- Unknowingly I got too close to the nest of a titan triggerfish, Balistoides viridescens, and it made the fish really angry. These are big fish with powerful teeth, so I'm glad I managed to escape without any injuries! Dauin, Negros Island, Philippines, filmed with an Olympus TG4.

That fish released its inner shark, only problem was size. His heart was there, I rate the attack a 6/10

For those who don’t know triggerfish have a bite strong enough to easily disassemble lobsters. So it’s like trying to swim away from a fish sized hole puncher, so it’s way more scary than it seems.

Yea I've seen these around while diving. One of the few things in the ocean that worry me. Kicking away with fins out and going horizontal instead of vertical as the diver did here is the way to go. Triggerfish view their territory as a cone so the cone is narrowest at the bottom near their home and as you go up higher in the water the cone expands out further.
Exactly! there is also a longer explainer video on my channel detailing that, please check it out. The odd thing with this fish was that it kept going after me even though I swam away horizontally.

That’s funny because I had the same thing happen to me snorkeling off the Island Moorea .
That little sucker got me with some hard nips to my legs that surprised me at first .
Then it kept coming at me and I had to fend it off for about 10 yards, and then it went back to where it all started. After talking to a local , it turns out the trigger fish can be very territorial.

I remember going diving in Thailand and they warned us to swim sideways, not up from trigger fish since they basically treated their territory as a cone going up from the floor, so swimming up, or even up and sideways wasn't going to help at all.
True, but in my case here even swimming sideways only calmed the fish down after quite some time.

Triggerfish can do some real damage to a human because of their teeth. The reason for the attack was the diver swam through its territory. It was protecting its eggs. He did do the right thing, though. Swimming horizontally takes you out of its territory while swimming upward will only result in the Triggerfish attacking you even more fiercely since its territory goes vertically from the bottom to the surface.
Also, their skin is SUPER tough. Like, when you catch some, and you're cleaning them, you try cutting through it with a knife and you stand there with your jaw on the floor in amazement at how unbelievably hard it is to try to cut through it. Like rawhide leather mixed with Kevlar.

This brings back memories of Koh Tao in 2006. The pistol hand sign pops up in my memory as well as the "swim away with your fins towards the trigger fish" advice from my diving instructor, Van Duffel, who had a big trigger fish related scar on his forehead :) Ahhhh these were the times...

Exactly what happened to me about 40 years ago in the Red Sea. I was setting up to photograph the male over the nest and he turned and charged just as I clicked the shutter. He never actually made contact, but chased me about 20 yards down the reef. My dive partner found it hilarious.
We are lucky that these fish don't grow to 2 meters, diving would be impossible.

I just realized how big a fear I have of being attacked by literally anything underwater.
This is really rare. Usually it's great to scuba dive. Try it for sure!

And no, they don’t eat humans and they only attack as a defensive tactic to keep predators away from their nests. We had the same experience there, there were three of us hiding behind our guide as he was fending off the Trigger with his wand, when we looked back at the video the fish was only about six inches big lol

This type of fish has given friends of mine cuts which needed stiches. Really!
We have this less than 100 mm long cave fish called a "Bug-eyed Big-eye" which feeds during the night at the waters edge, especially around the mouths of estuaries. During the day, you can find schools often as many as 30 strong, hanging near the ceiling in caves, about 20 feet below low water.
NORMALLY they are chill, and when you go poke your head in the cave looking for crayfish, they just dance around a bit, don't even seem frightened of you.
But one time, skin-diving with just a mask and flippers, I put my head into a cave about as big as an airline toilet, reached out for a crayfish, and what seemed to be ALL the Bug-eye Big-eyes in the world just bit my face, arm, ears, and lips, all at once.
It gave me such a fright, I was lucky to make it back to the surface because I cracked my head on the rock backing out of the cave. I had about a dozen little bleeding bite marks on my face, they meant business !. And it was the same thing, they lay their eggs communally, and all protect them.
Where is this? Do you know the scientific name of that fish?
It was Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, where I did most of my diving/fishing/living as a young man. Whangaparapara, to be exact.
I think it is Pempheris adspersa but the picture of it I can find is both a different colour, and a slightly different shape.
Which of course might mean nothing more than my memory being faulty.
I saw them at depth in caves with a torch, or at night with a torch for just a few seconds at the shoreline, where they were of course feeding under the surface.
That is how I first got to learn their name, I had seen them while diving, probably everyone does. But you see so many different fish. We had been fishing, came back on a still night, were putting the boat away and I turned the torch on the out-flow of a creek as it spilled out of a culvert, and the pool was full of them.
I said "What is this one?" and my nephew, who is now a Dr of Biology and works for a Marine Institute took one look and reeled off all sorts of information. @@pacificklaus8189
