrite Solo, tried to plug it into iPad Pro lightning version and NOPE! Power no good....I watched videos and videos and everyone said “get the Apple Camera Connection Kit”...I find one at 4.30 in the afternoon, race to the shop to get it...get home, have dinner, go and set it up and NOPE!!!!!! Power no good. Still.
    So the first one didn’t work for me. Now I’m searching for answers and here I am hahaha...an it looks like the final answer on this is a “no” (for me) hope it’s worked for others 👍
    You make great videos man! I’ve learned a lot from you over the years. Cheers!

    As most people have hinted previously, the simplest workaround is to use a USB hub, even if its not powered. That seems to get the ipad to recognise the MIDI device without any issues. Some apps like digital synths will require that you go into the settings to enable your MIDI controller as an input device.

    I just bought the USB-A adapter to use my Fender Mustang Micro interface. I just got the message today saying “too much power…”
    Does this mean I have to charge the USB-A? If so, how can I do that?

  • @IMaiden89
    @IMaiden89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    An unpowered USB hub also works as I believe it overrides apples power output limitation

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +IMaiden89 You are correct! It works for me to when I use up to two devices. When adding third one, things starts to go wrong though.
      I made a live stream today in where I am extensively testing different "dongle configurations" including USB hub powered/in-powered, CCK, USB3 to Lightning and different chargers.
      I got some very interesting results! The video is being processed by TH-cam right now, but as soon as it's done it will be available on my channel. ;)

    Tomorrow I'm buying the Arturia Minilab MkII mainly to be used on the iPad and I was shocked at the Price of the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter, a whopping 40€, and this video made it clear that you really want to use the Apple gear, as apple gear itself can already cause issues, Im sure that if I use some cheaper variant I will just get into more issues.
    So tomorrow I'm going to spend 139€ for the Minilab and the adapter.
    One thing I always question myself is why Apple doesn't call it a powered "OTG" lightning adapter, but I guess OTG is trademarked.

  • @ajhproductions2347
    @ajhproductions2347 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I noticed I have this problem especially with my Focusrite if my iPad IS fully charged. That's when I'll get that "device requires too much power" thing. And I always use the adapter thing with a charger plugged into it. Any idea why that might be?

      Thank you! Unfortunately I do not now I the Behringer umc22 will work with iPad or iPhone. This interface is unknown to me and I haven't come across anyone else within the mobile musicians community that uses it. Sorry I can't be more of help. I suggest that you ask around on the Audio Bus forum and/or in the iPad musician group on Facebook. These are the biggest forums for mobile musicians.

    I've had that problem with an icon USB midi controller. It worked fine with iOS 9 but is useless under iOS 10. I could understand if Apple produced their own midi devices for use with iPads and wanted to protect their business, but it's annoying and expensive when peripherals become obsolete within a few weeks.

    To bypass this w/out charger you should get usb 3.0 hub as Apple cable with check power usage on first connection but not second. I did this with my DragonFly Black: Apple cable -> usb 3.0 hub -> DragonFly and it works well

    Nice video! Any idea if i can connect a mixer to the iPhone 8 with this adapter a go on facebook live?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically it should work yes, as long as the USB mixer you want to use is "class compliant". Meaning no drivers are needed. The reason I can say for sure is because I've never tested connecting anything to an iPhone 8 and so I cannot confirm anything.

    This is a huge problem for the iPad Air 3, i haev tried powered usb hubs with the usb3 adapter with not much luck, I would stop getting the power requirement error but the device was intermittent in functionality, I tried connecting 3 different usb mics, they would be recognized and then disconnect, tried usb camera and same result, I think maybe the lightning adapters do not work as well as the newer iPad devices with USB-C.

      Aw, that sounds like you e got a USB-ground loop issue or something along those lines. I have not yet found a really good way of solving it. I’ve been wanting to do a video about it but I can’t until I know exactly what to tell my audience. At least now you now what to ask about. Try asking around audio based forums and describe it just like you did here and say that you think it’s a USB ground loop issue.

    Hello I’ve to connect the apogee Duet to usb to lightening 3 adapter with my iPad Air 2,but it’s not working.......please help me out🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I don’t have access to an Apogee Duet so I can’t test it myself but it should be compatible with iPad Air. Make sure the connection order is done properly. Make sure the Duet has the wall-power supply plugged in first. Then connect the Duet USB cable and Apple charger cable to the USB3 to lightning cable. When all that is hooked up, try connecting it to the iPad. If you get errors then unplug the lighting connector and reboot the iPad.
      .
      When the iPad has rebooted try connecting the lighting connector again. This should work. However if it doesn’t then here are some known issues:
      .
      Third party connectors USB3 to lighting and CCK’s need to be MFi certified (this is why I use Apples original products). Same with the lighting charger cables and Apple charger. If you own third party connectors or lighting connectors then those might be causing the connection errors if they aren’t MFi certified.
      .
      It’s very likely that these are causing the errors. If your using original stuff then another known error is iOS itself. Whenever a big new update rolls out (iOS10, 11 now 12 ...) stuff usually breaks. Apps stop working and connectors too.
      .
      In this case there ain’t much o e can do except wait for Apple to get their shit together and start rolling out bug fixes. This is why I always wait at least 6 months before even considering updating to a new iOS. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
      .
      I would really appreciate it if you come back here and comment about your testing. It’s not only helpful to me but to others reading the comment section too. 👍🏼

    For me it does this even when my iPad is at 100%... and I don’t have one of those bigger camera chords or the USB port so really I’m stuck. Those camera chords are quite hard to find in New Zealand, at least for me. Does anyone have any advice about how I could fix this without buying a USB port or a bigger camera chord?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to help but you need to provide more information. What are you trying to connect? Midi controller, sound Card? What's the brand and model? What model iPad are you using and what iOS version is it running? Also, are you using an original Apple Camera Connection Kit or an unofficial third party brand connector?

      Jakob Haq Hi, sorry about that, I’m trying to connect a microphone by behringer and it says c-3 on it. The USB connector (sorry I’m not too advanced with technology) that I’m using to try and plug my mic into my iPad is by MobilePre, more commonly known as M - audio. My iPad is an iPad Air 2 pro and I’m running on iOS 11. I’m pretty sure the camera chord is an official one, I don’t know how to check haha
      Also, I have no trouble connecting my MIDI keyboard into my iPad using the camera chord. Just thought that might help.

      When you purchased the USB hub a cable should have came bundled up with it. That cable usually has a mini USB connector at one end that goes into the hub. And he other end has a regular USB make connector that goes into the Lightning connector.
