  • Students use an interesting method to measure the specific latent heat of fusion of water. This is a classic physics key practical which uses the principal of conservation of energy to measure the energy used to melt water.

This was a better lesson in 7 minutes than my teacher gave in an hour LOL

Really helpful video as I was struggling to understand this practical.
My teacher hates this practical 😂 he thinks it is the most inaccurate way to find the latent heat of a phase change.

Totally agree. 22% is pretty rubbish. I can think it's a really cool idea for a bit of energy analysis though! Its always better to have some way of getting a graph. So crushed ice around a heater and continuously measure the mass vs energy supplied should do better than this!

Hi. Thanks for the video - nice idea for the experiment, clearly set out and presented.

Thanks buddy! Glad you like it, I can't take credit for the method, but it is really cool. :-)

increasing the temp of the water above room temp so that less energy leaked to the surroundings? Isn't it so that less energy gained from the surroundings? at 6:40

"The temperature of the ice beforehand we will know is zero because an ice in water mixture is always at zero degrees." Nonsense.

in a water mixture when ice is melting there is no transfer of kinetic energy therefore the temperature of the ice does stay the same.
